time: day (morning) weather: clear characters: Professor Victoria Yew, you? battle mechanics: none Professor Yew "All right, Oddish, we're just going to take a nice little walk through the city."While she had started out extremely skittish -- the first time the professor had let her out of her Pokeball, she'd just hidden in the pot of soil the professor had thought she'd like -- the professor's Oddish was getting better. The professor had let her hang out in her office a lot while she did paperwork or processed data, so she was growing accustomed to human-made environments; she'd taken Oddish for walks around the Lab so that she could see and get used to people. There had been a few bumps in the road, but they were progressing together. Now the professor thought she might be ready to actually leave the Lab campus and look around Mistveil a little. The professor probably should have known that was a mistake. Even though there were many more people in Mistveil proper than Oddish had ever seen at the Lab, things went well at first. The professor carried Oddish, to make sure they didn't get separated -- she only had tiny little legs, after all -- and she only hid her face in the professor's shirt about half the time. Then a Pidove swooped down onto a nearby mailbox. Oddish cried out and kicked the professor's arms until she dropped her, then ran into the nearest planter -- full of mushrooms, as few other plants had survived this long -- ducked under the spreading fungi, and buried herself in the soil. Oh dear. The professor walked over to the planter and bent down, speaking softly and soothingly. "It's all right, Oddish, you can come out. Absol and I won't let the Pidove attack you."------- team: Oddish, Absol (in Pokeball) how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Dragon was having a great time! His first couple of outings since that misadventure at the market square in Belleview had been relatively short and uneventful. Yahib had developed the (entirely incorrect) notion that the Nincada was delicate or tired easily. While he certainly enjoyed life at a more leisurely pace than his energetic human partner, Dragon had displayed a calmer, less dramatic passion for a couple of things.
He was, in fact, displaying one such passion with his usual quietness: Hiding. Specifically, hiding just badly enough that Yahib had any chance of finding him; but well enough that they actually had to put some effort in. Dragon definitely had more patience than Yahib for hide and seek, so he'd discovered that if he hid too well Yahib would dramatically give up, proclaiming in a loud voice what a terrible shame it is to lose such a wonderful pokémon, and how absolutely heartbroken they will be to go home without him.
Thus, Dragon felt a surge of pride when a hand dove triumphantly into the planter to grab him, barely a minute into the game. Maybe scattering so much dirt had been overkill.
"Nin-NIN!" He cried out.
Across the road, Yahib stood abruptly. They'd been feeling the underside of benches for any Nincada-shaped lumps when a Nincada-shaped sound had happened somewhere behind them, on the side of the road that didn't have benches.
"I didn't ask for a hint yet!" They objected, but they didn't really mind. Narrowing it down to that side of the street wasn't too big of a hint, they supposed, and they certainly appreciated Dragon's accommodation of their handicap.
Dragon shook off the soil that had just rained down upon him, jostling the large mushrooms he'd been mostly-hiding behind. "Caaad..." he mused quietly, reaching out to poke at one of the healthy-looking green leaves that hadn't been there a moment ago. He bent down, whiskers examining the point at which the leaves met in a small clump. "Nin?" the bug asked the leaves.
Someone was working on the planter outside their house, and had made a bit of a mess of it. Would this be considered cheating, Yahib wondered, if Dragon had already given them a hint?
"Excuse me," they tried, crossing the street, "I don't suppose you've seen a little white bug around? Maybe yay big?" They indicated Dragon's size with the space between their puppeted and un-puppeted hands.

Professor Yew The professor looked up as the stranger approached, initially somewhat embarrassed to be caught talking to a planter -- at least, until she actually saw the stranger, and their bizarre appearance drove all such thoughts out of her head. For a second she simply stared, until she recovered her manners. All right. Masks. That was weird, but she didn't have to be rude. "I'm afraid I haven't seen any such creature ... Are you a trainer?" It was a safe assumption, the professor hoped, to make about someone looking for a Pokemon. She glanced down at the planter, a bit ruefully. "My Oddish is hiding in there, I fear. She gets very nervous."And Yew couldn't help but feel that this person's bright and outlandish appearance would only make Oddish more apprehensive. Meanwhile, in the planter, Oddish turned slightly towards the Nincada now examining her. Oh no! Of all the places she could have chosen for shelter, she had to pick one with a terrifying Bug Pokemon in it! She huddled down further into the dirt, hoping that the Nincada would think she was just some grass and go away. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"That's right!" Yahib confirmed, though they really hadn't been a trainer for very long. It was nice to hear someone else say it! Maybe it was for the best that she couldn't help. It probably hadn't been very fair to ask.
"Oh no!" They crooned. Then, processing "nervous," felt compelled to repeat themself at a whisper, eager to demonstrate that they understood a nervous pokémon required a quieter environment. "oh no...is there anything i can do to help?"
They'd gotten rather lucky with Dragon. They were lucky to have him at all! But while the Nincada lacked his trainer's boistrous energy, he still had a quiet fervor for life and enjoyed exploring new things. They weren't sure if they were equipped to handle a pokémon so nervous it felt it had to hide, rather than do so for fun.
The leaves rustled lightly of their own accord, and Dragon grew bolder in his investigation. He ran his whiskers along the sides of the leaves away from him, feeling for...something. It felt familiar, he knew, but he couldn't place it. Delicately, he gave one blade a nibble.

Professor Yew The professor shook her head. "I appreciate it, but what I've found is that generally she just needs time, space, and quiet. She's not so good with strangers, and ..."They don't come much stranger than you, the professor might have said, if she were a ruder person. She suspected that Oddish would find that odd assemblage of masks quite overwhelming, with all the bright colors and exaggerated faces. But Professor Yew was not rude, so she just let herself trail off. Inside the planter, however, events developed rapidly. That horrible, horrible bug actually bit one of Oddish's beautiful leaves ... with a shriek, the little Grass-type bolted from the planter and threw herself into Professor Yew's arms, getting dirt all over the professor's clothes. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Ah, they hadn't thought of that. Dressed as they were, Yahib had scared the odd child, and it should be no surprise that a particularly nervous pokémon could be equally spooked. "of course," they agreed, still at a whisper, already backing away, "good luck."
Yahib hadn't even made it far enough to turn and recommence the game of hide and seek (at a lower volume!) when the planter exploded with dirt, apparently firing a round projectile at the other trainer. "Are you alright?" They gasped, forgetting their promise of quiet in the excitement. Then they spied some actual greenery caught up in the trainer's arms, and briefly stared down the enormous mental rabbithole of wondering how someone had gotten genuine green-leaf-bearing plants to grow...
Before spotting, positively showered in dirt and beside a couple of sadly uprooted mushrooms, a very startled Nincada. "found you!" Yahib exclaimed in a forceful whisper, and reached out haltingly. "wait. have you seen an oddish?"
"Nin!" Dragon supplied, adding, perhaps superfluously, "cada!"
Yahib struggled to process this. They could usually guess at Dragon's rough intention, and he had definitely supplied an affirmative, but the supplementary information was totally lost on the newbie trainer.

Professor Yew "Oof," the professor said, as Oddish impacted her midsection. She wrapped her arms around the Grass Pokemon, trying not to drop her -- or let her run off again. "Well, I found her."She noticed the Nincada in the planter and put two and two together: presumably the bug had somehow spooked Oddish (again), resulting in her flight from the planter. Then Yew watched her companion reach out to the Nincada. "Is that your Pokemon?" she asked, perhaps a bit superfluously. "Diiish!" Oddish complained, half-sobbing. The bug had bitten her leaf. Horrifying! This was, without a doubt, the worst thing that had ever happened to her, at least since the last worst thing to ever happen to her. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

”YOU did?” Yahib exclaimed, struggling to force their voice down a few decibels as soon as they heard it leave their lips. ”that's great! where-?” They turned to see, and belatedly assembled the facts: Missing Oddish + exploding planter + suspiciously healthy leaves in the arms of the seeking trainer = Oddish located!! ”oh."
”yes, this is dragon!” They confirmed, reaching out for him again, ”my nincada!” Said bug immediately began to climb their arm with cautious confidence. While he was familiar with the positions and shapes of each mask, he still didn't quite trust that they were secure enough to climb. "'Cada!" He supplied again, approaching his trainer's shoulder.
”i don't know what that means,” Yahib confessed, ”did you know there was an oddish in your hiding place?”
”Aaaad,” Dragon huffed in reply to the Grass-type's complaint, extending one leg and both whiskers in the direction of the trembling bundle of leaves. He hoped to convey an apology, but the Oddish did not seem receptive. Or maybe that was just the human's arms.

Professor Yew "Hello, Dragon," the professor said, still holding Oddish. "It's nice to meet you ... and you as well," she added, directing this to Dragon's trainer. "I'm Victoria Yew -- Professor Victoria Yew, with the Pokemon Laboratory."She knew this person had never come in for a starter -- she would have remembered the masks ... unless they hadn't worn the masks when they did so? But then they would know her. And she knew she hadn't handed out a Nincada, although perhaps Dragon wasn't their starter ... "You haven't been by the Lab, have you? I'm the official trainer liaison, so I know most of the trainers who've come through.""Diish," Oddish said unhappily. Dragon's apology was most certainly not accepted. She kicked her legs slightly in Professor Yew's grip, her leaf still stinging. "Dish!""What is it?" the professor asked Oddish, holding her out slightly. "Are you hurt?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?
