morning / clear / Professor Victoria Yew & James Johnathan Ford / no battle mechanics Professor Yew "James Johnathan Ford?" The professor stepped out into the waiting room, wishing more than anything that this was a normal starter appointment, where she would give some eager new trainer their first Pokemon. But no, this was an appointment of a very different kind ... though there was still a Pokeball at the center of it. Looking across the few people in the waiting room, the professor tried to figure out which was James. Probably one of the more stressed or sad-looking individuals, she thought, considering that James' father had just disappeared into the wilds, leaving little more than a Pokeball behind. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

The sound of his name being called snapped James out of his own train of thought. The past couple of days were all too surreal to him. His dad missing, his brother giving him a chance to be on his own, and now receiving his very first Pokemon. And not just any Pokemon, but apparently the same one that was found with what was left of his missing fathers stuff. While the circumstances did weigh a bit heavy on him, he couldn't help but feel the excitement of a whole new adventure being opened to him. The kind of adventures he would dream of when reading all those books about great trainers from the past going on daring and treacherous journeys. But now he gets to live out his dream. That is, if he actually works up the courage to get up.
With a deep breath, James jumps from his chair and makes his way to the professor, hands in his pockets. He pays more mind to how he's walking and smiling than the few people in the waiting room as he wants to make a good first impression to the professor despite how nervous his feels on the inside. Walking up, he waves his hand, "Yup, that's me. Are you the professor?" James ask. While he was pretty sure she was the professor, it was better to be safe than sorry.

Professor Yew "Yes, I'm Professor Victoria Yew," the professor said. "Please come with me -- we'll use one of our starter-choosing rooms, as they're best suited to meeting new Pokemon. At least, I imagine you'll want to meet the Pokemon we found with your father's things? Did you know he had a Pokemon with him?"At least, the professor assumed that the Pokemon had belonged to James' father, since it seemed unlikely that an inhabited Pokeball would just appear in the forest. She led James back through the door she'd come by and down a hall to a medium-sized plain white room furnished only with two chairs and a device on the wall -- cups for six Pokeballs, and a screen to display information on the Pokemon within. There were no Pokeballs in it now; the professor had Rowlet's Pokeball in her pocket. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

James followed the professor, soaking in the layout of the hallway and the room with awe. Just being in the same room where other's get to meet their Pokemon for the first time made James a bit giddy. He almost forgotten the professors questions and quickly closes his mouth as soon as he noticed that it was practically hanging open. James clears his throat, "Uh, well no actually. He never mentioned about having a Pokemon of his own and my brother never told me either so I'm guessing he doesn't know.".
The thought never crossed his mind until the professor asked, 'Did he have a Pokemon we never knew about? Surly he would have told us? I mean, think of all of the awesome stories he would have shared during those camping trips. It would have been impossible for him to forget something as cool as that!'. James smile falters a bit while in thought, but quickly recovers as to give the professor his undivided attention.
James continued, "I just sort of assumed that it was just a random Pokeball that was found with his stuff. Speaking of," James smile grew wider, "what kind of Pokemon is it? As mysterious as something like this I can only imagine its got to be an incredibly rare Pokemon! Or is it crazy powerful? Super smart? Ultra fast?". At this point James couldn't contain his excitement and started spouting guesses one after another without taking a breath. He was practically jumping up and down like a kid hyped up on sweets.

Professor Yew "Hmm." The professor frowned; it seemed odd that neither James nor his brother had known about their father's Pokemon. "Well, he must have acquired it at some point. Pokeballs don't just appear out of thin air, after all."Since Pokeballs were man-made artifacts, it wasn't as if one could have just appeared in the forest. Perhaps James' father had picked up the Pokeball on his way in ... with his camping supplies, as it were. "Oh, right." The professor took the Pokeball out of her pocket and put it into the receptacle, then activated the screen. A picture of Rowlet popped up on the display. "It's a Rowlet! A Grass type; its final evolution is Grass/Ghost."She smiled at James' guesses, though she couldn't help but feel like her answer would be a disappointment: "They're on the rare side, but not incredibly so. While they can get quite powerful, this one is still just a baby. Rowlet's a pretty popular Pokemon for trainers just starting out."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

The round Pokemon filled James eyes as he tried to study every pixel coming across the display. Though, one detail did stick out to him. Green leaf's in the shape of what appears to be a bowtie of some kind. His mouth, once again opened in awe, slowly forms into a smirk, 'Looks like he has a bit of personality to him. Or she. Wait, which one is it?'. James turns to the professor with newfound questions and curiosities begin to fill his mind, "Hey, uh professor? Is it a male or a female? I kinda can't tell", he sheepishly asks.
Then, another tsunami of questions barrels through his mind and quickly follows up, "Wait, how do you take care of a Pokemon? How do you feed them? Is there a certain amount of time you can keep a Pokemon in a Pokeball? When do Pokemon have to go to the Pokemon Center?". James scratches his head and looks down from embarrassment, "Ah man, I should have read up on that before I got here. Or at least looked it up.". He slowly looks back up to the professor, "Uh... sorry for not knowing the basics of how to take care of a Pokemon. Could you at the very least tell me how to start?". While he knows that this is the professors job, he still feels bad for not taking the chance to prepare and at the very least make her job a bit easier instead of being a bother towards her.

Professor Yew "It's a male," the professor said. "Curiously enough, almost 90 percent of the Rowlets on record were male ..."Ah, right. The professor smiled at James, shaking her head. "You don't have to apologize. Most people don't know much about Pokemon care -- even those of us who have been training for a bit are kind of making it up as we go along, since we don't exactly have a ton of first-hand experience. So: while Pokemon can technically stay in Pokeballs as long as they need to -- they've been in there for over 80 years, after all -- it's good to let them out fairly often so that they don't get bored. I'd say at least twice a week for Pokemon you intend to bond with and once a week for others. It's not a bad idea to let them hang out with you whenever you're not really doing anything. They need to go to the Pokemon Center when they're sick or hurt -- after a battle, for example, although you can also buy Potions to heal them with. The Pokemon Center can also answer any care questions you have.
"As for food, that's a little more difficult because it varies from Pokemon to Pokemon. Since Rowlet is a Grass type, it actually gets a lot of its energy through photosynthesis, which means you need to make sure it gets plenty of sun and water. In the wild, it'll supplement its diet with Bug Pokemon, but for a domesticated one, it's probably best to just feed it high-protein meal bars."The professor reached into her pocket and offered James a card. "Here, this will help. It's got my contact info, but also instructions on how to download the Lab's Pokedex app, which can tell you a lot about any Pokemon you meet."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"Thank you." James replied as he carefully took the card from the professors hand. He gave it a quick scan before putting it in his pocket, then took out his phone and quickly had the Pokedex app downloading before continuing. "So, where would you recommend beginners like me to start off at and" with an internal smirk, "where would be the places you would defiantly want us to stay away from?" James asked with both confidence and a bit of excitement.
James eyes also lead back to the Pokeball, no his Pokeball, which was strange but exciting at the same time, and followed up asking the professor, "Is it ok to take him now?" with a bit of a quieter tone making a small gesture with his hand towards the Pokeball. Both his dream and reality where in conflict with his mind, making his unsure tone of voice more apparent.

Professor Yew The professor nodded. "Well, I've been sending a lot of beginners to the Salve Co. Construction Site in Drackinheim -- they're looking for trainers to help manage the wild Pokemon that have been an issue there. Drackinheim isn't usually the safest place, but the Salve Co. people there will make sure you don't get in too much trouble. That said, you'd probably have an easier time checking out some of the routes, or perhaps Broadmarsh. As for where to stay away from, you probably already know that Mt. Veerie, the Arrigan Desert, and deep in Gladegloom can be quite dangerous."Another nod, as the professor smiled at James' nervous enthusiasm. "Yes, feel free. And you can let him out if you'd like to meet him."Many trainers preferred that the professor be present for their first meeting with their partner Pokemon, and the professor herself thought that was a good idea -- just to make sure nothing went wrong. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?
