The Deprin Region is a dangerous place! It is possible for both characters and Pokemon to die in Pokemon Rapture. Don't panic! Death will never come out of the blue. All character and Pokemon deaths will be due either to the player's choice or because the character attempted a clearly dangerous action in a moderated thread and rolled poorly.
If your character dies, you will receive 100 EXP for your next character (or for another existing character of yours, at your choice). If your Pokemon dies, your character will receive EXP as determined by the Pokemon's level. The death of a level 1-5 Pokemon gives its trainer 10 EXP, while the deaths of higher-level Pokemon award EXP equal to 2 times the Pokemon's level (e.g., the death of a level 15 Pokemon awards 30 EXP).
Typically, deaths will not become possible until your character has whited out (all their Pokemon have fainted). However, some actions may be so risky as to bypass whiting out and lead straight to death.
In some cases, which Pokemon you have with you may affect what survival options are available, even if your Pokemon are still conscious. For example, a trainer with a flying Pokemon might be able to survive falling off a cliff by having their Pokemon catch them, when a trainer with only land-bound Pokemon might die.
