Another beautiful day in sunny South Deprin - and a perfect day to take a walk!
The sun is warm in the sky; not too hot, just warm enough, and blotted by the bare mist created in the churning of the waterfalls surrounding the capital city of Mistveil. Rolling green lazy hills stretch far into the distance, marred only by the pale browns of well-worn walking paths, the carved out lines of the rolling river, and in the horizon, the blue line of the ocean. People and pokemon both appear to be taking advantage of the wonderful weather. Trainers and their partners are walking along the path, wild pokemon are basking in the sun and floating at the water's edge, scattering when humans come near. The route is abundant, alive, and lush.
For many, it is a nice, lazy day. One good for picnics, or just sitting around reading -- or perhaps a nature hike. But for Yahib... this might just mark the beginnings of a mini adventure, and perhaps new friendships lie in wait just around the bend!

They hadn't been walking for very long, and had already made three pit-stops, with this being the fourth. Dragon, who had a habit of clinging to empty patches on Yahib's body, now insisted on walking independently, probably for the same reason Yahib had decided to take a walk today at all: They were both looking for something new.[break][break]
The little bug's interests lay in the plants at the side of the path. Now and again, Dragon would halt abruptly and spend some time examining a particularly unusual flower.[break][break]
And it's not like they had any problem with stopping to smell the flowers! There was a lot of scenery to enjoy and some distant, interesting-looking pokémon to watch. But Yahib was never very good at just admiring things from a distance.[break][break]
Today, more than usual, they were bursting with energy, and these regular breaks were putting their patience to the test.[break][break]
Yahib began to wander a little further, to give their restless legs something to do, walking backwards to keep an eye on Dragon.

Maybe it's the old adage of 'stopping to smell the flowers.' Maybe it's 'the early pidgey gets the wurmple.' Either way, it appears that the pit-stops -- and the choice to walk backwards -- were not for nothing! As Dragon settles down once again, whiskers snuffling over a little flower off the side of the road in the grass, there is a rustle from just a ways off. It would appear that the little bug has attracted some attention!
Yahib's current orientation gives them a perfect view of what occurs: A little bidoof, fresh from a swim in the river, pulls herself up onto the shoreline. She shakes herself off, water wicking off of her slicked fur, kicking her feet. Once she is suitably 'dry' enough, she begins to trot up into the grass, only to pause mid-step when she notices a patch of flowers nearby. This might not have been interesting in and of itself, but oh! There is a nincada investigating, and that makes it all worth the while! What could be so interesting about these flowers especially? She must know!
She approaches on her stubby legs, tripping about halfway through, though it doesn't stop her stride at all, until she is face to face with Dragon over the small flower bed. She snuffles at the blooms as well, before -- with a little wiggle of her rump and the stubby fluff that passes as a tail, she makes a little chirruping growly noise of greeting at Nincada! Hello, friend!

What a cute pokémon! They once made a mask that looked similar, though it seems the drawings they'd used as reference weren't very accurate. The real thing was much rounder![break][break] Dragon looked up sharply as rain abruptly splattered his body. The sky was relatively clear. It was only in casting about for an explanation that he found the culprit – a bundle of brown fluff. So engrossed in his flower had he been that he hadn't heard her approach![break][break] "caaada!" Dragon cooed, returning the greeting. A new friend? He worked his antennae over Bidoof's face, stretching as tall as he could to reach the thick curls on her head. A leg followed immediately, poking at the plush fur. So soft![break][break] Yahib fumbled their phone out of their pocket and opened the pokémon identifier app. From their vantage point, getting a good photo of the newcomer was easy. In short order, they had a bio on Nincada, and...[break][break] "Bidoof. Even your name is cute!"[break][break]

"Bi-bi-bidoof!" Bidoof seems quite pleased at the pleasantry of this new friend! Just a pair of pals enjoying a nice sniff of the flowers in the sunshine. How nice -- and oh, how incredibly ticklish!
The plump mouse pokemon makes a noise not unlike what one might imagine a giggle might sound like, if only a small beaver creature was capable of giggling like a child. She screws up her nose and wiggles in delight at the antennae whiskering over her face, staying still for only a moment at the leg reaching out and prodding at her fur.
What does get her to react, however, is the clearly not pokemon voice calling her name. Oh dear. A human! ...Maybe a human?
Freezing -- because humans, of course, are new and scary beings, she ceases reacting immediately, slowly turning her head just a little to see Yahib better. ...Maybe not a human. Hmm. Looks like a big pokemon, really, all those funny silly faces! Maybe a friend too?
Bidoof sits down where she stands, her little back feet kicking out from under her, relaxed, but curious. Staring up at Yahib, her head tilts nearly sideways looking up at them.
"Biiiiii-doof?"
OOC: Bidoof is loafing around! Wild Pokemon patience roll success!

Dragon chirruped softly, pleased with this discovery. Ticklish friends are the best kinds of friends! And he was so well-equipped for tickling![break][break] The Bidoof noticed them! And she wasn't running away!! Today was off to a great start! The acknowledgement was all the encouragement Yahib needed. They dropped down onto their knees in the grass (carrying fewer masks allowed much greater flexibility) and shuffled closer to the pair. They thought they showed great restraint in not shuffling right next to the pokémon![break][break] As close as they dared get to the flower patch, Yahib lowered their head and took the biggest sniff they could muster. The particularly large nose of the mask over their face practically wobbled with the effort.[break][break] "Nope!" They declared after a moment's thought, "Can't smell a thing through this! But you two like them, so they must be great!"[break][break] Paying little mind to his trainer's antics, Dragon was focused on mimicking Bidoof's posture insofar as a bug could. He splayed his legs wide until his face was once again level with hers. Thus situated, he began to tease his antennae somewhat randomly over the parts of Bidoof he could reach, no longer investigating but instead searching for the best spot.[break][break]

Bidoof watches with such patience as she is capable of as Dragon attempts to settle himself in the same position that she is in. It's rather precious, and she tries to adjust her stance to something that maybe he is capable of himself!
All the same, her eyes are trained on the pokemon-not-pokemon-maybe-human person creature that is watching her. That is crouching with their many faces. That is slowly shuffling about.
The little Bidoof is distracted however, with a squeal of laughter, wiggling around until she almost falls over, squeaking with glee as long antennae poke about her fluff. She is so distracted she almost doesn't notice just how close the many-face-person is getting until Yahib says something.
It is so incredibly startling, suddenly right there with such a sniff! Such a response! And Bidoof was not expecting it! So she flails her tickled little feet until she falls over on her back with a startled noise, sort of a squeal, a bit like a growl, but mostly... just rather cute.
OOC: Wild Pokemon patience roll failed! Bidoof used Growl! Nincada's attack decreased!

He appreciates what she's doing, and thinks she deserves the best he can offer: Following her with his whiskers as she wiggles around, giving her no respite. He titters quietly to himself, pleased with his work and maybe backing away a little...those legs sure can flail![break][break] Yahib watches Bidoof's exposed belly, struck with a powerful urge to touch it. They do their best to resist: They wouldn't touch a human's belly without permission, and they try to treat pokémon the same way.[break][break] They find themself wishing they could communicate with Bidoof on the same level as Dragon, pokémon-to-pokémon. How does he know how much is okay? Does he ask? Did she tell her?[break][break] Did he just assume, as Yahib tends to do?[break][break] Like a lightningbolt, a thought strikes: This is probably a wild pokémon![break][break] "Hey!" Yahib declares, pushing aside their crown of masks to retrieve a great ball. "Do you live around here? Do you like it? It seems pretty great!"[break][break] They consider the ball for a moment. "Dragon doesn't like to spend much time in these, so you don't have to...but apparently they're quite comfy!"[break][break] Holding the ball out to Bidoof, they try to sound more confident: "Come with us! Once she gets her feet back under her, puffing with all the little squeals and giggles, the Bidoof shakes all of her plush fluff out, looking between Dragon and Yahib.
Oh! Such fun, such fun indeed. She tilts her head as the person - oh indeed, a human, behind that mask! - asks her a question. Does she like her home? Hmmmm.... With her little front feet, she scratches at her fluffy tummy, considering. "Biiiii...." She does like her home, that's true.... but, well. Her eyes focus on the Great Ball, and an ear twitches as she focuses.
She does like her home... but she also likes the idea of having fun! And these two are nice. Humans aren't so bad, afterall! With a great flash of red light, Bidoof disappears inside the Great Ball when her nose hits the latch. It rumbles, quivering in Yahib's hand. Once... twice...
*Ding!*
The Great Ball goes still and silent with a little noise, a green flash of finality.
New friend, achieved!

They suppose she must. They are asking her to leave her home, after all!
When she noses open the latch, they can't restrain a delighted squeak. It's echoed instantly by Dragon, who snaps upright and watches with rapt attention as the little ball wobbles in Yahib's hand. Did she change her mind...?
The chime of confirmation is instantly drowned out by an animalistic whoop!
"I told you we'd meet new friends today!" they remind Dragon.
He nods emphatically, before clambering up Yahib's leg and settling on their stomach. His little legs are all tired out from following what is probably the fastest human on the planet, and he needs a rest!
How clinging to a bodysuit counts as rest is beyond the human's understanding, but they swiftly march on, following alongside the path without returning to it.
More friends await!

And who needs a path, really? They say the best things are off of the beaten one, after all. The pokemon certainly aren't using them -- preferring to traipse through the grass, through the flowers and the underbrush, fly uneven lines through the sky and clouds...
... and oh! Right there, in the winding river, too!
A spray of water rushes inches from Yahib and Dragon, soaring by like a shot before spattering harmlessly into the grass of the route. The cause of the sudden attack is in the water. A bug; pale blue, a very small body, and incredibly long legs, skirting about the water! It slides over the water's edge like a dancer, elegant and swift. The pokemon appears to be enjoying itself, having fun near the shoreline. Part of its play appears to be spraying water from the point atop it's head, in no given direction, less like a targeted attack and more like a wild sprinkler.
Another shot goes by the duo, before the Surskit slowly drifts to a stop as it notices the people who it has nearly sprayed twice now. Eyes wide, it drifts side to side like an ice skater on the water's surface, curious. Waiting. Will a battle erupt? Is the fun over? It just isn't sure...

Ability: Compound Eyes: +2 to the DC of each accuracy check Held item: none Moves: Sand Attack, Scratch Yahib flinches to the side, one leg in the air, as something shoots for them...and sprays the ground far from where they were standing. It wouldn't have got them anyway.
Dragon perks up at the sudden movement, and the sound of rain. Did Bidoof leave her ball...?
Yahib allows themself to relax, and feels Dragon's legs tense. They plant their hand on his back. "Someone's just watering the plants!" They guess. It seems a little unnecessary, it rains pretty often.
They lose confidence in their assertion when they spot the culprit just in time to watch it send another spray in their direction. They can't help but flinch again, and this time they're less certain it was a waste of energy. Dragon releases his grip on Yahib's stomach and drops like a stone into the wet grass. He flips himself over and stares at the dancing bug for a long moment, swaying side to side in imitation. Cada! he calls out sharply. So it's a game of spraying? Yahib eagerly pulls up their pokédex app. They've never seen anything like this before! Dragon digs one leg into a dry(er) patch of earth, and flings it out towards Surskit. Powdery soil sprays out towards the river, and before it's even found its target he plants his leg back into the little divot he's made.

Ack! Pocket sand!? The Surskit isn't sure what it was expecting when the Nincada dropped like a beastly bomb from its trainer's belly. But it would seem that the other bug was certainly ready to rumble! It had called back - and this was a challenge, right? The human looks as surprised as it feels -- or maybe that's just the masks... -- but the sand is definitely not what it expected!
The powdery turf hits its eyes, and the Surskit reels back, skating across the water less like a seasoned athlete and more like a drunken hobo. It's a bit harder to see now, and in it's surprise and shock, the other Pokemon strikes back; a spray of water, a bit of a wild shot, but it hits, glancing off of Dragon's hide like a plume as it sails past.
Now, the Surskit is on the defensive, shaking it's head and squealing back in it's little hissing tone at the Nincada as it tries to get the sand out of its eyes without falling into the water. The game is on!
OOC: Nincada used Sand Attack! It rolled... 16! It hits! Surskit's accuracy has been lowered by 1 stage (3 points)! Surskit used Water Gun! It rolled... 10! It hits! It's super effective! Nincada takes 3 damage!

"Dragon"NincadaLvl 1 ♂ Bug Ground ATK: 8 DEF: 12 SPE: 4
Ability: Compound Eyes: +2 to the DC of each accuracy check Held item: none Moves: Sand Attack, Scratch Oh no?? From the moment Dragon dropped to the grass, something felt off to Yahib. Their legs plant firmly in the ground, rock-solid yet numb as they watch sand shower Surskit. It doesn't look happy about this.
It's remarkable how easily someone can re-wire their own instincts. Yahib's entire face is hidden behind one or more masks at any one time, so they long ago learned to translate facial expressions into cartoonish body language. At some point, that became natural. They don't even think about it any more, it just...happens.
And so they physically reel back when a stream of water strikes Dragon, and he winces. He looks hurt, shifting his weight to favour one leg. "Oh no!!" Yahib cries aloud, feeling at once helpless and a powerful urge to help. They rush to Dragon's aid, but stop short.
He's not that badly hurt. And he's staring up at Yahib, whiskers writhing in the air like normal."Are you okay?" They didn't bring any potions. They didn't think they'd need potions! They're supposed to be responsible for Dragon! This isn't very responsible!
Cada! Dragon reminds him, and turns back to Surskit. Before Yahib can decipher this message, the Nincada launches himself off the bank, one foreleg out, aiming right at Surskit, and the trainer remembers what panic feels like.

Cada, indeed!
Pokemon are Pokemon - resilient creatures, strong beyond belief, and able to take so much. It's impressive - and it's why competitive battling is the way it is. This is no competition, of course - a wildlands skirmish - but it may as well be, for the drive and determination that Dragon is showing!
The leap is perfectly timed, perfectly aimed, as if the little cicada is an expert at this. Maybe he is! The river is fairly shallow at this end - the scratch strikes true, and the Surskit spins out backwards just in time for Dragon to land safely at the edge of the bank.
The surprise is enough that it drops the water bug straight into the drink with a little splash. There is a moment of silence... - and a spray of water shoots out of the river, going rather wide and nowhere near either Nincada nor trainer! A harmless, if not wet, miss.
Surskit shoots up a moment later, right near Dragon. It's standing in the very shallows too, now, no longer floating above the surface, back down to earth with everyone else. One long spindly limb rests on the edge of the bank... ready for the next move of this insectoid back and forth, ready to push off into the water and attempt to skate again at a moment's notice! "Surssss!"
