Arris sighed softly as he looked at the Pokeball in his hand, standing before the Mistveil Pokemon Laboratory. Sass the Yungoos lay dormant inside. He... felt bad. Sass was a good Pokemon. She had a lot of potential. But she just... wasn't thriving under Arris' training. After the battle they'd been in when he caught her - which seemed so promising, she'd had such spunk and vigor - the little normal type had just seemed to fizzle out. Like the life and joy had just gone completely complacent. It had almost been like the Yungoos had expected Arris and his team to prey upon her in some way - and while through persistent work and showing careful affection and confirmation he'd gotten her to stop quite acting like the end was near and coming for her, he just could never seem to get Sass' confidence back up to where it needed to be.
And so, here he was; at the Pokemon Laboratory. He'd figured perhaps Professor Yew would know what to do. Afterall, she'd helped him with getting through that patch of fear with Belle... perhaps she'd be able to do some help here, as well. It was worth a shot at least. He looked down at his side where Belle was - sweet Belle who'd be with him to the end, who was looking up at her trainer with such worry in her little eyes. "Ready, sweetheart?" She nodded understandingly.
Arris walked into the Pokemon Center, Belle trailing at his foot, and made eyes for the receptionist. "Um... hello there," he said gently as he approached. "I need to make an appointment to see Professor Yew? I have some health concerns about a Pokemon of mine."

Professor Yew "She's expecting you," the receptionist said. "Go right on in -- take a left at the end of the hall."Within her office, the professor glanced over reports, stroking the back of her Spinarak, who sat on her desk -- taking a well-earned break from weaving the large web that covered most of the ceiling and the right wall of the professor's office. Some of the professor's colleagues found the web unsettling; Yew considered it a marvel of nature. Absol napped next to the professor's desk, paws twitching every so often, while Oddish hummed to herself in her planter. The professor and her Pokemon were content and relaxed as they waited for Arris to arrive. // Team: level 10 Absol, level 10 Oddish, level 5 Spinarakhow can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Ah, okay! Thank you very much." Arris did a short bow of thanks to the receptionist before following their instructions. Down the hall... on the left, right? Right, left? He was so antsy. Sass' Pokeball felt like a steel ball of weight in his pocket. Belle nudged his legs from behind guiding him down the hall until he saw the correct door. "Ah," he said softly.
He scooped up Belle into an arm - more to comfort his own rising anxiety than anything else, which as the Bounsweet snuggled into his side, she seemed to pick up on - and rapped his knuckles gently against the door before pushing it open. His eyes widened slightly at the look of all the different Pokemon in the room - it made sense that a Professor would have a full team! It was just... really cool to see in a smaller space. "Ah, hello Professor, it's been a while," Arris said.
He took a look at the extensive web, before his eyes wandered over to Yew and alit on Spinarak. "Oh, wow," he said. "Quite the work of art. And this has all just been from the one? That's impressive." He approached to sit in the chair across from the desk, perching Belle on his leg and pulling out Sass' Pokeball with the other, rolling it in his fingers.
"Anyway... um. So I'm here today," he paused. It was hard for him to admit it. At a gentle nudge from Belle, he sighed. "I... have a Pokemon that I don't think I can take care of. I've been trying, but... it just seems she's been struggling, no matter what I try. I'm at a bit of a loss."

Professor Yew "It's good to see you, Arris," the professor said, setting aside her reports. She smiled at Arris' response to Spinarak's web, as Spinarak wiggled happily. Finally, another connoisseur at the Lab! It was shocking, really, how few people here had any appreciation for Spinarak's art. "Thank you. Spinarak works very hard on her web."As Arris continued, the professor came to frown a little. "She's struggling? How do you mean? Are you two just not getting along, or do you have health concerns?"Seeing how worried and nervous Arris was, the professor added, "I'm sure we can help, whatever it is. The Lab is at your disposal, as am I -- we want to make sure your Pokemon is well. What kind of Pokemon is she?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"It's nice to see you too," Arris nodded with a quiet smile. From his leg, Belle waved her leaves and wiggled side to side, mimicking Spinarak's own pleased wiggle. Happy friends! Pretty art friends with an impressive display, too! A moment later, though, Belle nudged her stem against Arris' stomach, prompting the man to hold up Sass' Pokeball into view as he spoke.
"Um... a little of both, I guess? Oh - she's a Yungoos. Fairly young. As far as I can tell, she's physically healthy, but..." he pursed his lips and looked to the Pokeball with concern. "When we first battled her - when she was caught - there was so much energy. Like a little spitfire. But after Belle defeated her and she was captured, it's like all the fight just went out completely. Almost like blowing out a candle."
He rested his free hand on Belle's head, stroking along her leaves gently and affectionately. The Bounsweet crooned softly at her trainer in return. "I couldn't get her to eat for a few days, nor do anything but just lay about limply as if she'd just given up. I eventually got some energy back in her and she's eating relatively fine now, but her energy levels and spirit never improved." He frowned as he set the Pokeball on the desk in front of him to stare at it with disturbed eyes. "I think she's scared of me? Or thinks I'm going to hurt or predate her or something. Which... I would never, never do. But it means I'm at an impasse - obviously I'm not the kind of trainer or care that she needs, and I worry about her health staying where it is or deteriorating further."

Professor Yew Delighted by Belle's response, Spinarak lifted two legs and waved them at the Bounsweet, in imitation of Belle's own waving leaves. They were communicating! Enjoying each other's company! Maybe even having a little dance party while their trainers chatted? Meanwhile, as the professor listened to Arris' worries, she frowned in concern. "I can definitely see why you're worried, and I'm glad you came in. Hmm ... my Oddish had a similar reaction when I first caught her -- she was afraid of myself and Absol, as we had essentially attacked her without warning. We were able to overcome her anxiety with time" -- Oddish's current state, humming happily in her planter, made that clear; she looked up briefly when the professor said her name -- "but I'd imagine there's a further problem here, if Yungoos still seems upset."Yew considered the matter for a moment. "I would almost suggest that being captured was traumatic for her, but ... a Pokemon has to willingly submit to a Pokeball for the capture to succeed, so on some level she is willing to be here. Even if life with a trainer isn't suiting her, I would hesitate to suggest releasing her -- if she's refused food before, I'd worry that she wouldn't be able to survive in the wild."She needed more information, really. "Could you let her out so I could meet her? We could move to a starter selection room, if you think that's best" -- if you think she'll destroy my office, the professor really meant -- "or you can let her out here. You can probably guess better than I can whether the presence of other Pokemon would soothe or upset her."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

A dance you say!? Certainly. If dancing was involved that meant Belle was involved. With a last gentle thump to Arris' stomach of encouragement, Belle hopped off of his lap to meander closer to where Spinarak was so that she could keep chatting (and wiggling and dancing!) with the lovely lovely arachnid.
Moving his arm so Belle could escape, Arris listened to the professor with entire seriousness. He nodded with a faint hum of understanding, but he had to think about that too. It was one thing to attack the other pokemon first, yeah... and it could definitely be a problem. He could totally see that - but in Sass' case... she'd been the one to attack first, if he remembered. He said as much, too: "Sass was the aggressor in that fight, but Belle did turn it around on her... I hope that that's not the case; I would hate to have inflicted anxiety upon her."
Arris nodded again as the professor continued, too. That... was reassuring at least; that she did willingly submit or she wouldn't be here at all. But it did seem as if the capture had resulted in trauma of some kind, maybe... and Arris hoped not, but if that was the case, that was why he'd decided to come to the experts. "Right... I worried about that too; I'd considered bringing her back to where we caught her for release but I had worries about the same thing."
He stood up a moment later and moved so that there was room between himself and Yew's desk. "She should be fine. I don't foresee her being aggressive. I... don't know how she'll tolerate other Pokemon but considering her behavior with the rest of my team I don't see it as a fear for a fight breaking out. Alright... Sass, come on out, please." Arris held his breath as he released the capture mechanism on the Pokeball.
Upon materializing, the Yungoos did snarl and look around as if ready for a fight - but upon realizing ah, the human was there, she settled. She looked around anxiously at the other Pokemon in the room, still tensed up... but upon seeing Belle the normal-type froze. Oh no. It was that damnedable berry. The one that made Sass not an apex predator but a little thing with no pride. She looked around at the other Pokemon. So many. Was this it, then? The end of the road for the Yungoos? Beaten by a berry and now finally taken to be eaten? Without much preamble afterwards she flattened herself on the floor and lay quietly, as if prepared for the end and doom and gloom and all things bad.
Arris frowned. "That's... usually how it goes. C'mon Sass, up you go... we're just here to help, yeah? You're alright..." He carefully reached down to scoop the Yungoos up - who did not protest at all, completely limp in the trainer's arms - holding her so she was in view of the Professor. "Usually if left alone or cajoled she'll get up and moving a bit, but... she's like this even when Belle isn't here either."

Professor Yew As Belle found her way off Arris' lap, Spinarak moved to the edge of the professor's desk and and rappelled to the floor on a line of web, twirling gracefully on her descent. Yes, they could definitely hang out while their trainers deliberated! "Hm, if she was the aggressor in the initial fight, then you certainly didn't scare her by attacking her ..." The professor watched Sass closely as the Yungoos emerged, standing up so that she could see over her desk. Belligerent at first, settling when she saw Arris ... and she seemed to freeze when her eyes landed on Belle. That could be significant. Then Yew considered Sass as Arris held her out. "Hm, she seems almost more depressed than anxious -- I wouldn't describe her current behavior as tense or avoidant, just ... listless. She acts like this even when Belle isn't around? She did seem to react to Belle, going still at the sight of her."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Right," Arris nodded at Professor Yew's observation. "In fact, she was pretty intent on eating Belle at first, I think..." At least, from his memory it had seemed that way - until the battle turned in Belle's speedy favor. But that had certainly been the change in mood, too.
He pet the Yungoos on the head gently as he held her, though she didn't give much of a reaction save to rest her chin on his arm and huff out a reluctant little sigh, as if tolerating the boy's touch, rather than really enjoying it. "Listless and depressed certainly aren't good, no..." He frowned, before nodding. "Yeah - I'd wondered if it was because of the battle's outcome and a like... rivalry thing or something, too. But she's been like this since we caught her. Not... as bad, without Belle, I'll admit," Arris lowered his gaze, "But not much of an improvement, either."

Professor Yew "Hmm ..." The professor watched the Yungoos react to Arris. Was Sass afraid of him? "She expected to eat Belle and was instead defeated and captured ... That must have been quite a shock to her. Maybe it's still affecting her."Sighing, Professor Yew rested her chin on her hand. "Well, we can speculate all day about how she's feeling, but at some point we have to come up with a solution, too. If she beat Belle in battle, she might feel better ... but if she's intelligent enough to recognize Belle throwing a match, it might simply make things worse. Alternately ... would you be open to trading her? If she's having trouble with you and Belle, she might do better in a different environment."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Arris nodded, adjusting Sass in his arms so she’d hopefully be a little more comfortable. “Yeah… I mean, if it was me I know I’d be a little sore. If she was a bigger predator maybe it wouldn’t be an issue - or if it wasn’t Belle. But she’s pretty young. Maybe she took it harder…?” Or maybe that was just wishful thinking on Arris’ end.
He looked up at the mention of a trade. His brows raised, but he did mull it over a bit as he listened. “You’re right, yeah. And I do think that she’s smart enough that she’d realize something wasn’t right about a thrown match,” Arris agreed. Plus he wasn’t sure Belle knew the meaning of not putting all her energy into everything that she did, even if told not to. “But… trying out a different environment… maybe that would be best. A new place to explore and grow and thrive. I wouldn’t be opposed to it, especially since it’s for her health. Do you have something in mind?” If it meant Sass was happier and healthier that meant Arris would be happy too. He’d do his best for another teammate, of course! And love them all the same.

Professor Yew The professor nodded. "She's quite young -- if losing to Belle was one of her first battles, well, I can see how she'd take it to heart."Another nod, and the professor opened her desk's top drawer, taking out two Pokeballs and setting them on the desk. "I have a couple Pokemon I've caught who just aren't getting much space to shine here at the Lab. Nothing as severe as Sass's condition, but we just haven't clicked well. This one is a Heracross, and this one is a Nidoran female. Would you be interested in either of them? If you'd like to meet them first, I absolutely understand."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Exactly," Arris offered a faint smile, "so a different environment free of stress might do the lil one some good."
He tilts his head curiously at the two Pokeballs, before glancing back up at Professor Yew. Pokemon who haven't gotten to shine, huh? Well, Arris was certainly more than willing to give it a shot! Heracross and Nidoran... "I can't say I'm familiar with either species," he said. "If it isn't a problem, I'd be certainly willing to meet either - but if you would rather not bring them out right here, I'm okay with just hearing about them too, if you could tell me a bit about both, please?" He paused for a moment. "Actually - you telling me a bit about them might work better, if only for Sass' current stress. Though I suppose I could return her to her ball for now, too..."

Professor Yew "Or perhaps different kinds of stress," the professor mused, thinking of how battling other Pokemon who weren't Belle might boost Sass's confidence. As long as the match-ups were equal and the opposing Pokemon weren't actually throwing the match ... "If you'd like to return Sass to her ball, that might be a good idea," the professor said. "She doesn't seem to be particularly enjoying this conversation ... I can tell you about the two Pokemon too, though. Heracross is a Bug-type, but it's quite large and strong. They're known for enjoying sweets -- tree sap and honey -- but in my experience, this individual is more interested in training than in eating. Nidoran, on the other hand, is a fairly common Pokemon remarkable for the level of dimorphism between males and females. They're a Poison type, so you'd have to be careful -- the venom they release from their horns can be quite dangerous. But they're also known to be more peaceable Pokemon."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?
