Welcome to the Deprin Region! (Click for a larger view) A place of high mountains, rolling hills, and green lowlands. It had been 86 years since the last confirmed Pokemon sighting in the Deprin Region -- until spring 2020. Then, Pokemon started to return, just as mysteriously as they had vanished. The Pokemon's almost 90-year disappearance wrought many changes in Deprin's society, as the region was devastated by environmental collapse. Now that they've returned, Deprin faces another period of upheaval and danger. Are they back to stay, or will they vanish again? Why did they disappear in the first place, and why reappear now? As the region struggles to adjust to once again becoming a world without Pokemon, it will need new leaders -- new trainers. Trainers like you.

Food Food tends to be very scarce in the Drepin region, due to the disappearance of Pokemon that acted as pollinators for crops. Shortages are not uncommon, and many people go hungry at least part of the time. A great deal of Deprin's food is algae-based and most towns and settlements rely on a number of algae vats for sustenance. In smaller settlements, many families cultivate their own algae in small home vats, though they typically still need to take their home-grown algae to a central plant to be processed into edible food. Fungi are also a common source of nourishment, as they can be grown in basements and cellars. Actual plant-based foods tend to be lab-grown and expensive, especially fruits and vegetables.
Killing and eating Pokemon is extremely taboo in Drepin, considered almost as severe as human cannibalism. Foods that can be harvested from Pokemon without killing them, such as the fruits of Grass-type Pokemon, are considered OK as long as they're harvested ethically. However, with Pokemon so newly returned, these foods remain very rare and expensive.
Technology The technology of the Deprin Region matches, and in some ways exceeds, that found in the real world. However, the region's resource crunch has made certain technologies scarce. Specifically, a shortage of gasoline means that cars and trucks are very rare, and typically only used for long journeys outside cities. The average resident of the region either walks or bikes everywhere, and roads in many towns aren't even built for cars. (Residents who cannot walk or bike for physical reasons may have motorized wheelchairs or scooter-type vehicles.) Likewise, air travel is almost unheard of due to a lack of appropriate fuel.
While Deprin does have advanced telecommunications, it does not have an Internet or social media as we know them -- communications are generally one-on-one or small-group between users' devices. Still, most people do have phones, though they may struggle to find somewhere with electricity to charge them. In addition to the capacity for both individual and group calls and texts, phones contain Pokedexes and region maps; thus, they can be used to look up information on Pokemon and geography. Characters can also connect to news stations to get news on their phones, and the Pokemon Laboratory hosts a notice board that trainers can use to broadcast messages to all other trainers. However, there is no Google in Deprin; characters can't just search any piece of information they wish.
