I. The Basics The battle system may seem daunting at first, but it's actually rather simple! Remember, if you have any trouble or are unsure about the system, you are always free to ask staff for help during battles! If you are battling a fellow member, you are free to develop your own system! But remember, that system can only be used in that thread and if everyone invovled agrees on it. Do you learn by example? Check out this thread, Professor Yew versus a Wild Pikachu! The Pokémon Remember that Deprin only sports a three-pokémon team. This means you can only have three active pokémon on you at any time. You cannot switch the active pokémon on your team in any thread, even if you capture a new pokémon (unless you had a free slot anyway). The "OOC" Section In your battle posts, you should have an "OOC" section where you state clearly and explicitly what you are doing. While we love for all actions a pokémon does to be detailed and written out in the post, the OOC section makes it easy for staff or the person handling the math in rolled-battles to calculate everything. An "OOC" section is not optional. Abilities Just like moves, a pokémon's ability will be taken into account. If you need a refresher on what an ability does, you can check out the ability database. Some abilities may not make sense given Rapture's systems. If you are not sure how an ability will work, please contact staff. You can also check section VI. Abilities. Here are some examples: Compound Eyes: They get +2 to each accuracy DC check (example: a DC for a move with an accuracy of 55 is now 13 instead of 11). Early Bird: When asleep, flip two coins/roll two two-sided dice. If either is heads or 1, it wakes up. Super Luck: Moves crit on a roll of 1 or 2 Whiting-Out and Danger Ratings If you white-out in a thread (all your pokémon faint), the thread ends and, if it was paid like an encounter, you will not be refunded. It is your choice how your character escapes the wilds. Each area also has a danger rating. This is mostly for roleplay flavor as nothing will happen to your character without explicit permission, but if you wanted staff to add an element of true danger to your thread, please notify them. The danger will be proportionate to an area's danger. For example, it is rare for anyone to have any serious injuries when exploring the routes, but many injuries occur on Mt. Veerie as it is further away from civilization and prone to dangerous storms. An area's danger rating is listed in it's area information. II. Rolled Battles Overview Rolled battles are the primary way things are done on site. All league and story-based battles are determined by rolled battles. These battles utilize your pokémon's stats and your character's skills as a trainer to determine success. It may seem complicated, but it is actually very simple! It just takes practice. Turn Order and Actions Currently, only single pokémon battles are allowed on site. Once the battling pokémon are sent out, turn-order is based on a pokémon's speed. The one with the highest speed goes first. If their speed is tied, discuss with your roleplay partner who goes. In the case of moderated threads, staff will allow the trainer to go first. Battles exist on a turn by turn basis. This means that pokémon will always take turns attacking. One pokémon goes, then the other. During battle, you can choose the following actions:
Attacking and Damage During battles, moves should be described to add flavor to the fight. Posts that state a pokémon only uses a move with no descriptors are not allowed. There are a few steps to follow when attacking and calculating the resulting damage:
1. Accuracy Accuracy can be determined by taking the accuracy located in the move list and diving it by 5. For example, Low Kick has an accuracy of 100. Divide 100 by 5 to get 20. The accuracy of this move is 20. 2. Hit or Miss and Status or Condition Changing You will roll a d20 to determine if the move hits or misses. If your result is less than or equal to the move's calculated accuracy, it hits. Example: You attack with Low Kick and you roll a 17, which is less than 20. The move therefore hits and damage can be calculated (and in this case, extra damage calculated due to the move having a list of pokémon it causes more damage to). Important Note:
This is different compared to how most systems work, but it balances everything out with the math we use for our combat system. Next, determine if your move causes any special effects. This includes causing condition changes or causing a stat changes. Stat Altering Moves
Condition Causing Moves All condition moves have a chance listed in the move description (example, has a 30% chance of poisoning a target). This must be decided via a d20 roll in the same way accuracy is decided. In the case of poison sting, 30 divided by 5 is 6. You will roll a d20, and if you roll 1-6 the target is poisoned. Remember, 1 is an automatic hit in this case and 20 is always an automatic miss. For further information on status conditions, please see the Status Conditions section. 3. Calculate Damage Finally, it is time to calculate damage (if the move you used causes damage or if your pokémon is confused and hurts themselves). Damage Formula: Adjusted Power = (power * Attack) / (Defense * 2) Damage = (adjusted power / 100) * max HP
Once you calculate the damage, it is time to factor in move effectiveness. This Type Chart can help. Then, alter the damage based on the following:
Finally, subtract the damage from the defending pokémon's HP. Status Conditions There are specified rules to follow should your pokémon become afflicted with a status condition. Regardless of the condition, you will flip a coin/roll a two-sided dice to determine what happens at the end of your affected pokémon's turn. On a heads or a 1, the condition will end at the end of the turn. On a trails or a 2, the condition will continue to persist. Please click the spoiler to see conditions in further detail (unless stated otherwise, all conditions will persist outside of battle): Sleep
Paralysis
Confusion
Burn
Poisoned
Frozen
III. Freestyle Battles Non-official battles, such as self-moderated battles or battles that are not with a member of the League or for a Certificate, can be done freestyle. This means there are no rolls and no staff involvement. The winner is usually decided among the participants before the battle begins. Or, if those involved wished to, they could develop their own unique battle rules to use during that thread only. These battles count towards any player-battle requirements. IV. Helpful Links Random.org - the dice on site are mostly used for self-moderated threads. You are free to use this site for your rolls if you lack physical dice or don't want to use the site's dice.
