Time: Afternoon | Weather: Clear | Battle: None Yahib smiled, though it's unlikely anyone could tell. It was a clear, relatively sunny day. They'd deliberated on this for most of the morning...and all of yesterday.... But the longer they agonised, the sillier their agony felt, and the more certain they became that there truly was only one option. They looked down at the ball in their hand, then across the square. An indistinct, quardupedal shape fled from a distant market stall. A moment later, there was shouting, and a human chasing after it. Something flew overhead, the only obstruction between the sun and the tan paving stones evident in the shadow of its wings. The longer Yahib waited, the more it felt like cruelty. Supposedly, this very square was once used for friendly battles, and they could see why - it was large, the flagstones were remarkably tough, and the regular dents in the ground where it met the street indicated that it probably used to be surrounded by some kind of sturdy fencing. Their biggest fear was releasing a pokémon into an environment it wasn't suited to. The square was relatively empty as the day wound down and everyone went home. Yahib hoped that, at least, the available space would be sufficient. They'd heard of some pretty big pokémon. Deep breath...they pressed the button in just as they'd been told, and threw the ball across the square with all the energy they had, kicking one leg up behind them to keep from falling flat on their face. "Dragon, come on out!" Yahib cried with gusto, mimicking a character from their favourite pokémon-themed comic. The capsule landed with a loud clatter on the flagstones several feet away, and flipped open. A brilliant, formless light burst forth, resolving itself into... A small, round, whitish pokémon with four (or six? what were those things at the front?) legs. It couldn't have been taller than half a metre. Yahib gasped, telegraphing open-mouthed shock with the Trapinch sockpuppet almost permanently on their right hand. ”Oh, that's gotta be a Bug-type!”The gotta-be-a-bug turned to them, wiggling the whiskers (whiskers!! they were whiskers, not more legs!!) on the front of its small, pointed face. Yahib faltered. ”What...is it?”

"Friend, friend, a friend!"
Arris was certain this was the only thought that ever went through Belle the Bounsweet's mind, aside from her usual moods of full-tilt play, sleeping like the dead, or being hungry for sweets. In fact, he was certain it was her only thought ever, when she saw other Pokemon. Case in point? Belle taking off away from him on their way to stop by Arris' house, and down the street towards one of the market squares.
They hadn't been back in Port Belleview long; it was in fact, their last stop on the roundabout cut-short journey the trainer had made around the region. They certainly hadn't explored or wandered in depth, but Arris had wanted to introduce Belle to his house, and formulate perhaps a better travel plan and re-supply them both with an actually decent shower and a real dinner. But, as always, Arris' life was full of misadventures, and he felt like Belle was presenting another to him presently, so he took off after whatever she was chasing. "Belle!! Hey, come back here! Wait a minute!"
She apparently lost track of whatever it was, for she was waiting at the outskirts of the square for Arris to catch up. It seemed pretty empty, since the day was nearing its end - save for... some quite impressive looking something (someone?) in the middle of the square made of a dozen or more faces. Evidently, Belle got tired of waiting, and had also noticed the many-faced-somebody, because she took off again as they - oh it was a person! - threw a pokeball across the square with a surprising amount of energy. Belle immediately paused mid-bounce at the introduction of the little white bug Pokemon, eyes widening in surprise. And then, as the stranger-in-the-masks was speaking in regards to their new partner, she bounded forward again straight up to them! She looked up at the trainer with a look of awe, eyes large and curious as she took in the sheer amount of masks. "Swweeeeeeee...."
The Bounsweet's expression turned gleeful, and she twirled with a happy noise before bouncing over to the newly re-introduced to the world bug Pokemon as well to say hello. By this point Arris had finally caught his breath, and was jogging over. "Sorry!! She's excitable!" he called, "Belle! Wait up!"

Frozen, for just a moment, in a surprised stupor, Yahib stared down at the little red-capped orb that had quite literally bounced right up to their feet. Then, as the pokémon cried out in that high, plaintive note, they lost their shit.
"OooOOOHH!" Yahib cooed, squatting down immediately to something approaching eye-level, some of the masks creaking as they were scraped together at odd angles. Yahib spared a moment to cringe at the damage they'd have to repair. Oh well, too late now. They'd deal with it later.
Before they had the opportunity to reach out and shake a (leaf? it didn't seem to have hands), the presumably-a-Grass-type turned away from them and hopped over to Dragon.
For its part, the bug was taking in its surroundings with slow, deliberate acceptance. It seemed to be taking the time to thoroughly examine something (namely, the flagstones) before moving on to something else (the bouncing Grass-type now rapidly approaching).
Someone was shouting. It was remarkably clear. Yahib wondered who they were shout- oh, of course!. Relucantly, they stood and didn't hear a single creak or scrape, nope, the masks are fine to see someone jogging in what could be considered Yahib's general direction with some lethargy.
Belle? Yahib turned on the spot, making sure there was no-one behind them who could potentially be this Belle.
Deciding to chance it, they waved with their whole (un-Trapinch'd) arm in a grand manner that might have been more appropriate if there were more than a handful of metres between the two. "Hello!" They called out loudly, turning back to the two small pokémon still several feet away, "I think you lost your human!"

Arris blinked in surprise at the quite friendly waving of the other trainer, before breaking out in a grin. Oh, thank Arceus, someone who was friendly! This could have been a whole other load of issues otherwise. "Hey!" he called back, slowing to a stop as they reached the trainer's side. He didn't say anything else for a long moment, just catching his breath again. For a moment he simply examined the other trainer. Ah, so they were masks that Arris had noticed! They looked... astoundingly badass, actually. He looked more than a bit impressed and awed himself, much like his Bounsweet partner had not even a minute before. And then with a deep breath, he offered a look of almost pained amusement. "I do believe you're right, she has."
Belle was busy wiggling her leaves at Dragon's whiskers, delightfully amused at being given so much attention by another Pokemon, even if it was simple examination. It was fun! And also it tickled, which only made Belle even more wiggly. She paused when she heard the new human-shaped friend's call over to her though, and twisted her whole body around in an attempt to look over a shoulder she didn't have. Upon noticing Arris, she bounced lightly side to side. "Boun boun sweeeee!!"
...And then promptly turned right back around to continue playing with the other Pokemon, instead.
Arris, to his detriment, couldn't help the bark of laughter that came from that clear dismissal of him. It was just so.... surprisingly wholesome, for a behavior that would be seen as incredibly rude coming from another human. "Well, I suppose Belle doesn't mind. I'm so sorry, she's on a permanent sugar-high, I think. Probably because she's very sweet, both in personality and physically as a berry. That lil' fella she's intent on is yours, I take it?" He gestured over to the two lightly. "A very healthy looking Nincada!"

Now satisfied that Belle was not just a friend, but a playful one at that, Dragon settled into a lazy game. The berry seemed very sensitive, and the ease with which Dragon could get a reaction out of her only spurred him on. All he had to do was lightly stroke whatever was nearest his whiskers, and enjoy the energetic response.
Yahib looked on with open fascination. So that was their pokémon! It was curious, friendly, and playful. Maybe a little...slower? Than they would have liked, but that was okay! That it hadn't immediately attacked Belle was a very good sign indeed.
"Oh!" They'd had a little routine planned, but the newcomer threw the script out the window before they could utter a word. They were supposed to introduce themself! Revel in the praise of their beautiful artwork! Shake hands! Dispel the entirely reasonable beleif that they were superhuman!
But that was okay. Maybe getting to skip the routine would turn out to be a good thing. "Variety is the spice of life!" Yahib opined aloud, without really meaning to. "I mean! Um!" They thrust the Trapinch forth, teeth open to grasp a hand in a friendly gesture of acquaintence.
Mentally rewinding the conversation, they caught onto something on the second listen. "Nincada!" They twisted to watch Dragon, who had now discovered the best way to elicit those fluid wiggles and was quietly tittering to himself "nin-nin-nin!"
"Yes! I just let it out! I've never seen one before!" Who needs scripts? They just got some very helpful information from this person! They must be friends now!

"Indeed it is!" Arris agreed with the statement with gusto, a wide grin returning to his face. He shook their.... hm. Mouth-hand? back as well in friendly greeting. He liked this person! They seemed friendly. Full of energy. Arris could immediately appreciate that on the spot. He looked over to the two Pokemon as well, laughing at the sheer delight in their wiggly berry partner.
Belle was having an absolute ball. The whiskers tickled, and their new friend was an incredible amount of fun, and he was willing to play. "Swee-eeeee!" she was chortling in return, as she was trying (and honestly quite failing) to get ahold of herself. She did, however, make an attempt with her leaves to try and tickle Dragon back! She'd return to their humans in juuuust a minute... just a little more fun - just a bit! Only a smidge!
Arris nodded to his new friend. "Can't say I've seen one either - just recognize the look from stories and photos I've gotten from my grandmother. Oh, shoot--" he facepalmed lightly, before laughing - a bit self deprecatingly. How was he always forgetting the most basic of things? If his head weren't attached... "I'm Arris, by the by. Nice to meet you! And as it were..." He couldn't help himself. He felt rude for staring so he ought to at least acknowledge why... "Those masks? Woah. They look so cool - they're of Pokemon too, right?" Arris wasn't actually all that sure - some of them didn't look like Pokemon he recognized, although that list of acute knowledge was small anyway. But they looked cool as all get out. Even if they hadn't seen a Nincada, this person must be extremely knowledgeable to have such a collection!

Yahib grasped firmly, applying a much-practiced grip with the pillowy head that had most of the young man's lower arm enveloped in soft foam teeth. Yes!!! It worked!!! They did their best not to vibrate with excitement.
Dragon was enjoying himself. He felt like he'd been asleep for a week, and had plenty of energy for chasing Belle's soft parts as she danced on the spot. What he did not have energy for, however, were the narrow tips of the berry's leaves exploring his upper thorax."Nin!" He cried in adamant denial. Then, higher, more panicked, "niiin!!" He keeled over with a dramatic "aaaaaaaaada," legs stiff and akimbo. He decided to shut his eyes tight for good measure.
Distracted by the show, Yahib had been absent-mindedly shaking Arris' entire arm up and down with increasing vigour. The way the movement jostled a particularly large pair of floral masks brought them back to reality, however, and they released the arm with as much grace as the moment permitted. They certainly weren't going to acknowledge just how little grace that happened to be.
"It's great to meet you, Arris!" Yahib repeated their new friend's name with a little too much volume, eager to show that they wouldn't immediately forget it. "You can call me Yahib! Because that's my name!" They were getting off-track...
Nevermind! Arris had uttered the magic word, and Yahib swiftly reclaimed their discarded script.
"Oh, thank you! They're the coolest, aren't they? I made them all myself!" They gestured up at the three-faced crown, hoping that they hadn't sold the screaming purple...Zwoubat? Something like that. They always forgot. "I took a lot of liberty with some of them, but most of them are pokémon! I write the names on the back because..." they tended to mix them up a lot "...there are a lot of them, and people like to know what they're buying!" Wait, they skipped a part. "I'm sorry, I'm being terribly rude! Would you like to try one on?"

Belle was absolutely shocked at the immediate turn of events! Was she gaining the upper hand? Tickling back in such a joyous silly way and giving as much fun as she was getting!? The panicked call made her pause for a moment - and then he keeled over in such a dramatic fashion that she stopped shock still, mouth open wide in surprise. She looked over to the two trainers and waved her leaves, doing a little twirl. "Boun-bou! Bouuuun!" 'Did I do it dad? Did I win the battle?' she seemed to say - until she looked back at Dragon and immediately freaked out. Oh no! He was so stiff and his eyes were closed! Did Belle kill him!? The little berry immediately started bouncing around the Nincada, making little noises of concern, before looking to the trainers for help. "Swee!?"
Arris' arm, when let go, flung back and he bapped himself in the face with a hand. He refused to acknowledge that he'd been shaking just as vigorously because it had been energetic and friendly, just as much as he refused to admit that because of it, he'd kept going and ended up slapping himself. His hand immediately went back to his pocket as if in a silly shame. "A pleasure Yahib! It's great to meet you too!" he grinned.
"They absolutely are." Arris looked where pointed to, examining the crown with acute interest. That was so neat, to see how an artist could take the interpretations of Pokemon that existed before they... well, existed, and turn them into such unique pieces of art. "Ah, you sell them?" Arris asked thoughtfully. "That's awesome!" The grass-trainer was already considering the possibilities of maybe some new decor... those would look so cool as one of the first things you could see walking inside. "Ah no, not at all, you're alright! Yeah that'd be awesome to see em first-hand if it's alright! Do you have a recommendation of which one?"
His attention was pulled for a minute by Belle's ruckus, and he looked over to the two Pokemon, eyes widening slightly. "Hey you two alright over there!?"

Did Dragon overdo it? Belle's delight was pleasant to listen to, if short-lived. At her panicked cry, he risked cracking an eye open to see her back to him. He shut it again quickly, lest she turn around. Yahib, having seen none of this, was too caught up in their mask-spiel to notice. They took on a deeply solumn air. "Yes, I'm afraid I must sell them. If I give them away, I have no money with which to procure food!" They perked up immediately, however, at the mention of recommendation. Recommending a mask was a big deal! They had to get it just right! They put their free hand to their clothed chin, rubbing it animatedly and making what they considered to be the correct amount of loud thinking noises. "Hmm," they pondered, looking down at their skirt. "Hrrrm," they added throatily, looking Arris up and down. "Why, yes!" Yahib exclaimed suddenly, with a (clothy, practically silent) snap of their fingers, "I do have a recommendation!" They reached behind themself, feeling for the beak beneath one shoulder blade. Just a little lower...their thumb hooked into a wide eye hole, the mesh behind it unattached on one side. They unhooked the strap that they'd laced through it, then reached around their chest to unhook the other strap from the metal ring on the bird mask there. Huh. Were they going through a bird phase? They held the small mask up for consideration. It only covered the upper half of the face, with slightly pointed edges. Most of the mask was taken up by two large eye-holes, with a thin white mesh. Yahib had just begun experimenting with painting actual eyes on the meshes, and so far they weren't proud of the result. The ink they used had bled slightly, creating rather blurred looking black pupils. Combined with the wide, yellow bill upturned into a smile, it made for a pretty goofy mask. Dragon's legs were getting tired. "OH! Wait, I have the...hat somewhere..." They looked down at themself. Oh, there it was, on their hip, a simple string tying it to their belt. They pulled the slipknot loose and the bulky cardboard hat came free. Holding it deftly in the Trapinch, Yahib positioned hat and mask for full effect. On the back of the mask, they could read the name they'd painted for their own customer's benefit. "I'm very proud of this one! A Ludicolo, a high-level Grass and Water type! They're very friendly, and love to par...ty..." Arris' last question permeated Yahib's brain. "Alright? What's...?" They turned to follow their friend's eye, and saw their completely-forgotten-Nincada, legs in the air, on its back. "OH NO!!!" Yahib rushed over, setting the Ludicolo aside without thinking and gesturing ineffectually at their new pokémon. Their hand fluttered over its exposed stomach, legs, the underside of his head - not quite daring to make contact, unsure of what was wrong or what to do about it. Dragon allowed his legs to curl in, limp, and fell onto his side. This game wasn't fun any more. Yahib turned to Arris, hoping his experience would be of any use here. "What's wrong with it?? What do I do???"

Arris nodded, also looking solemn for a moment at the tone Yahib used. He certainly understood that - having enough to eat was extremely important - and oftentimes, especially for artisans, that could be difficult. He grinned at the hemming and hawing over thought, quite amused. The grass-trainer was already deciding he might just have to buy a few masks anyway... three, perhaps? Maybe in bits at a time, depending on the price.
He glanced back towards the Pokemon having certainly a time in the background, before looking back as Yahib procured the mask from their many-layered straps. Oh, wow.... that was actually one of the coolest looking things ever. And it looked like a grass type! Or maybe... the bill, perhaps a green bird? "Ah! It's a two-piece?" Arris looked even more impressed - and grinned brightly at seeing the entire mask ensemble put together. A Ludicolo, huh? And it was a grass and water? And loved to- oh, Yahib had noticed Nincada's troubles.
He carefully picked the mask up so nobody would take it, holding it close as he also approached the two Pokemon, setting the mask down again between himself and Yahib with care and gesturing to Belle to come over to him. She did, immediately, worry in her little eyes as she tugged on Arris' pant-leg with her leaves. "Sweeee!!"
He patted her gently, before bending closer to the Nincada. "Hm..." Well - it didn't look hurt, by any means. Unless it had already been injured straight out of the ball. And Belle just simply didn't attack unless she'd been told to... "Let's see-" He gently reached out to touch the Pokemon, searching him over for any possible injuries, trying to be as gentle as possible, before patting Dragon on the head gently. He turned to Yahib with a genuinely confused look. "I... I'm not sure, to be honest. By all means physically he's perfectly fine. Maybe... well, I know Belle was very sleepy after being out of her ball for the first time. Maybe it's the same? If we can't get him up and running in a moment, there's a newer Pokemon Center not far from here, and they'll have him lookin' spiff and shiny fresh."
Arris scratched behind his ear for a moment in thought, studying the Nincada. Bugs were a very hardy sort, and there was no physical issue that he could see... it could be just tiredness, but sometimes Pokemon just out of the ball were a bit unpredictable in how they'd act. Maybe some water to revitalize would help? Or a little snack? He reached into the bag he always had slung over his shoulder, and searched for a moment before pulling out a very near empty bag of pecha-slices, a camping dish, and his water bottle. He poured some water into the bowl, setting it next to the prone Nincada, before opening the bag and pulling one of the slices out. He waved the quite sweet dried berry in front of the Pokemon's whiskers in an attempt to entice him. "Hey there, you okay, bud? Talk to us, c'mon now."

"I'm glad I have such an expert handy!" Yahib looked on with helpless concern, afraid to interfere in case they got in the way. Arris certainly seemed to know what he was talking about! He had an certain air of confidence as he examined the Nincada, less afraid of causing further harm than Yahib had been. "At least he isn't injured! But..." they weren't sure how to complete the sentence, so they trailed off, watching.
"Sleepy, yes," they nodded, as if the action would convince themself that this was the case. They peered as closely as they dared, looking for any indication of breathing. Did pokémon breathe? A sweet, fruity scent drew their attention, and then turned to see Arris laying out a berry slice next to a bowl of water. "What a good idea! I always like a snack after a long nap! Could 83 years in a pokéball be considered a nap? Or is that more of a siesta?"
Yahib's wasn't the only nose aware of the sweet berry scent, however. Less perfumey like Belle's, more of a raw and familiar smell to the nose of a Bug-type. Dragon's whiskers twitched, legs fumbling.
"He moved!!" Yahib exclaimed, grabbing Arris by the arm and shaking him in their excitement, "he's alright!"
It took a minute to remember what came next. It was as if lying down had sapped all Dragon's energy...but now that he could smell food, a powerful hunger had struck him. Not bothering to stand, he simply extended his front legs to wrap around the hand supporting the food and began to take large, hungry bites, chewing as little as possible in order to make room for the next one.
"Arris, you're a genius! He's okay!"

"Ah, I wouldn't call myself an expert, but thank you!" Arris hummed warmly at the praise. He knew grass types well from the stories of his grandmother, and from studying so hard after the accident with Rebecca and her Torchic, but for a lot of other Pokemon he was completely lost. But something he'd always learned... at least act like you know what you're doing - bowl in with confidence, and everything will turn out okay! It'd worked for him so far, after all.
Arris chuckled - both at being grabbed and shaken by Yahib, and at being tickled by Dragon's whiskers as well. "There we go! He's alright, there's a fella! And hm." He pursed his lips in thought for a moment. "That is... an excellent question. Which one was it, Belle? Nap or siesta?" The Bounsweet, who had practically melted into the flagstones in relief that she hadn't murdered her new playmate, bounced up at the question, tottering in front of the two trainers. She looked as if she was in deep thought for a moment... before finally bursting out in a smile. "Boun sweee!"
Shaking his head, Arris snorted. Helpful, Belle. Very much so. He watched carefully as Dragon grabbed his other hand to nibble the berry slice. He carefully removed his hand - making sure Dragon still had the berry - to bring out another slice, setting it in front of the little bug. "Aw, shucks. Thank you ahaha - seems he's just in need of a good snack! These are about all I've got on me right now, but hopefully it helps placate him a lil bit."
Belle took that moment to notice the Ludicolo mask next to them. She tottered over to it carefully, inspecting it with the curiosity of a small, excitable toddler. Determining that it was very pretty and cool and came from the new friend, Belle nodded to herself. "Sweee-weee...."

”Thank you so much! Those must have been expensive.” Yahib observed as Dragon made short work of the berry slice, inspecting his own legs as if hoping they might magically manifest something edible.
The bug tested the air, straining his neck, whiskers twitching. He could still smell food.
”You're quite right!” They agreed, turning to regard Belle, ”it was most definitely a slumber! Arris, what an intelligent partner you have.” The newfound trainer returned their attention to their Nincada, who had figured out why the food smell hadn't gone away. Dragon rolled deftly to his feet, taking the two steps necessary to approach the second slice. Pecha secured, he settled down for a more gentle nibble. He took smaller, slower bites, taking his time to appreciate the flavour.
Yahib relaxed, and only as their shoulders sagged did they realise how high and tight they'd been holding them. Immediate panic over, they felt a strange kind of guilt they couldn't place. They tried to place it: Did they feel bad for letting Dragon out at all? For not noticing he wasn't okay until someone else pointed it out to them? For diving into their mask-selling spiel when they should have been focusing on their new friend?
”I guess I got three new friends today,” they mused as Belle examined the discarded mask. ”I'm not sure it'll fit you, but you can try!” They reached out to pick up just the mask part, which was pretty much as big as the Bounsweet's entire body, and balanced it gently upright by the beak.

"You wouldn't be wrong on that assumption," Arris nodded. "Absolutely worth it, though. Both for Belle, and to share with others." He chuckled quietly, watching Belle pause from her inspection of the mask to react to the high praise from Yahib. Being told she was intelligent was like lighting a firecracker off in the little berry Pokemon's heart. Her eyes absolutely lit up, and she bounced upwards to do a pirouette in the air with an incredibly gleeful squeal. And then very quickly was taken by her curiosity once again.
Arris then turned his gaze to watch Dragon for a moment. He was glad the Pokemon seemed much more perked up now. Though, if he was honest... he couldn't blame the Nincada for wanting such a nap after an onslaught of Belle's full attention immediately after waking up in the first place. He loved the little grass-type to death, but she could be a handful, especially if she was at full throttle energy. If he were in Dragon's place, he might've done the exact same thing.
"I'd say that's a darn good day, then!" Arris grinned as they looked back over to Yahib and Belle. "A new partner and some friendly pals." He smiled, watching Belle interact. Carefully - so, so carefully - she inched forward towards the balanced mask and pressed her face into it. Her entire face was engulfed by the work of art, but by judging by the muffled little giggling noises now coming from the Bounsweet, she sure didn't seem to mind it. Arris found himself grinning affectionately, before tilting his head over to Yahib. "I forgot to ask - how much are you asking for these masks, anyhow?"
He'd been planning to perhaps get one anyway before... but with how much Belle seemed to like it, now it was quite a certainty!

Yahib watched with quiet glee as the little Bounsweet peered out through the mesh eyes. Her face - her entire body, really - was obscured by the painted wood, but the subtle smile on the bill seemed to dramatically understate her amusement, if those poorly-restrained giggles were any indication.
"I think it suits her!" They addressed their Nincada: "What do you think?"
Dragon paused in his nibbling to look over. From his vantage point, he could see Belle's round body protruding from one side of the mask, and smiling Ludicolo face on the other. It made for quite a sight, as the Bounsweet was visibly doing her best not to jostle the mask in delight.
"Caada!" The bug surmised with a nod, eyes crinkling up in the corners. He returned to what was left of his snack - very little indeed - but kept his eyes on Belle, and that gentle smile never left his face.
Yahib tensed up again at the mention of money. How could they demand anything from someone who had just expressed such generosity?
"Well," they remarked in mock surprise, hand to their chest, "would you look at that!" They gestured to the Nincada, who had just finished off the second berry slice, and was now watching the trainers with mild interest. "I think two pecha slices just about covers it!"
