time: day, morning weather: raining outside characters: @cadin, Professor Victoria Yewbattle mechanics: none Professor Yew "Cadin Haring?"This time, there were a few people waiting in the Lab's main waiting room, so the professor wasn't sure which one was Cadin. Glancing around the room, she waited for them to identify themself. Cadin was the professor's only starter appointment today, though she did have a fair amount of paperwork to review after this. And then maybe she could take Oddish out to play in the rain. It would mean getting soaked -- though she was, fortunately, dressed for the weather -- but Yew thought Oddish would enjoy the moisture. "You're here to pick a starter Pokemon, correct?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Cadin sat in the waiting room with their hands in the pockets of their paint smeared hoodie, leaning into the plastic backing and shaking their leg vigorously against the linoleum floors. Loud music echoed off of their headphones into the silent room until Professor Yew broke the silence. They could hear their name from anywhere, on account of the scolding they got from home after tagging the alley near the hydro plant. It was the only time they got caught by the cops in their entire gig, but something just caught their eye and gave the police the extra seconds they needed to tackle Caden to the ground and cuff him. The trashbags in the alley were, moving? Not only that but they looked alive...with a face and mouth n' everything. A pokemon? Here? They've been gone for ages. At first they thought it was the paint fumes finally getting to them but on the cop car ride home they saw bird pokemon flying above. The city was even drawing in pokemon that seemed to like electricity, small fuzzy yellow ones leeching right out of electrical outlets and power converters.
"Yo, thats what I'm here for yea. Whatd'ya got for me proffessor...."
They looked around for anything indicating a name, something, anything so it looked like they weren't some punk who just rolled up wanting a pokemon. Though thats exactly what they were. They found her ID badge and squinted trying to read the name
"Yeeeww? Yea, anyways what little guy's in there for me huh?"

Professor Yew Cadin's response was a little more ... rough and tumble than the professor was used to, but she rolled with it, smiling at him. "Let's go see, shall we?"Assuming they followed her, she led Cadin back down a corridor and into a plain white room furnished solely with two chairs set beside a device in the wall. The device had six cups, each of which held a Pokeball, and a screen beside them. "I am Professor Victoria Yew," the professor added as they entered the room. "I'm the Laboratory's chief trainer liaison, so I'll be the person to contact if you need anything -- I'll be sure to give you one of my business cards before you leave." how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Sweet, so uh...i dont s'pose you know about any pokemon that look like trash bags right? I saw some on my way here and I'm not sure if it as for real or just the paint fumes gettin to me you know?"
They sat down in front of the pokeballs and glazed over them as they scratched the back of their messy hair. The pokeballs shone back the artificial light beaming from above and Cadin couldn't believe it. They felt so surreal that a living breathing creature was encapsulated inside these balls and he would soon be making a bond with one. Their hand hovered over them with some hesitation, looking over their shoulder to the professor for some sort of cue. For the first time in their life, they didn't know what to do.
"So uh, how does this work? I just...pick one or? Whats the deal with these lil guys..."

Professor Yew "That sounds like a group of Trubbishes." The professor nodded. "They're definitely real -- they eat trash. I can show you a picture if you like, but perhaps we should focus on this."The professor turned her attention to the Pokeballs on offer. "You don't have to choose blindly, of course. Let me tell you what your options are ..."She turned on the screen beside the device and scrolled through images. As each Pokeball's inhabitant appeared on screen, the cup under it lit up. "Let's see, you can choose from ... Boufallant, Wooper, Pincurchin, Falinks, Chimchar, and Shinx. An interesting array of choices, there! Let me know if you want to know more about any of them."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? | | | | | | Bouffalant | Wooper | Pincurchin | Falinks | Chimchar | Shinx | male | female | female | genderless | male | female |

Cadin scrolled through the choices, for the first time they were taking their time thinking about their choice. Their eyes settled onto the urchin looking one and slowly reached out to the pokeball. Out sprung the pincurchin onto their lap, its spines lazily moving about with small flashes of light sparking from the tips periodically. It inched its body out and looked upwards to Cadin with its sleepy eyes, letting out a small purr as it did.
"Oh hey lil guy, whats this one? it looks pretty rad."
They gently scooped up the pincurchin only to accidentally poke one of its spines into their thumb. With a loud yelp they tried to stifle their pain but the spine sent waves of shocks into their body.
"Ghhh-ff...my fault, that was all me. Didn't- aghhh..pay attention to its spines. I like 'em! Though I gotta say this feels-hhh...way way worse than a cop's tazer. Yo, this ain't lethat voltage right?"

Professor Yew "Oh, be careful," the professor said, eyes widening as the Pincurchin zapped Cadin. The mention of a cop's taser was a little concerning too, but Cadin had passed the lab's background checks, so she was more worried about whether they were going to electrocute themself on this Pokemon. "That's a Pincurchin, and as you've discovered, they emit electric current through their spines. But, no, they shouldn't be lethal or even cause lasting harm, at least not at their typical voltage -- they can output more current when attacking. Still, you might want to invest in rubber gloves. At least, if you're still interested in that Pokemon?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Ugh, yea I'm interested. I like this one's style. Maybe it'll teach me to slow down a pinch too, less I want to get shocked again."
They set the pincurchin on their lap and took its pokeball, taking a moment to admire the device for the first time in their hand. They let the ball roll around in their hands, fixated on the sheen and gently squeezed it.
"Yea, yea I can roll with this. Hell yea little dude. And yea don't worry too much 'bout me. I wear gloves anyways while painting so rubber shouldn't be too much of an adjustment."

Professor Yew "All right, looks like you're all set, then." That was notably quicker than most of the trainers Professor Yew had helped, but she didn't mind -- she admired someone who knew their mind, and that meant she could get back to her other work more quickly. "Here, take my business card -- it's got my phone number and instructions on adding the Pokedex to your phone. Don't hesitate to call or text me if you need help as a trainer."Standing, the professor added, "The room is booked for half an hour, so you can stay here and get to know your new Pokemon if you like. Or you're free to take it for a walk, check out the Lab, or just head out."||FINISHED|| how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? Here's your starter's statblock!
