It was the genuine agreement of Dragon that finally did Arris in. Belle's unrestrained childish little giggles, the sheer support from both Yahib and their Pokemon... he covered his mouth and burst into helpless laughter. It had been a long while since he'd laughed like that, and when he finally got himself out of control, his ribs hurt, and from inside the mask Belle seemed to be near about vibrating with joy.
"Oh, Belle, you really are a special lil' sweetheart, aren't'cha," he chortled. It took him a moment before he coughed to clear his throat and really process what exactly Yahib had said, and when he did realize, he turned with a look of quiet astonishment. "Are you absolutely sure? That's so generous of you to do..." It really was such a nice gesture - Arris hoped it wasn't going to cause any harm of any kind - and he certainly was willing to pay.
Belle very very carefully edged her way out of the mask to pop her head over the top of it and wiggle her leaves at Yahib with a gentle squeal of delight. "Bouuuuu!!" she said, as if in her way to say thanks. And when she looked back to Dragon, she waved her whole body from side to side with the delight and energy of a small toddler. Friends, friends, friendly friends! The little berry loved it when everyone was happy. It was certainly the best way to be! "Belle's certainly taken quite the liking to y'all," Arris noted with a grin. "Gotta say I agree!"

While Yahib didn't join in their friend's laughter, it was pretty easy to set them off too, so they enjoyed Arris' mirth by proxy, glad to witness such joy without the breathlessness that came with it.
"Special's the word!" They agreed, adjusting their weight to reach out for Dragon with their free hand. The Nincada closed the gap, placing his two front legs on his trainer's palm. Even with only half his weight there, he proved surprisingly heavy. Somehow, Yahib had developed the idea that pokémon were relatively light, as though they might be hollow.
"I am absolutely sure!" They added, as Dragon examined their gloved thumb, "generosity should always be repaid in kind! The mask is yours." Two pecha slices were probably equivalent in value - they knew dried berries were expensive - but even if they weren't, it wouldn't be the first time Yahib had let a mask go for less than they might have asked a less impoverished customer. Maybe they should take a trip to one of the richer neighbourhoods, they usually got a couple of bites that fed them well for a week.
"And I definitely like you too, Belle," they concurred, "I don't think I've ever seen a pokémon so full of laughter!" Though, admittedly, they hadn't met a lot.
Dragon began an attempt at climbing Yahib's arm, stopping periodically to get a close look at some of the masks he was using for purchase. This...was a strange trainer.

"Well, thank you Yahib - I appreciate that a lot." Reaching down, Arris gently picked up the mask and its hat, opening his bag to stow it in his bag - careful not to let it scrape on anything, sitting carefully on the very top, on the cushion of one of Arris' jackets.
He watched Dragon examine Yahib's hand, before beginning to climb his trainer's arm. Arris' eyes crinkled in happiness. The two certainly looked like they were a good fit for one another, and if he was honest, the bug pokemon looked like it would blend in as a mask itself, if posed right! He scooped Belle up gently, placing her atop his head almost like a hat, where she immediately melted into a happy little puddle. "She's certainly a cheerful one. It's really nice, actually - her happiness is infectious, so I find it hard to be in a bad mood these days with her as my partner! I think her only two modes are full throttle, or full nap-time, ahaha!"
Arris' knees popped with a sharp little click noise as he stood back up. He winced, before stretching himself out. "Oof! So, out of curiosity - with your new partner, you thinkin' of taking on the challenge of finding some more teammates as a trainer? Welcome to trainer-hood, by the way!" He paused for a moment, thinking. "Actually - do you have any resources for yourself, Pokemon-wise, going ahead?"

"You're not the first person I've heard say that!" Yahib remarked, losing sight of Dragon as he neared their shoulder and turning to focus on Arris, who now wore an only vaguely-Bounsweet-shaped hat. "Pokémon are good for humans, and humans are good for pokémon. I don't think one is complete without the other!"
Dragon found a place to settle, resting his belly on his trainer's clothed shoulder. His legs dangled either side of it, behind the masks there. He felt surprisingly secure, and could even rest his head on the top of a mask here. He let out a content, formless whine.
It probably was a good idea to stand up. Yahib did so slowly, expecting the motion to cause the Nincada to lose his grip and slip off, but Dragon barely even wobbled. He was clearly quite practiced at this.
"More teammates...Yes, I think that's a great idea!" From their shoulder came an emphatic "Niiin!" "I think Dragon agrees! Thank you!" Although, they weren't really sure how they'd achieve that...they should probably worry about that later, though. They'd only just gotten one pokémon, after all.
"I, uh, borrowed some books! But some of them were a little confusing..." they stared at their feet, recalling the long paragraphs they'd read about Shuckles...and how little of it made sense. "Oh!" they added, startling Dragon, who tightened his grip on their shoulder, "I bought a phone! I heard it had something! A pokédex! For trainers? But I couldn't figure out how to use it..." they fished around under a large Phanpy mask, and produced an incredibly shiny, brand-new phone. The plastic cover was still on the screen.

"I find that I agree with that sentiment entirely," Arris agreed enthusiastically. "Most folks I've talked to have been saying like... it's a whole new world and a new culture. It's like the entire region's been blinded this whole time, and now that they're back its like, woah! We've been missing a part of our entire existence!"
Belle mumbled something indistinguishable and bapped Arris gently on the head with her leaves, as if she agreed, but didn't move much further than that. He patted her on the side gently. His gaze was also on Dragon as Yahib stood up - but it seemed like the little bug had it all under control, so there wasn't a problem there! He grinned at the Nincada's enthusiastic reply about new teammates. 'Yep!' he thought. 'Yahib's gonna make a great trainer, there's no doubt about that.'
"Ah! Understandable, a lot of those books..." Arris grimaced. "Very antiquated. But the Pokedex, yes!" Arris pulled his own phone out, flipping it around so Yahib could see the screen clearly too. "Oh wow, haven't had it for long, eh? Sometimes these things can be a little learning curve, but here! This over here's the Pokedex app - I think newer phones like yours are coming with it in patches now thanks to the Pokemon Lab? But from what I understand, it involves scanning the Pokemon you're lookin' at using the camera, here - it's this icon that pulls it up..." Arris pulled up the camera on his phone, before pointing it towards Dragon on Yahib's shoulder. Once it dinged he pulled it back over to show the data entry for Nincada pop up. "I think we're able to see a database of all existing Pokemon anyway, but it gives more in-depth information based on the ones we physically come into contact with. I think. I can't guarantee that's true, actually... uh - Unfortunately the actual in-depths of it and how it works are something I am.... not familiar with."
Arris laughed it off though - he hated not knowing things, but even tiny things helped. And he did know where Yahib could get real help setting themselves up though! "The people who would know are next town over, in Mistveil. That's where the Pokemon Laboratory is. Professor Yew installed the app for me, actually - I've only just been figuring it out myself through trial and error, though..." He scratched his cheek in thought. "But as for like, supplies like Potions, Pokeballs n' stuff? They have a system giving packages out to trainers to get them started. It was a huge help for me."

Yahib thought that was a great comparison – that the return of pokémon was like the recovery of a lost sense.
”Yes, it's very new!” They confirmed, slipping it under the wide-mouthed mask on their face to unlock it with their nose. ”I've never had a phone before, it took a lot of saving up!” Well, the family home had a landline, but they'd never had a mobile before. It was quite the steep lurning curve, as Arris said.
They watched with rapt attention as their friend navigated the menu, explaining each function. Yahib did their best to follow along, using the thumb of the hand holding the phone to press the screen. ”It's really quite easy!” They beamed, having pulled up the pre-installed Pokédex app and then the camera. They paused to read the entry on Nincada. ”Bug and Ground, huh? I would never have guessed! And they can't see very well...” that explained Dragon's reliance on tactile information.
”I'm sure we can figure it out together!” Yahib encouraged, raising their phone to point the camera at Belle. A loading screen appeared as soon as they took a (rather blurry) photograph, and the app hanged there for so long that they began to fear they'd somehow broken it. But then a much clearer image of a Bounsweet appeared, alongside a slew of information, not all of which made sense to them. ”This is great!” They turned the screen to show Arris.
”Ah! I've heard of the lab! That's pretty close, and with Dragon with me it'll be a much safer walk than normal!” Not that they'd ever felt in any real danger along Route 7.

"I'll imagine, yeah - but certainly worth it, especially now with everything going on." Arris nodded, before letting out a noise of surprise. "Ground? Oh, wow - I didn't expect that, actually. I just thought bug type. Look at you Dragon, full of surprises! That's really neat." That meant he had resistance against fire types, if Arris remembered. Which... meant that he was in a better position than say, Belle had been, against Rebecca's Torchic. That was fantastic! Shame about the eyesight, though.
"Hah? Oh!" Arris tried to stay as still as he could as Yahib took the photo, and waited patiently for the app to load. It took a bit longer than he expected, which he hm'd about. "Might've been a lot of info for it to load. Not a big deal, just means a slightly longer wait's all. Hmmm...." He read some of the readout quickly as they shared it. "...Sweat can be used as- oh, eugh." Arris grimaced. "Imagine drinking Pokemon sweat. Why did enough people do it to warrant it being in the database? That's almost as interesting as it is mildly... I'm not sure." He didn't really have a word to describe that. It was just... well, it was sure information, alright.
Arris grinned enthusiastically, stifling the instinct to nod in agreement. "Yep," he said instead. "You'd be right, it's just a hop and a skip away. That's where Belle and I met, too - because of that new Trainer program. Dragon'll definitely make it easier - especially since wild Pokemon are actually startin' to show up on the road, too! It's crazy, really. They're just everywhere,. A month ago I would've just thought this was a particularly crazy daydream. But here we are - Wingulls on the docks, all sorts of critters in the grass, and the eaves... it's so cool!"

Yahib laughed at their friend's reaction, a high, boistrous sound that bounced Dragon on their shoulder. The Nincada dug his claws in, turning his head to glare at his trainer. "Heh- ow! I guess Dragon doesn't like that," they observed, struggling to contain their mirth; though the shock had mostly killed it. "It does sound pretty gross! I wonder if it's even safe to drink?"[break][break]
So Belle had come from the Pokémon Lab? "I bet there's so much information on Bounsweet because the lab had one!" Yahib exclaimed, suddenly certain of this in the face of close to zero evidence. "I've noticed a lot more pokémon lately, it's wonderful! I can't go outside without seeing a new one!" They supposed at some point they'd stop being new, but they'd never stop being wonderful. They wondered what great things it would be possible to do and make with the help of pokémon.[break][break]
"How do you think they get it?" They asked seriously, trying to imagine a mechanism by which a pokémon's sweat could be easily collected. They nearly lost themself in laughter again at a particularly striking image. "Do you- do you think they have treadmills? With buhh-" the syllable came out an incomprehensible huff of air, and they dissolved into laughter again. Dragon, having enough of this, leapt from his trainer's shoulder directly onto Arris', as he looked much more stable. "WITH BUCKETS!" Yahib screamed, doubling over in fits of breathless laughter.

"Ah, you're probably right! That would make a lot of sense, with her being in lab to study the data off her ball first-hand..." He wondered for a moment what it would be like to have been one of those lab Pokemon. How were they kept? Stored? Was it just a clinical room abandoned with shelves and shelves of Pokeballs? It was... kind of depressing to think about.
He shook off the thought as he queued back in to the conversation. "Right? It's great! I love seeing all this new life all over...." Arris paused for a long moment as he took in Yahib's second question. His expression went through a myriad of looks - concern, disgust, consternation, before finally settling on mildly-disturbed confusion. How... how did Bounsweet sweat get collected? Especially in enough quantities to actually like.... sell? What did - how would they-- His thought process totally broke off as Yahib burst into laughter; he felt himself grinning along, and he could feel Belle wiggling on his head in mirth herself, just from the cheerful energy. Arris bit his lip as he tried to imagine Belle on a treadmill. Just.... this little rotund berry like some energy-shot downing jock just going to town, tiny little legs flying, a serious look, the towel draped over the stem....
Arris let a sharp breath out of his nose in laughter, his cheeks turning red as he tried to physically restrain the laugh - which was bubbling over in the form of short, staccato-quick audible breaths. "Oh! Heya!" He set his hand carefully on Dragon as the bug jumped ship, making sure he had a good grip. He was distracted only for a moment, though, as Yahib dealt the finishing blow. "Buckets!" he echoed, before raising his hands to cover his face and breaking down into absolute helpless cackling. He was trying so hard to keep steady for both Belle and Dragon, but oh Arceus it was making his abs hurt! But he couldn't stop giggling - the mental image was already enough but imagining buckets hung over the sides, suspended in air for this weirdly steady drip - Arris was completely breathless, his laugh actually soundless aside from the quiet definitely amused wheezing of air.

Yahib had to straighten up. They could feel entirely too many muscles (who knew they had that many!) objecting to their mirth; but every time they managed to stop laughing, it would abruptly start up again with a loud guffaw.[break][break]
They tried to put their hand on Arris' shoulder for support, but found it already occupied. In fact, both were. In a moment of breathless calm, they found they were able to speak:[break][break]
"It seems your party has grown, and mine has shrunk!"[break][break]
That statement unexpectedly set them off again, but it was short-lived. After a couple more false starts, they managed to straighten up unaided and regain control.[break][break]
"Whooo!" Yahib exhaled sharply, "I have to carry less inventory in future!" And maybe shout less. Were they shouting? It felt like they'd rattled their ears so much with laughter they couldn't hear properly.[break][break]
They looked down to survey the damage. At least one mask was creased where it had folded with its wearer's waist, and another was missing a horn. Better than they expected!
