(Takara will accept any pronouns this thread! No it please!) Bonding with a pokemon was... interesting in theory. There were no books on it, no articles written about it. Probably, back before they disappeared, bonding was just considered something that came second nature. However... when it came to bonding now that was a question. Takara felt as if they needed to understand Shri better and vice versa. They got along but it felt less about them knowing each other and more about the fact Takara had her pokeball in his possession. She was his starter pokemon and he felt he needed to really understand her better. After escaping from work and shrugging on his favorite tank top that showed off a majority of his tattoos, and his favorite baggy cargo pants, and tying up his hair of course, he was ready to try and do this thing.
A game. It was similar to soccer in a sense, although a lot less about scoring and more about just having a good time. Shri was fairly quick on her feet despite her small size. She hardly came up to the half-way point of Takara's shin. She was so young, but filled with fire. She hit the ball hard with her front paws and Takara caught it with a quick movement of his foot and carefully kicked it back to her, holding back full force. They kept this going for a while before Takara finally put a foot on the ball and sighed. "Is this like... doing anything? Are we doing this right?"
Shri gave a bright smile and a happy cry.
Hm... the game would be better with more players but... well, Takara hesitated on taking out any more of their team. What to do.

"So lil buddy, whaddya want to do? Damn, should've asked the professor what I should do from here as a trainer but..."
They looked over their shoulder to the pincurchin lounging about, its spines lazily wobbling about. At Cadin's voice the pokemon's slug-like body pointed upwards with a low hum, before plopping back down.
"Not, very active are you huh? Well thats fine. You don't need to stress yourself over stuff if you don't want to, you hear? I...guess we could play somethin'..."
They looked around for something, anything they could provide for as play to their little pincurchin, sliding through an alley and exiting to the sight of a trainer playing ball with another pokemon they assumed. Cadin raised an eyebrow, and looked over to pincurchin who returned the glance. A smile cracked across their face, and from the corner of the alley they hopped the fence over to the trainer ahead hoping to catch their attention. The rattle of the metal echoed in the air and for once in their life they tried to look approachable to mild success.
"Yo, you there! Uh, don't s'pose you're a trainer too yea? I just got this, pincurchin i think it was. I'll just uh...her down here and i guess they can play? I dunno how to be a trainer so...yea."
The pincurchin crawled down the fabric of Cadin's paint stained hoodie and plopped onto the ground, rolling onto its feet and inching her way to the riolu and the ball.

The noise had both Takara and Shri look up to see who it was. Oh! Perhaps they wanted to play too. Takara lightly kicked the ball back towards Shri and she stopped it with her paws, looking back at the stranger. Was that.... a pokemon clinging to them?
Takara smiled at the other trainer. "Sure am! Pleasure to meet you. I'm Takara and this is Shri. You two are more than free to join our game. There aren't really rules other than just... push the ball around." They looked to Shri. "I'm just trying to bond with her a bit, you know? Become friends. I feel like that's important."
Shri watched the pincurchin curiously as it approached the ball, she gently pushed it with a happy cry. More players! This would be so fun!
"To be honest, I don't really know how to be a trainer either, but a strong bond is the first real step! Especially with your starter." He smiled down at Shri and she smiled back up at him.
"Did you just get your pokemon?" Takara was lucky, they had a slightly head start. But... only by a little while. They've had Shri for about... a few weeks now? And even then a lot of it was just guess work.

Cadin looked on and tried to straighten their posture, but their messiness still read as a street hooligan. They looked down at the ground and huffed before looking over to Takara
"huh? Yea, professor Yew gave her to me. Figured gettin a pokemon would help me straighten out you know? Tryin' to be on the up and up and, not considered a punk. At least by cops, they got me real good the other day and I saw livin trash. Yew called 'em trubbish and supposedly they eat garbage, got distracted and caught. Shame too, the place i was tagging was lookin real good. I really want to to go back there to finish what I started though. Dropped my spray paint there too, hope the trubbish dont hurt themselves on tryin to chomp on one..."
They looked over to pincurchin who was still scuttling forward pushing the ball with its forehead towards the riolu, kicking it off with a light tap and picking up its still slow pace with a happy electric chirp.
"She ain't the fastest thing alive but she has attitude when she wants to show it. Gave me a good shocking when I accidentally pricked myself on one of its spines, and I think she wants to try her best too. Look at her go! Hell yea lil dude! Heh, her shock was just as bad as that time i got tazed after tagging a Salve Co. billboard. Fine piece of art that was, but it prolly got cleaned off by now. Can't have somethin with a splash of color on Salve Co. property huh? Though I guess legally speaking that was considered vandalism, woops."

Takara listened patiently and with a bit of nostalgia. Ah, they remembered getting into trouble in their younger years. Once college started, though, Takara had to stop all that and focus on studies. But alas, Takara had no real artistic talent. Most of what they did were simple pranks, but still.
"That's a shame though," Takara said with a frown. "That you are seen that way. I mean, street art is art the way I see it. It isn't hurting anyone." It was the honest truth, but half the time Takara found their hands tied. They may be trying to force Salve Co. to be better, but they can't do anything about the law. They did turn their attention to the pincurchin and smiled. What a cute pokemon! Shri gave a happy chirp and pushed the ball back to the pincurchin, pushing it gently so there was plenty of time for her to push it back. Shri smiled up at Takara, enjoying the game even more now that there were more players. Although... huh! So that was who painted on the billboard! They smiled and chuckled slightly. "Oh! I think I saw that! I thought it was really clever myself, to be honest. Must of taken some time!" Takara looked back to Shri. "I get what you mean though, about your partner pokemon. Shri helps keep my head on straight during the day. I honestly don't know how I managed so long without her, to be entirely honest." At the mention of her name, the riolu looked up and smiled. Takara could only smile back.

Roran straightened, nearly bending backwards as he stretched out. Leaving after lunch may have been a bad idea, but he refused to travel in the midday heat, and Helioptile had seemed entirely too content sunbathing on a rock.
'ile! The pokémon at his heels interjected. Roran was still new to this, and Helioptile was proving difficult to interperet, which frustrated both parties at times. This time, however, it was being very plain. Its body, nose-to-tail, was ramrod stiff. This put its head so close low that its long ears folded onto the ground like ribbons.
Following its gaze, Roran could see figures tossing a ball around on the other side of the park. One of the figures was clearly a pokémon, and for a moment he thought it might be another Helioptile...but then it turned, and he saw that its limbs were far too long. Its silhouette struck him as deeply familiar.
”You want to watch?” He asked, but Helioptile had already darted off on all fours without confirming that he was following. Roran hastened after it with quick strides – it could be hard to keep up with when it made up its mind.
Roran dropped his bag onto a bench as soon as he was close enough to, but Helioptile didn't stop. Instead, it made a beeline for the ball. It stopped short, however, when it nearly ran headlong into the imposing black spines of a Pincurchin.

Shri was enjoying the game quite a bit. It was so fun! The company was nice and she was excited for when they really started to play. It seemed to be all about warm ups right now. But her attitude soon changed and her head faced the direction of an incoming... pokemon? "Riii," she said, drawing Takara's attention. He gave her a quizzical look before she pointed. Oh! More players! Takara smiled at the incoming pokemon and stifled a laugh when it almost ran into the pincurchin's spines. "Hello! Would you like to join us?" they asked, finally noting the trainer as he approached. Takara raised a hand in greeting. "Hey! You guys interested in joining the game? It's just, uh... kicking the ball around. Trying to bond with our pokemon and what not." Man, bonding with a pokemon was not straight forward, was it? Takara looked at Shri, she seemed very happy and smiled at him. Aaw. That was sweet. Besides, the more players there were the more fun the game would be! Maybe they could split into teams with their partner pokemon.... maybe make some makeshift rules or just try to kick the ball around and work together? Who knew.

"Hell yea, look at her go. Shes got some real energy to her. Shoot, I dunno what to name her actually. Can't be goin' around nameless, but I can't giver a crap name either...hm.."
Cadin pondered for a while, taking in their environment and darting their eyes around for any sort of inspiration. When a helioptile came running over though they snapped out of their focus. Cadin raised an eyebrow at this lizard-like pokemon barreling its way over. Pincurchin headbutted the ball over to the riolu and slowly inched over to the new face, lighting up her spines as a form of greeting and gently sharing a spark of its electricity that showed in a small yellow arch from a spine gently touching the helioptile's forehead.
"Yo, whassat pokemon? Pinny looks cool with 'em. You know, like Penny but it looks like a pincushion...oh wait thats why she's names PIN-curchin...huh.."

"Don't think I've got much choice," Roran huffed, sounding more put upon than he felt. He returned the wave, however, and strode over unhurriedly. "This might be just the game I need!" He declared with one hand on his wide hip, the other gesturing to the Electric-type. "Helioptile is hard to bond with."[break][break]
He liked it well enough, but it was an enigma. Roran had assumed that the long walk north would do them good, allow them to get to know one another. All Roran had learned about his pokémon was that Helioptile liked mud baths, and wasn't afraid to share.[break][break]
Although, it seemed to be....bonding?...okay with that spiky pokémon. Helioptile's face (literally) lit up when the first small arc of electricity graced its skin. It struggled to summon some of its own. This was not something it had found the knack for yet, but it did manage a small spark of greeting, which immediately jumped from its nose to one of Pincurchin's spines.

Shri caught the ball on the last serve, holding it there as she gave a proper greeting to the two newest members of the game. Perhaps this was enough for the game to take place? She gently kicked the ball over to the newcomer, hoping to go ahead and introduce them into the game.
"Pinny sounds like a lovely nickname," Takara chuckled before looking at the newest arrival. "Well, I'm glad to hear! Hmm... we should actually probably start a game of sorts? We could team up with our pokemon. But uh... I don't know if there should even be a point system as much as working together." This wasn't supposed to be a win-lose sort of deal, just a chance to understand their pokemon better.
How was this even going to work? "Any ideas, fellas?" It would have to be a fair game for each of their pokemon, of course. Maybe just a simple game of kickball, Pokemon-style, would be good. Just kicking the ball to each other and seeing how each pokemon does? Man, what a conundrum.

"I duno, Pinny don't seem the type to be physically able to keep up to anything more than this lil game of kickball. Plus, she might pop the ball on her spines if she ain't careful. Or zap the thing by accident.."
Cadin stared down at the ground and kicked around loose rubble as they furrowed their brow in deep thought. This was the first time in a while that they actually slowed down, always constantly hopping fences from one tagged spot to another leaving behind a noxious trail of paint in their wake. Yesterday they were just a delinquent artist who flunked med school, and now they had a responsibility to this living breathing pokemon playing in front of them. It felt like having a child, the dread of responsibility sinking in deeper the more Cadin thought on it. They shuffled professor Yew's card around in their pocket contemplating giving her a call later, but at the moment they let Yew's words echo around in his skull.
"So how'd you decide on your starters? I dunno if everyone in the whole region is flocking to Yew since this uproar..."
They glanced over to the helioptile and smiled, at least Pinny had another electric type to bond with and not electrocute.
"Whaddya suppose they're doin with that, I'm no electrician but I guess electric types like to share voltages as a hello?"

Pleased that it had an Electric-type to communicate with on its own level, Helioptile turned to its trainer with a pointy-toothed smile. Roran returned it briefly, the movement of his moustache probably telegraphing the smile over the distance much better than his face would. He'd watched the sparky exchange with interest, half-expecting that the pokémon were preparing for a (friendly? he hoped) battle.[break][break]
The lizard darted after the ball as soon as it spied the movement, delicately bumping the ball with its nose in the direction of the Pincurchin. Roran should probably give it a nickname, too, but he wasn't sure when or how he was supposed to decide on something like that. He figured (and hoped) that it would come to him in time.[break][break]
"Three teams of two, trainer and pokémon?" Roran mused, "I haven't played a ball game in a long time, but are either of you familiar with Blinders? Everyone pairs up, and one half of the pair is blindfolded. The other half shouts instructions. Only the blindfolded people are allowed to touch the ball. We could blindfold our pokémon." Though he wasn't entirely certain Helioptile would understand the rules, it clearly enjoyed chasing a ball.[break][break]
"I went to Yew too," he said to the rough-looking trainer, "I thought it would be a tough choice at first, but, something about Helioptile..." he gestured to the pokémon, now sat on its haunches and watching Pinny. He didn't know how to finish the sentence. Fortunately, he didn't have to. "I think I've read about that before. Exchange voltages...looks like exactly what they were doing."

Blinders, huh? Takara had heard about it but... hm. Cadin did have a point. Pinny would have trouble to really keep up and she might pop the ball. Although there were worse things that could happen. The game could end when the ball popped? It wasn't like it cost much anyway. "We could do that, but I think Pinny shouldn't be blindfolded, you know? We could also make it more fair to her by like... not letting our pokemon use their hands? Only their feet. Or even us having a delay in what we ask our pokemon to do. Like, Pinny gets a head start on movement and then we respond 30 seconds after?" The game had to be fair to Pinny, after all.
Ah. How to explain how Takara got a hold of Shri. It... wasn't at the lab of course, but she also wasn't a gift? It just kinda happened. Oh well. Takara looked down to Shri and she looked up and smiled at him. "I just thought she was neat," he said with a chuckle.
"And, ya know, if the game doesn't work out the way we plan, that's fine. I think it's more about the fun of it." This was just about.... earning trust and just getting to know their pokemon better. It didn't have to be perfect.

Cadin looked over to Pinny and crouched down to her level. She lit up her spines in glee and sent small sparks up into the air. She chirped in delight at the notion of a challenge and inched towards Roran.
"Huh, looks like she's rarin and ready to go! I like her attitude, won't quit until she's done. Though we might actually want to do something about her spines, if anyone has foam peanuts? Or, somethin' to maybe cap her spines?"
They pondered it for a bit as Pinny gently smushed her face into Cadin's legs, nuzzling it and chirping progressively faster.
"What, you don't like havin your spines capped huh? I guess...I should ask Yew later?"

Hmm.... There were options. "Alright," he said after a moment. "This ball I got is industrial grade rubber... so, what if Pinny stood guard at a goal post we designate and tries to keep the ball from going in? She can use her electricity to move the ball away! That way, she isn't having to like, run after the ball or anything. And it might be good practice for her to get control over her electrical powers, right?" It was a thought... maybe not the best, but it may play to Pinny's strengths. It would also give a better advantage over pokemon that could run well, like Shri. Except she would be blindfolded and dependent on Takara's directions. "How does that sound? Yay, nay?" Maybe it would work out. Who knew! This might actually be very fun.
