Professor Yew "Diell Stormcaller?" Once again, the professor looked out over the waiting room, wondering a little if the individual who'd made this appointment would match their last name, which she could only describe to herself as rather badass. She didn't see anyone in the room who absolutely leapt out to her as a "Stormcaller," so perhaps not. If that disappointed her slightly, well, she would never mention such a silly fancy to Diell themself. Professor Yew was a professional and it was her job to set trainers at ease, not judge them based on such superficial factors. "You're here to pick up a starter Pokemon?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Diell had been sitting in a chair quietly, his eyes closed. But at the professor's words, he opened his eyes and smiled brightly at her. "That'd be me, ma'am." He said politely as he stood and stepped over to her. His hair was wild and uncontrolled, as if he didn't care or didn't know how to take care of it. Likely a bit of both.
"It's wonderful to meet you. Professor Victoria Yew, correct?" He'd done his research. listened. Paid attention. At his greeting he gave her a bright smile that reached from ear to ear. He had no reason to bluff her, had no reason to lie. He was here to get a pokemon, and that in itself was enough to bring out some of his childishness, some of the childishness in all young adults who were getting to go on their first adventures.
Regardless, the man was excited. And curious to see what fate would bring to him today. What pokemon he'd get to choose from. Who his new friend would be.

Professor Yew "Yes, that's me." Professor Yew smiled at Diell, a little impressed that he'd done his research. "I'm glad to meet you as well. Now, if you'll just follow me, let's see what we have for you today."The professor turned and started down the corridor she'd come through, assuming that Diell would follow her. She'd lead him to a plain white room with two chairs and a Pokeball-holding device on the wall: six Pokeballs in carefully-cushioned cups, with a screen next to the receptacle. The screen was currently blank, waiting to be activated -- waiting to show them what Pokemon awaited Diell's choice. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Of course." He followed easily, a lazy smile on his face. What would he get? What would his choices be? Who would he even choose? It'd be an important decision, but he doubted it'd be incredibly difficult. He wasn't indecisive or anything, simply curious. Although he didn't know much about the pokemon yet. He'd learn, he was sure.
After all, it was a little like learning anything else. Just takes time, practice, and an insatiable appetite for knowledge. Regardless, he sat down in whichever chair he was directed to and relaxed. Sat back, seemed perfectly at ease and comfortable. Simply waited for the next instructions from the professor. She seemed nice at least. And would definitely know more than he did on the subject of pokemon. Maybe he'd have to ask her a few questions after this.

Professor Yew "One of these six Pokemon will be your new partner," the professor explained, gesturing to the Pokeballs as she sat in the other chair, the one closer to the screen. "I haven't actually looked at what your options are yet, so ... let's see."She activated the screen and started to tap through images of the Pokemon in the Pokeballs, the cup under each Pokeball lighting up as its inhabitant appeared onscreen. "Hmm ... Paras, Seviper, Sigilyph, Carbink, Pidgey, and Magnemite. Interesting!"Not all Pokemon she would have chosen for a new trainer -- there were some good options in there, but also some she'd consider strange choices -- but she'd wait to comment until she saw what Diell thought of them. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? | | | | | | Paras | Seviper | Sigilyph | Carbink | Pidgey | Magnemite | male | male | female | genderless | male | genderless |

He looked at their images, and listened to her words. She heard him say each name quietly to himself, trying to figure out things about them. Paras looks like an Insect. Mushrooms too. Interesting, might want to see what it can do. That's a fucking snek. Looks fast, maybe venomous? Dangerous if only by looks, but that's all people have to go on right now. Sigilyph... is strange. Strange but interesting. I wonder what's going on with her. She'd definitely at least be an unexpected choice. Carbink is adorable, rocky, but doesn't look like it ever gets particularly powerful. And also how does it walk. Does it bounce? does it float? Actually same with Sigilyph, what the fuck do they do? That one definitely has to float it has weird wing things. The pidgey looks relatively harmless... actually I might've seen one on my way here. It looks familiar. Doesn't seem powerful, kinda cute, would be good for scouting definitely at the very least. Keeping an eye out. That last one looks like a magnet. Kinda cute and definitely interesting. Maybe it's a... what's that called, electric type? Definitely. Maybe something else too.
"Would you mind telling me a bit more about them? I don't have much experience with pokemon, so I don't know much about them." He asked, looking over to Yew. When he'd begun his thinking, he sat up straighter, and his eyes were darting over the choices rapidly. Almost too rapidly to follow. and those eyes darted to Yew, but then stilled politely to await what she had to say.

Professor Yew The professor nodded. "Of course. That's what I'm here for. Let's see ..."She lifted the tablet that hung on her hip and pulled up her Pokedex to make sure she wouldn't miss anything. "Paras is a Grass-Bug type. It's not particularly powerful, though it does evolve once, and the only move it'll know at level 1 is Scratch, though it does get Sleep Powder at level 2. Interesting ... The mushrooms on its back are parasitic, and as it evolves, they come to control the bug part of the Pokemon.
"Seviper, a Poison type, is known for its rivalry with Zangoose. It's quite strong, especially for a low-level Pokemon, but it won't evolve. It might be a bit dangerous for a new trainer, too -- its venom is rather deadly.
"Sigilyph is an odd Pokemon -- Flying and Psychic type. Like Seviper, it'll be powerful from the beginning but won't evolve. I don't think it's as dangerous as Seviper, though. Its level 1 moveset is quite good, actually, Confusion and Gust. They're known for guarding ancient cities.
"Carbink is another one-stage Pokemon, Rock and Fairy type. Its Defense is, wow, off the charts, and its other stats aren't bad either. They come into being deep underground and are sometimes found in caves.
"Pidgey is a very common Flying- and Normal-type Pokemon -- but just because it's common doesn't mean it's not effective in battle. It evolves twice. They're docile and easy to handle, but can pack a punch -- though the only move it'll know at level 1 is Tackle.
"Magnemite also evolves twice; it's an Electric and Steel type. Its Attack and Defense are quite good, but its HP is very low, and its Speed isn't high either. But it does know Thunder Shock at level 1, which is nice. They can be a bit unpredictable, and they feed on electricity."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Diell listened carefully to every word she said. So I was right on some of this. Paras is kinda interesting, but I don't think it'd fit. Seviper was venomous, I was right, nice. Dangerous for a new trainer wouldn't be too much of a problem normally, but I doubt that'd be a good thing today. Sigilyph is less dangerous, but pretty powerful, good moves supposedly. I rather like the guarding aspect. Carbink might be good if I want to go for a defensive strategy in particular but I don't really feel like that's appropriate either. Pidgey, flying normal? Common, not bad in battle, but weak right now. Although I expected that coming into this. But if it's common, I can always find another. Magnemite is tempting, two evolutions so it'll get stronger, and get new moves. But they're also unpredictable, which means if I don't learn them fast that can be a problem.
"Thank you, that was very informative." he said simply after a second of thinking. Then he smiled a bit more. "I believe I know which pokemon I'd like to have as a partner." He seemed confident in his choice. "I believe I'd like to take the Sigilyph, if that isn't too much of a problem?" He asked, but asked without a doubt in his mind seemingly. She'd make a good partner, he thought.

Professor Yew "Of course." The professor nodded, taking the appropriate Pokeball from its receptacle and handing it to Diell. It was definitely an interesting choice, not the Pokemon that she would have gone for as a beginning trainer -- but she liked to see people choose Pokemon that they liked instead of just seeking glory in battle. If Sigilyph spoke to Diell, that was plenty of reason for him to choose it. "Do you want to let her out here, or try to get to know her somewhere else? Oh, and you'll need this as well." The professor took a business card from her pocket and handed it to Diell. "My number is on there -- feel free to call or text me if you need any help. And it also has instructions for downloading the Pokedex app, which can tell you about any Pokemon you encounter."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? "Would it be ok to let her out here just in case things go wrong?" He asked, holding the ball in one hand confidently and the card in the other. "And just to get a good feel for size. I don't want to accidentally let her out and she be too big for the room, or so small I almost lose her in the grass." Diell was pocketing the card for later. Add Professor Yew to his contacts, then download that app. Easily enough done.
Although most of his attention was on his pokemon. What would he name her? What would she be like? Would he be able to handle her? Probably, hopefully, maybe, mayhaps.

Professor Yew "Yes, of course," the professor said. "That's what this room is for. Feel free to let her out whenever you're comfortable."Especially with a Flying Pokemon, it probably was best if Diell introduced himself in an enclosed space. It would be unfortunate if he opened that Pokeball and the Sigilyph simply floated off without paying him any mind. "I have yet to see a Pokemon be aggressive on coming out of its Pokeball," the professor added, "but on the off chance this is the first time, my Absol can subdue her if necessary."She put a hand on Absol's Pokeball at her belt. Absol's Dark type would be particularly effective against Psychic Sigilyph, too. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

The man looked at his ball for a moment and took in a deep breath. It would be safe, she had a pokemon who could deal with any issues. And she was the expert here. He nodded in acknowledgement of her words, then pressed the button on the pokeball to let her out.
The Sigilyph's shape formed from the light quickly. She was bigger than he'd expected. Not as tall as him or Yew, but tall. She shook herself out. Looked at both of the individuals in the room. "Sigi? Lyph! Sigilyph!" She began vocalizing and swaying in place. He now saw how she was floating.
And while she didn't seem immediately hostile, she was definitely... wary, tense, and very much ready to attack at the drop of a dime. She was certainly even more strange looking in person. But he didn't regret his choice, definitely. Seeing her made him a bit more confident in it, in fact.

Professor Yew "Hello, Sigilyph," the professor said, her voice calm and soothing. Even considering Sigilyph's strange appearance, it wasn't hard to pick up on the tension in her voice. But she turned to Diell next, while keeping one eye on the waiting Pokemon. "Try talking to her."After all, the professor didn't want to take the lead in meeting someone else's partner. It was up to Diell to win Sigilyph's trust, and it would be a good idea to start now. "Nice and easy," the professor added. "Why don't you introduce yourself?"Pokemon were quite clever, after all, and could usually get the gist of what people were saying, even if they didn't understand entirely. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Sigilyph floated back and forth in place, watching the professor. She was the one who'd spoken first. But Diell nodded quietly. "Hey there girl. It's ok, you're safe." He soothed in a gentle voice. A smile on his face calmly. The pokemon immediately turned to look at him, and her attention was immediately his.
"My name is Diell." he continued. She floated a bit closer to examine him, craning the appendage on the top with her third eye to look at the man. He seemed completely fearless despite the possible aggression.
"Must've been pretty lonely in that ball all those years. But it's ok. See, you're out now, so you and I can do a bit of travelling together, how about that. You can see everything you've missed while you were napping." He smiled at her. It was hard to tell if she was convinced at first, as she swayed back and forth.
"Siiigi. Lyph." She sounded less tense, but still wary. Inquisitive maybe.
"What do you say Sigilyph? You wanna check up on the world? I'm sure you're probably worried. How about I help you out. You're a guardian right? I'm sure you wanna go make sure everything's ok."
She seemed to be calming a bit as she listened to this individual. He may not tear the sky asunder... but he did have a way with words.

Professor Yew The professor watched Diell introduce himself to the Sigilyph, relaxing as the Pokemon's wariness seemed to ease somewhat. Yew especially smiled when Diell referred to Sigilyph's supposed nature as a protector -- it was good to see someone using their knowledge of Pokemon to appeal to a Pokemon ... Even if it was knowledge she'd given him immediately before. Hey, that made him a quick learner, too. "It's good to meet you, Sigilyph," the professor said, deciding to follow Diell's lead. After all, the Pokemon didn't seem totally relaxed yet. "My name is Professor Yew. Diell here intends to be your new trainer -- is that all right with you?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?
