time: midday weather: clear characters: Rebecca Cardinal , Sprye Nivôsebattle mechanics: none ❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca crept through the underbrush, Galla pattering along at her heels. She wasn't sure how well she'd impressed the need to be quiet on her Pokemon, but she herself was doing her level best not to disturb any wild Pokemon around her -- because she was absolutely determined that this time she would find a bird. Her previous hunts had been fine, but she hadn't come away from them with a single new bird Pokemon ... Oh! There! Rebecca saw a Starly resting in the grass near the path. Instantly, she focused completely on the bird, stepping out of the brush and tossing a Pokeball -- without a single glance at the Starly's trainer. Oops. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Sprye is also sitting by the side of the road, though he's letting his pokemon roam around for a bit, so long as they don't go too far and get themselves in trouble. They're being good though - Everyone is a little tired from traveling.
Even Sprye has clearly seen tidier days. He's carefully trying to style his hair back up into something acceptable. It's frustrating, not having anything like this - but it's also sort of exciting too. It can be inconvenient and also novel and interesting. Trying to use the mirror shine of a Pokeball is not working at all. The red is too dark and the ball is too round to look like anything much. He didn't pack any things for vanity, in his preparation for the road. That's the kind of thing that goes in suitcases - so he didn't think of it.
He's settled on shaking out his curls and just doing his best at piling up the fluffiness, for now. So long as it's not full of twigs or something... Adventure!
Audino is nearby, studying the different flowers that grow at the side of the road. Thin little weeds, but in all sorts of colors and shapes. Bunnelby is staying near Sprye. Sprye seems to worry from to time, and worrying about being fluffy is something relatable at least. Other times Sprye is less predictable about what he seems concerned about.
Sprye's Starly was nearby just off the road, sitting in the Audino's colorful weeds. When the ball comes out of the grass, the Starly squawks in surprise, flapping in a panic.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal The ball missed, clearly frightening the Starly, and Rebecca cursed herself for starting off with what would come off as an attack instead of trying to approach the Starly in a more soothing manner. She stepped out of the bushes, calling, "No, it's OK, I just want to be friends! I'm sorry for startling you!"Focused on the Starly, Rebecca barely even noticed the trainer sitting next to the road until she almost tripped over him. Managing to catch herself, she paused for a second, but only a second. "Sorry! I really want to catch that Starly!"And then she was after the bird again. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The Starly hop-flaps away from her and doesn't seem scared, keeping its distance.
"Oh--" Sprye is too startled to respond right away. "That--" Are trainers allowed to do that? Well, anything could be thieved, but she doesn't look or sound like a thief. He sits up not quite alarmed yet. "--Hey, uh, that one's mine," he offers once he has a chance to see what she's up to properly.
Audino toddles up slowly next to Sprye to observe. That catching's not allowed... Not uninteresting to watch... Bunnelby is considering jumping for cover in the grass but hasn't quite decided to do so yet, startled.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca almost, almost ignored the other trainer's words, so focused was she on the Starly. By the time they filtered through to her, she actually had another Pokeball in her hand and was ready to throw. Galla tugged on her sock, and Rebecca almost overbalanced as she registered what the stranger had said. "Yours?" she said, not totally comprehending at first. Then understanding dawned with a rush of horror. Quickly, she shoved the Pokeball into her pocket. "Oh! I'm so sorry!"She turned away from the Starly, towards the other trainer. From the heat she could feel in her cheeks, Rebecca knew she was blushing furiously. "I'm sorry -- I didn't realize ..."no one can stop me from spreading my wings

"No, no -- That's okay," Sprye says. Ah, she's blushing! "Don't worry!" He's not sure what to say or how to reassure her best. "Um, I'm Sprye," he offers, sticking out his hand.
Audino is fascinated by the girl turning red. He's content to watch this. They haven't come across many people on the road, at least, ones that stopped nearby. They would look, but then they would keep going. It wasn't that much fun, humans just passing each other without interacting much.
The Starly, since it's no longer being chased, hops back over without a care. The Bunnelby is still trying to decide what to do.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca was grateful for Sprye's reassurance, but she still felt terrible. She'd tried to steal a Pokemon! Wasn't that, like, a major crime? Oh, Arceus, what if she wasn't allowed to be a trainer anymore? (Wait, allowed by who? It wasn't like she had a license that could be taken away.) "I'm Rebecca," she said, shaking Sprye's hand, a little awkwardly. She looked around at Audino, Starly, and Bunnelby. "Are these all your Pokemon?"She was impressed. Oh, she had three Pokemon too, but she hadn't really spent much time with Sobble and Foongus outside their balls. After all, she wasn't that interested in raising non-bird Pokemon. It seemed cruel to catch them and just keep them in Pokeballs, so she had let them out to run around and hang out a few times, but they didn't seem much friendlier to her than she was to them -- perhaps they could sense her indifference. Rebecca was thinking of releasing them, actually, or ... "Um, this might be a little forward," she said, still blushing furiously, "but would you be interested in trading your Starly for one of my Pokemon?"no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Sprye cocks his head. "Hm! Well, it's good that you really want it. He'd probably do better with you if he wants to go. I feel like... maybe we should give him a choice or something. But it's okay with me if he likes you. It'll save you having to catch one!" He doesn't see why they can't trade, unless there's some mandate about it. It's kind of a strange idea, but he's sure it's in his bookie anyway - at the very least there's no note saying that he can't or shouldn't do it. She seems more excited than normal to have the Starly. Sprye is happy to raise anything. So this makes sense, he thinks.
Bunnelby hops over finally, curious. Audino happily waves at the girl and is missing all of the conversation. Discussions are too quick and not that filled with meaning, feelings, that makes any sense to him. The Starly is mostly looking at Rebecca, in between keeping an eye on their surroundings.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca nodded. That made perfect sense to her; Starly should have some say in such an important decision about his own future. "Should I talk to him a little, then? Ask him if he wants to come with us?"Without waiting for an answer, she turned to Starly. "Hello! I'm sorry for startling you. It's just that you're a beautiful Pokemon, and I really wanted you to join us on our journey. My enthusiasm got the better of me -- that happens a lot, I'm afraid."Meanwhile, Galla approached the Starly, head tilted. So she was getting a chance to evaluate a new potential friend ... "Chi?" she asked. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Sprye sits back on his hands and watches. The Starly cocks its head this way and that. It doesn't understand a word of all that but gathers it's something of an apology. Friendly. Starly fluffs all his feathers up after a moment and decides to play hard to get, intrigued by the girl - but let's not get hasty. It tosses its head one way and the other, haughtily, and ruffles its wings purposefully, wiggling a little.
"Come on, Starly." Sprye says, but it's with a laugh. "She just really likes you."
Ah, Sprye's laughing. He's put on too much of a show. He side-eyes her, still curious.
"He's independent," he smiles. "It's kind of fun, really. He doesn't hold a grudge. I think he just wants to think for himself. I think people like that can be really loyal, once they trust you. 'Cause they come to that decision on their own, you know?"

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca nodded, sitting down to get on Starly's level. "I think it's good to have Pokemon with a lot of personality," she said, glancing at Galla. The Torchic certainly let Rebecca know what she thought -- she'd been doing so even back when she was trapped in her Pokeball, shaking or growing warm as Rebecca spoke to her. "I wouldn't expect a Pokemon to just do as I say without any consideration for their own desires -- they're living things too, and they have opinions. Right, Galla.""Chi." Galla nodded. Then she moved towards Starly and poked at him a bit with her beak. Why was he being so haughty? Rebecca was nice! And he'd ignored Galla completely -- rude! no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Starly flaps, being poked! What's this? ...Well... "Star..." it grumbles, but relents, with a shake. "Starly-li," it says to the Galla, somewhat conversationally, straightening itself out. The Bunnelby cautiously hops over to join the conversation. Maybe Star might need some backing up. Starly's not so bad, really. The Audino just watches them from his place next to Sprye.
Sprye considers the little group for a while. They don't talk exclusively, there's a lot of physical movement as well. More than people do. We must be hard to understand. "--Hey, do you think Pokemon are people?" he asks. He's managed to ask a few people this now, so the question comes out more easily and less self-consciously. He looks back to Rebecca, curiously.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Pleased to have gotten Starly's attention, Galla sat back a little. "Chi chic," she said, also conversationally. See? This wasn't so bad. They could just have a nice chat and maybe then Starly would come with them. He didn't have to be rude about it, even if he didn't want to. Galla turned to Bunnelby as well with a polite, "Chi." She was on her best behavior, determined to impress Starly. Meanwhile, Sprye's question made Rebecca's brow furrow. "Hmm ... that's a good question. I guess it depends on how you define a 'person.' I mean, Pokemon definitely aren't human, but if you define a 'person' as like, a creature with its own thoughts and feelings, its own consciousness, then I think they probably are? But it seems weird to say they're people and then keep them in balls."no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Sprye thinks about this answer. What's a person? He doesn't think he can define it, either... "Well. They're not independent... At least, they don't really seem to want to be. They can survive on their own I guess but they seem to like being with us. It's really been nice, walking like this. I never thought I was lonely before, you know? Maybe they're people enough to feel the same way. If I was in the wild, maybe I wouldn't mind being kept captive and _safe_. They seem to relax."
Starly cocks its head and seems to ease up. "Liii..." It coos, with a flap. Perhaps he can rethink the meeting.
Sprye gets self-conscious. "I guess I'm still so surprised to see them."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca nodded. "That makes sense. I mean, humans can survive on our own, technically, but we like to be with Pokemon -- so the feeling is kind of mutual, that it's better to be together than apart. And, I mean, look at the last 90 years. Things have been hard ... I think we need Pokemon more than we really know."Which meant that things should take a turn for the better now that they were back. Rebecca smiled at the thought. Meanwhile, Galla settled down with Starly and Bunnelby with a politely inquiring "Chi?" How was everyone's day? Another nod from Rebecca, and another smile. "It feels so strange sometimes that they're actually here after so long. Sometimes I wake up and I'm afraid I've imagined the whole thing."no one can stop me from spreading my wings
