The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Clear w/ Clouds || Evening || If Battle: PR's mechanics || Route 6 Characters: Mya "Rainbow" Saller , Arris Yule Current Team: Eon || Bagon || Male || Level 5 || Tracker
It had been quite a day of, well, nothing much. If anything, it was a day figuring out where to go and finding a good path to take there. Not that Mya had money for a bus anyway, but walking was just as good. Eon walked beside her, enjoying the nice light and lovely day towards Summerhill. Mya considered going to that swamp but.... well, Summerhill was a good place to stop and rest up before making any choices. Plenty of time to camp and hike and take in fresh air. It was strange now, though. The world had been so empty for so long. Now it felt so much stranger with the sound of Pokemon in the distance. It was evening. Still moderately light out. But they would have to set up camp soon. Mya knew how to camp with very little. In her backpack, she had a small tent her parents had provided her. There was even a rolled up sleeping blanket on the top of the bag, secured properly. Some food... a portable stove... Not too much, but just enough. Besides, Mya knew how to go a few days without food. Eon, however, would need more than her. He would have most of the food and water today. When they reached the next town, she would stock up with what little she had on her. "I'm thinking algae for dinner?" she said, giving Eon a look. He looked back up at her. "Hm. Yeah, maybe some mushrooms with it."

Arris checked his bag one more time, before leaving the Mistveil City limits. Just to make sure. Everything in order, all his items, enough food and filled water bottles... Belle was giving him a mildly sour face from where she was hopping along by his feet, as if telling him, 'Get a move on, now!'
"Sorry, sorry!" He apologized, and scooped the Bounsweet up onto his shoulder. "I just want to make sure we're prepared, y'know?"
"Swee..." she grumbled quietly - but a head scratch later, and all was forgiven.
Route 6 was rather lovely throughout the afternoon as the duo walked - but now that it was evening, it was coming time to maybe start thinking about setting up camp. The little pokemon was nestled in a spot in his bag, her leaves poking out the top, fast asleep. She'd worn herself out hopping all around him throughout the day and having a good time. He was sure she'd perk up once it came time for a little snack though - and with his bag open, she'd been recharging in the sunlight!
"...Hm. Recharging. You certainly aren't an electric type, are you? Like a little solar panel." He chuckled and ran a hand over her leaves gently. His very own pokemon... it was still hard to believe. Still - they didn't have too much left towards Summerhill, though it wasn't - wait a minute.
Arris squinted out at the horizon - was that... it was! Another person! And a pokemon... another trainer! Oh, man. His first trainer encounter... other than the Professor, of course. That was really exciting. He picked up his pace a bit, in a bid to maybe catch up. "Hey!" he called out, putting on a bright grin and a friendly wave, "Good evening!"

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me She naturally prickled at the new voice. Perhaps she wasn't quite used to people talking to her yet. That wasn't something you really did in Famine, walking up to strangers and talking to them. If you did, it would mean suspicion. But Mya had to get over that. Not everything was like back home. But, as Mya had learned, not everyone meant to start a fight and not everyone was an asshole. So, taking a deep breath, she decided to be as welcoming as she could to someone she didn't even know, but as always, being prepared for anything.
Her head turned towards him and his bright smile. There was no smile on her face to match, but she gave a polite nod. "Evening." Mya's eyes traveled to his bag and the.... leaves? Her brow furrowed. "Are you carrying a plant in your bag?"Eon was far more welcoming to the stranger. Once the man approached, Eon gave a happy cry and a wave with his little arm, smiling up at the tall stranger with a wide, sharp-toothed grin. A small, blue dragon that was far more welcoming that his trainer on the outside... shouldn't pokemon and trainers match each other in personality?

The tall trainer slowed to a stop as he approached, and bowed mildly in respect - and it was the bowing that brought to his eyes the wave the little blue dragon pokemon was bestowing upon him - and what a precious grin! He bowed to him as well, waving back, smile widening. "Heya lil' guy, good evening to you too!"
Arris paused at the other trainer's question, his smile replaced with a confused look, and glanced down to his bag, and the top of Belle spilling out of it. Oh, he could see how that... yeah. "Uhh - well I mean. Yes and no?" He pulled the bag around to his front, and gently reached in to scoop the berry pokemon into his arms. "She's my partner pokemon, so no - but she is a grass type, so... sort of yes?" He laughed quietly and smiled down at the little pokemon. "She tuckered herself out earlier, so I was letting her take a nap and left the bag open so she could photosynthesize." And because he couldn't bear to put her in her pokeball still and not see her at all times... but he didn't feel like admitting that. That would be too mushy, especially to a stranger. And Arris... didn't do mushy anyway.
"So we're both trainers then!" Arris perked up. "That's kind of exciting. Have you had your partner long?"
He paused for a moment, looking a little lost in thought. "Oh! Jeez," he finally said, shifting the Bounsweet to one arm to smack himself in the forehead. "Wow, how rude of me, sorry - I'm usually better than this. Hi! I'm Arris, and this is Belle."

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me The politeness took her back a little. She heard bowing was customary among some places, but she never witnessed it before. Oh well, she wasn't about to point it out. She was silent as he explained himself, listening intently and looking at the bag. A pokemon, huh? When he pulled out the bounsweet, Mya gave a soft, "Oh, how cute." She took out her phone and aimed it at the thing, turning on the pokedex app. "A bounsweet? Interesting." She looked back at the stranger, appraising him.... he didn't look like a threat. She could take him in a fight for sure.
"I'm Mya, but you can call me Rainbow. Whatever suits you," she responded. Mya's gaze went down to Eon. The bagon was smiling at the strangers, currently hopping from foot to foot trying to get the new pokemon's attention. "This is Eon, my bagon." Mya jutted with her head back towards the trail. "You can walk with us. I was just about to start looking for a suitable camp to make dinner."
She started walking away, not checking if Eon or the stranger followed. Eon soon glanced after her and gave Arris a 'follow us!' gesture before running after his trainer. Mya took in a breath of the fresh air, glancing over her shoulder just briefly to see if Arris was following. If he was, she says, "Eon and I have been travelling together for a few days now. What about you? How long have you had Belle?"

"Isn't she though?" Arris pulled Belle up to give her a lil smooch on the head. The little Bounsweet mumbled in her sleep, before her eyes popped open. "Sweeeee...?" she squeaked sleepily. Arris grinned at her.
"And Rainbow, huh? I like it. Nice to meet you too, Eon! Camp sounds good." He looked up at the sky, gauging the clouds. Eh. Didn't look too bad. By the time he looked back, Mya was already walking away. He blinked, and broke into a brisk trot to catch up. By this point, Belle had noticed the other trainer and pokemon's existence, and she squirmed out of Arris' arms with an excited "Boun boun!!" The moment she was on the ground, she was already bouncing around Eon as they walked in that overly friendly way small children do.
"Hahhh ahahah you're already ahead of me then! Belle and I met just this morning, to be honest." He rubbed the back of his neck and grinned. "We spent the day walking around acclimating to one another - or... I suppose more on my end - we've spent our whole lives without pokemon. These lil' guys don't know the difference without us, though, so I guess it's probably not as big a deal to them..."

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Eon was delighted that the other pokemon seemed eager to meet! He gave a happy call, waving his little arms around, and bouncing himself, although not nearly with the same grace as Belle. He clapped his little paws together at times, seemingly overjoyed. Mya watched them with a small smile before taking in a breath to let it out in a sigh. It was nice to have some actual wildlife in the world... and some wildlife they could befriend.
"Just this morning, huh? Well, I can say it doesn't take too long to bond to them." Mya thought back to when she met Eon... he decided to travel with her compared to the other way around. She wondered if he even knew what happened while he was in that pokeball. Maybe not. "Yeah, it's interesting how they are everywhere now. Hard to believe this is just how life.... was." She glanced back to Eon and Belle. "I wonder where they all went and why they decided to come back now, of all times. Not that I'm complaining."
She turned her attention back to the path ahead of them. "So, Arris... any destination in mind? Any current plans? Or are you just wandering around?" Some of Mya's questions may seem personal but they were rather normal for caravans to ask. How are you, where you from, where you going, the whole ordeal was just considered polite in her eyes.

Belle seemed even more pleased than she was before to have made a new friend. A particular bounce saw her trip - and instead, she simply used her rotund little body to roll around before popping up again with a happy cry! Arris' smile was soft, now - it was so nice to see more pokemon - and for Belle to make a friend. 'I'm gonna have to find more pokemon soon, perhaps...' he thought.
"Mmm... no, not at all - it's impossible not to love them." Arris already knew he'd do some pretty out-there things if it meant protecting the little Bounsweet - so he agreed with that sentiment entirely. "Isn't it, though? I can't imagine this every day - I grew up with stories of trainers, but I never imagined we'd actually live it. It really does make you wonder where they went... the stories I was told were always 'we loved our pokemon no matter what!'" His voice changed near the end of his sentence, as if mimicking whomever had told him this - it was a tone not unlike that of a 'crabby old grandpa' impression. He laughed, after, and shook his head.
Arris hummed in response to Mya's question, and glanced up at the sky as they walked. He stayed silent for a bit after that. It wasn't intended as rude - he was just thinking of what his answer really was. Much like his encounter with the professor that morning, he found he wasn't prepared for the question like he thought he'd be. One would think he'd know, growing up in a town of old people who you had to be prepared to answer every last question for... but, well. "I was... thinking of going back to my hometown, for a bit," he said finally. "Introduce Belle to my grandparents - Granny'd love to meet her, I think. From there... I guess I ought to check the bulletins for poke-jobs, but I was thinking maybe swing by Lotad Lake to do some fishing. Lots of different pokemon for Belle to meet - maybe a new teammate too!"
He grinned at the thought. 'Maybe a little picnic, the bay's not too far from the lake... and then maybe Broadmarsh, hmm... maybe... maybe I could catch a pokemon to bring back to my grandparents. I wonder if they'd like that...' "What about you?" He tilted his head towards Mya, eyebrows raising in interest. "Headin' anywhere special? What's your plans?"

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Mya tried to remember stories of pokemon she was told but... nothing really came to mind. As soon as pokemon vanished, nearly everyone in her town suffered for it. And their children suffered for it, and then she suffered for it. Stories of pokemon didn't really get around too often when you were more focused on scrounging enough money to put mushrooms on the table. But she did overhear some stories when she was younger while they traveled around. But nothing too fond. Maybe that was why she was so clueless about pokemon and everything surrounding them. They did get their ass kicked by a shinx, after all.
She did let out a chuckle at his mimicry. Sounded like an old lady. "That sounds like a good plan. I was thinking about heading to the swamp, seeing what I could find there." She sighed as she looked down at Eon. He was having the time of his life right now. "It'd help to have another pokemon on the team." She hummed when it was her turn. "I'm just... wandering around. Exploring, trying to figure out what my goals are. I'll be honest, I don't know anything about pokemon or what to even do with them. All I know is that I have one now." She glanced back at Eon. "I don't know what he would want either."
Eon was elated at having a new friend. When Belle rolled around, he gave a happy cheer and jumped up and down himself, spinning around in glee. He wasn't much of a fighter that Mya saw. He had attitude, that was for sure, but his attitude seemed to be reserved. He was so young and had a lot to learn, just like her. Oh well, time would teach them what they needed to know.

Arris raised his eyebrows at the mention of the swamp. It had been one of his favorite places to go camping as a teenager - even if the conditions in a swamp weren't... the best, for camping. Dealing with the wetness was part of the fun, in his opinion. Also, kayaking. "You're gonna find some real neat critters out there. Swamps being the way they are, I bet there's plenty of water, grass, poison..." he paused, and pulled his phone out of his pocket to look up the geographical information on swamps. "Ground, maybe? Wetlands, the ground is boggy, mud... Hmm... maybe not." He shrugged.
He grinned good-naturedly at Mya when she looked back to Eon. "That's part of the fun, I suppose, right? Or the challenge, in a good way. None of us know anything about what to do with em - save for the folks in Mistveil, I guess. And the folks who did know are all ancient and dying out, or in history books we can't use because the world changed so much since they left." He gestured broadly to the two playing youngsters and chuckled. "And if I had to guess, they're probably in the same boat. We're all in this same wacky, crazy adventure together. Which is nice." His voice lowered a bit. "It's nice not being alone in all of it."
He cleared his throat, shook his head, and turned his gaze to watch Belle and Eon playing. It made him happy to see the two become such quick friends - if only humans were capable of doing the same so easily, without judgement... alas, that was the nature of humanity, he guessed. Or at least, the nature of most people he'd known, over the years. People like Mya and Professor Yew were refreshing - maybe those who became trainers were different. "I know they can't speak," Arris tilted his head thoughtfully, "But... have you asked him what he'd want?" He hadn't thought to ask the same of Belle. Maybe he should.

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me She listened, giving hums of acknowledgement to his words. He wasn't wrong by any means. The swamp probably was filled with interesting critters now. "You seem to know a lot about pokemon," she said. "You should join me when I set up camp and teach me what you know." The fact was, without many people in her life that really knew pokemon, and with no real reason to talk to anyone about something that didn't even exist for eighty years, Mya was a fish out of water. Anyone that seemed to know anything was a valuable resource.
"You're right," she said after a few moments of contemplation. "It is nice not being alone." She never quite considered it before but, Eon was her first actual friend. Always traveling was hard and some of the folks in Famine were not the best. Kids would move in then move out, a lot of them running away or leaving to live with relatives. She could count on one hand the number of kids she remembered seeing when she was growing up.
Ask him? Nah, she hadn't done that yet. But... Mya came to a stop. "Eon." The bagon stopped playing with Belle and looked up at her. "What do you want to do?" The question was simple. Eon stared at her for a while before giving a big smile and patting his belly. Mya looked back to Arris. "Seems he wants to eat. Care to set up camp with us?"
She moved away, finding a nice spot off the trail with some tree cover. Mya dropped her bag before sitting right next to it, opening it up and rummaging around for her portable stove and the supplies she brought. "I have mushrooms and algae. That's it." Flavorings were expensive. She did have some salt though, that was something.

Arris grinned at the offer of camping. It wasn't that he was hoping for the invitation... but making a friend? Someone who was also in the exact same boat as he was, in this whole new world with a brand new attitude? He'd definitely hoped to talk longer. 'Hell yeah.'
He nodded sharply at the invitation, and came to a stop when Mya did. Belle too stopped and looked up to Mya, her mouth a little round 'o'. When Eon gave the ultimatum of 'dinner-time' Belle was immediately back to full energy, bouncing about and squealing in agreement. Arris couldn't help but laugh. "I suppose it is about that time! I'd love to take you up on that, yeah! I can't promise I know a lot, mostly just really old stories... but I'm happy to share regardless."
As Mya started setting up the portable stove, Arris dropped his bag too, and puttered around the tree cover for a few moments to pick up some stray sticks and kindling to get a fire going for supper. Belle was content to not help - but rather to flutter around Mya before finally settling down next to Arris' bag a few feet away. "I've mostly got algae," he agreed, "But... I do have a special little treat for Belle that we're happy to share. I wasn't sure what pokemon the professor would offer me, and didn't know about special dietary restrictions, or what they might eat, so I ah... wanted to be prepared, just in case they couldn't eat what we do. It was worth it. Can you get it out and hand it to Mya, sweetie?"
Belle was rocking side to side with a content noise at the mention of sharing, but when the command came out she popped up and dove face first into Arris' bag. "Sweee-ee-eeeee..." came the muffled noise of the little pokemon as she dug around, tiny feet kicking in the air. "Boun!" A moment later, she popped back out - the baggy of Pecha slices (a little more than half gone at this point - Belle had a sweet tooth as bad as Arris, and he'd learned he couldn't say no to her lillipup-face) in her mouth. She hopped over to Mya and held them up proudly. "Bouuuuuuun!"
Arris returned to sit across from Mya, eyes focused on setting the kindling up for a little fire before rummaging around in his bag for supplies as well. "They are... very sweet though, a heads up to you and Eon. I think it's because they're dried, or something?"

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Mya started cooking some mushrooms on the portable stove while Arris gathered up stuff for a campfire. Thankfully, mushrooms had enough natural moisture to not really need any lubricant for cooking. Mya didn't have any oil anyway, just water. She did toss in some algae to absorb that mushroom flavor as the mushrooms released their juices. Mya was... not the best chef, but she knew how to work with what she had and to make something edible and not too horrible to eat.
When the bounsweet started digging through Arris' bag though, Mya watched curiously. What could he have gotten for her? Mya was ashamed to say that she didn't have anything special for Eon yet. Money was tight enough, she couldn't afford some of that outrageously priced pokemon food pellets. When the pokemon bounced back over to her, she took the bag carefully and studied it.
Wait.
"Did you say pecha slices?" she asked, wanting to make sure she heard right. She looked back at them. "These things cost a fortune. Are you... sure Eon and I can have some?" This guy must be rich... but he didn't act like it. Mya could respect that. It was one thing to have money but not flaunt it, but he said he got these for Belle. That was respectable. She eyed Arris carefully... yeah, he didn't have that pompous attitude. He would get a pass, for now.
She carefully took one slice out before resealing the bag, tearing the slide in half. She handed one half to Eon. He chomped down in it, his eyes lighting up as he gave a happy cry. Mya gave a small smile. "Don't get too used to it, we can't afford these," she said very softly to him, using the cuff of her jacket to wipe some saliva dribbling from his mouth. She then took a bit of her own piece. "Oh, wow, fuck, that's delicious." Man, she hoped berries weren't as expensive in the future...

"Aren't they though?" Arris pulled out some of his own algae to add to the cooking, not wanting to split entirely from the other trainer's supplies when he could fairly contribute, too. From there, he continued to work on the fire, fanning it gently and adding smaller twigs to make sure the flame stayed a usable size and didn't go out. "Though - I wouldn't offer if it wasn't okay, y'know? It's crazy how different they taste from the fake sweeteners or flavors and stuff - and those are expensive as is too. I hope we start seeing wild patches pop up. I'm curious to taste every new thing we see."
Belle bounced happily and waved her arms with a happy squeal, seeing Mya and Eon liked the berries. Favorite favorite berry! She was glad they liked them too! Arris reached over with his free hand and stroked her leaves gently. "I'm glad she has a sweet tooth, at least - I've heard other berries have incredibly different, unique flavors, and I'm sure like us, pokemon have their own developed tastes..." He hummed. "But Belle's happy, and that's all that matters."
When he was satisfied by the fire, he sat back and started setting aside a few camping supplies for later. Belle immediately made a mess of his sleeping bag to make herself comfortable. He stared at the rising smoke from their meal for a while, simply thinking. Mya had asked him to tell her what he knew of pokemon, right? Hmm... "I suppose it's related information - but my grandmother told me once, people used berries to make baked goods for pokemon. Humans ate em too - she always lamented she couldn't make them for the family. I wonder if any of those old recipes are still floating around out there?" 'What were they called? Puff... poff... blocks? Something?'

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me She couldn't eat her piece of the berry slice too fast. She let it sit in her mouth for a bit before finally chewing and swallowing it. She had already returned the berry bag, even though she was tempted to slip another out for her and Eon for later. But no, she wouldn't betray a kindness. Besides, she was just happy they got to try something new. And it seemed Belle enjoyed that too. Mya smiled at the bouncing pokemon. How cute...
"I'd like to try all sorts of berries... any new food, really." She got out some of her travel plates and put the food on them equally, handing one to Arris and putting the other down by Eon. "There's enough there to share with Belle." Mya handed a small travel fork as well, taking out her own. Always carry at least two utensils, just in case.
As she listened, Mya ate, making sure Eon ate his fill before she really dug into the meal. Eon's health was far more important than hers. After all, Mya would be fine, but Eon may not understand their lack of funds for food and the need to ration. So she'd do the rationing.
"Really? That sounds delicious. Maybe we'll see some pokemon bakeries sprout up?" She hummed. "I wonder if some cities will make like... public berry gardens so people can pick them and experiment cooking with them."
"Your granny know a lot about pokemon, huh?" Mya was always interested in what older people had to say about pokemon but not many of them lived in Famine. Those that did were bitter old bastards.
