| It was a rather busy day. Then again, every day was a busy day since pokémon came back. The odd creatures came out of no where once more and filled the entire world with noise, and one specific lab tech was discovering that not only are pokémon noisy, but they make such a mess! She sighed as she put the broom up, watching as the ditto was dead-set on climbing the walls to the ceiling without her input... very well.
She heard the door's bell ding a while ago. With a huff and marching towards the entrance with three Aipom hanging from her, she pushed the doors open.
"Devereux Abremont?" she asks as she peers at her clipboard. "We're ready for you. Please, follow me and... watching out for the pokémon..." she spun on her heel as best she could to march back towards the prepped area to introduce people to their potential pokémon companions.
The Aipom chuckles as they continued to cling to her, one letting go of her leg to approach the incredibly tall human. They chuckled again and reached up to grab at the man's hand with their tail. He'd made a great tree to climb! The purple creature gave its signature grin as it tried to lead the man to where the tech went. This was an exciting day, after all!

The day has brought so many surprises already for Devereux. He is certain, certain, that it is going to bring many more. After all, the day is still young.
It started with an early meditation to try to stave off the anxious energy building up in him. There was no family to run to in the morning, nobody to offer extra reassurance that he is making the right choice. He made the trip to Mistveil on his own, and he will weather this concern just as he has weathered everything else. It is time to get a Pokemon partner of his own.
Family seems to be with him wherever the large man goes, though, in spirit, thought, or otherwise. For when he enters the Mistveil Laboratory (oh so familiar from his graduate days, and yet, in the current day, not at all...) he is not the only person waiting. There could have been a million people, a billion, from this world and the next, anyone in the Region waiting in that lobby, for any reason. And yet, out of any soul in the world it could possibly be, it is one he recognizes:
Officer Cabrian Mizushima; his older brother's best friend from college.
The two know each other as mutual acquaintances at best, and in passing at worst. But there is recognition in the other man's eyes when they make eye contact, and so Devereux sits down next to him with a quiet hullo.
They are here for the same reason, he finds. By incredible coincidence; both of them encouraged and shuttled off to become Pokemon trainers of a sort, the official real deal. They talk about their reaction to the return, how things have changed. How uncertain they are, yet exciting. Cabrian asks how his brother is, and Devereux talks about him for a while too.
He talks a lot in general, really. Surprising.
But eventually, Dev hears his name, and he stops short mid-sentence, perking up and looking around. He isn't sure if he really heard his name, until he sees the lady veritably covered in Pokemon looking between him and a clipboard. He offers her a sympathetic smile, before turning his gaze to his companion. "Well, think that's me, then," he hums, standing. He dusts himself off. "I'll see you on the other side... as fellow trainers. Good luck. I'm sure you'll find a great partner."
Devereux offers a little bow to the officer, before he turns, his long legs carrying him across the room with minimal effort. "I'll do my best," he mumbles, eyeing the Aipom clinging to the lab tech's coat.
It seems the simian Pokemon is eyeing him too, for the lady hasn't made it entirely too far down the hall before one of them drops away to approach him. "Oh, hello there," he says softly, taking the Pokemon's offered tail in his hand. Dev holds it as delicately as he would a child's, following dutifully, as if he were listening to the Aipom, rather than the tech. "Are you here to help me out today, little one? How kind of you. You can climb up on my shoulder, if you like. I wouldn't mind."
Dev pulls his curly hair back away from his shoulder with his free hand, leaving a bared perch, should the Aipom want it. As he does so, his gaze searches forward and around the facility. It has changed a lot since he studied -- or rather... since Pokemon came back. "I must confess," he says to the tech as he catches up, quiet awe in his tone, his gaze, "After spending so many years studying Pokemon as they may have lived... it is always surreal to see them so... so alive. Thriving. And so kind, like this little fellow... It makes -- ah. It makes me feel... rather excited. Hopeful. To meet my own partner, today. Has it been hard, finding them all homes...?"

| The Aipom was overjoyed at the offer, and quickly scaled the tall human and settles on the shoulder with a happy chuckle. It nods at the question, though, pointing at a large receptacle filled with pokeballs in cylinders, ready to be released. The tech starts getting to work pushing buttons as the Aipoms rush to assist, pulling levers and spinning wheels. The laboratory mimic devices worked wonders for their enrichment, she had learned since they came back. They could help without messing anything up. She smiled as Devereux spoke and nodded. "I know how you feel. I could hardly believe it myself. It's... amazing, really. These little guys are perfect examples of how even wild pokemon can be sweet and gentle. They followed me here one day and stuck around. Guess they're my team..." she trailed off as one climbed up her shoulders and gave a chuckle as they held her hair out of her face as she worked. She reached up and scratched its ears. "We've had no trouble at all! The problem is making sure they go to good homes. We do background checks on everyone before we hand over a pokemon. Have to be careful with the extremist out there..." she pressed a button as the machine whirred to life and deposited six pokeballs into a case. She picked it up. "But today, Mr. Abremont, you get one of your own! Take a breath..."' She moved a bit away to give plenty of space for the pokemon as she picked up the first pokeball and tossed it out. The red light faded and perhaps there was a hitch of her breath as the fear that nothing would come out crept up her spine, but her fears were soon dismissed as what sat there was a black and red cat. It immediately started to lick its paw and let out a meow. "Ah! This is a Litten! A fire type pokemon. It can take a while to earn this type of pokemon's trust, but they use their hairballs as explosive weapons! This one is a real sweetie."She tosses out the next pokeball. A pokemon with a soft voice like a trilling bell appears as a sweet aroma flows from them. She smiles. "This is Comfey! A fairy type pokemon! They pick flowers to put onto their sticky, thin body. They are known to help people relax using their aroma. No two Comfey have the same scent, either! They all prefer different flowers. This pokemon doesn't evolve."The third one is tossed out and the blue seal gives a happy clap and an arf as it waves. "Popplio! A water type pokemon! These pokemon can make weapons using their snot as a bubble. It sounds gross, but they are very talented and work hard to make the best bubbles! They're kinda like the clowns of the sea!"The fourth option... the heavy feet of this pokemon slam into the ground as the sharp eyes of this pokemon stare Devereux down. "This is a Druddigon! A dragon type pokemon and rather rare, too! They are ambush predators and they tend to feast on the Diglett line. They are usually found in caves. This pokemon does not evolve."The fifth option is tossed out. A little dark colored bug looks up at Devereux and starts to shiver... it looks terrified. "Oh! A Scatterbug! This is a bug type pokemon! Their final evolution has many beautiful forms. Don't let the fear fool you, they can spew a deadly black powder at enemies. This powder also makes them hardy in all climates! We've even found some wandering around the volcano!"She picks up the final pokeball and tosses it out. The soft looking fox that pops out gives a happy bark as their tail wags. "Oh! An Eevee! A normal type pokemon, but they can evolve into almost any type! Its evolution depends on the environment its trained in, stones, time of day, how much it likes you, so on and so forth. The biggest challenge is choosing an evolution, or even wanting it to evolve!"She smiles at you. "What we know about these pokemon come from the old databases, but who knows how they'll be with you! You can take as much time as you need to pick one, and feel free to talk to them! This is a pretty big choice, after all! If you even need a day to think about it, I can mark their pokeballs and you can always come back!"

The setup of the lab room is actually somewhat precious. All the new 'machinery' that is ... well. It isn't hooked up to anything. But the Aipom don't know that - or they do and it helps. Either way, it makes Devereux smile. He loves seeing how included they are; how natural it feels, to just have these creatures as a part of life.
"They're family just as much as anyone else," Dev agrees. He grins, watching one of the Aipom help the tech, reaching up to scritch the one climbing about his shoulder and arm behind the ear. "And I'm glad such care goes into who they go to. I really am."
As the tech backs up, giving as much space to the room as possible, the reality of what is happening hits Devereux like a freight train. It's really happening. It's time. All these decades of family research, of history, of study... it's all about to be realized in his hands.
He is both exhilarated, excited, and cannot breathe, all in one.
It takes the Aipom on his shoulder tugging gently at his hair to snap him out of his fugue of emotion. He inhales sharply all at once, a quiet little ragged breath, all the hype and emotion and excitement crashing over him like a wave. "Hi there, sweetheart..." he whispers, almost reverently, as the little Litten meows at him, it's bright eyes staring straight into his soul.
And it just keeps getting better. Pokemon after Pokemon, all shapes and sizes. A little flower fairy, filling the room with it's soft scent - the happy barks of a seal standing on tail, rolling about and beginning to play with the kitten. A giant dragon, catching him off-guard, on the back foot, imposing in stature and with it's massive wingspan. A tiny little bug, shivering, but so, so sturdy... And a tiny little fox, so beautiful and soft, creamy in color and warm of eyes.
They're all so beautiful.
Devereux exhales softly, his gaze caught up in that of the Druddigon's. The great beast stares him down, as if searching for something. He isn't sure what it's looking for -- but based on the way that the dragon eventually huffs, shaking its head and turning away, Dev doesn't think that it found it. That's okay... he isn't entirely sure if he'd be able to handle a dragon immediately anyway. The great creature deserves a more experienced -- or ready -- trainer.
But the others - oh, they are all so small. "It's okay?" He says, as if asking permission that it is indeed alright to interact with them all. Either way he doesn't seem to wait for a response, instead very carefully kneeling down, and then sitting on the floor entirely, putting himself much closer to the smaller Pokemons' level.
"Hello there," Devereux hums, holding his hand out, palm down. The Eevee immediately runs up and bunts his hand, sniffing excitedly. "Goodness. I'm excited to see you too. And hey, hey... it's okay, little guy. You don't have to be alright... such a strong creature from an unsuspecting form. You deserve respect, you know?"
Maybe he imagines it, but the Scatterbug seems to be shivering a little less. But it does keep its distance, and Devereux respects that. He doesn't want to frighten the little thing.
The other four, though... The Comfey settles down on his head like a flower crown, it's long tail (body?) curling around. The scent is sweet -- a little sweeter than he's used to dealing with, and it almost gives him a little bit of a headache with the heady aroma, but he is both unwilling to remove the Pokemon, or say anything. It's helping to calm his nerves. It helps.
The Popplio seems quite content with playing with the Aipom, and living up to exactly what the tech mentioned - blowing bubbles from it's nose, to the delight of the monkeys. It's precious! And brings a smile to the tall man's face as he watches. "I wish I could bring all of them with me," he reflects almost absently. "I'm sure everyone says that. Such amazing creatures... All with their own personalities and beauties. And I just..." He laughs, the noise low and velvety. "I went to college here, y'know. Pokemon Ecology. Who would've thought that a historical major would've changed so drastically. It can be a living field again. And here I am, just..."
Looking for all the world like a fairy-tale prince, really. Sat down, cross-legged on the floor, with a dragon sitting nearby, insect on it's foot. A living flower crown in his hair, one little seal rolling around his outstretched leg, a purple monkey perched, hanging from his shoulder, chuckling like a little fiend. A kitsune, even, demanding his attention, nipping at his fingers and pushing into his hand, using his fingertips as a scratching post to get juuuuust that good spot.
"Yeah, you're a sweet lil' one, aren't you? Such a good little Eevee, precious baby... well." Devereux pauses, staring at the Eevee as it shakes out its long ears. Dev's about ready to have another go at more pets when the Popplio bowls into the fox Pokemon, ready for more play. With a little squeal, Devereux is forgotten entirely as the Eevee pounces back, tail whipping around with joy. He can't help the laugh.
But the Eevee seems to like him... and he likes the Eevee... so maybe... "Well. It would seem.... I think I'll -- oh?"
Suddenly, there is a weight in his lap. And when Devereux turns his head and looks down, there is none other but the first Pokemon out of it's ball. The little Litten, planted directly on top of his leg, staring at him with wide, unblinking eyes. He feels as if, like with Druddigon, he is being searched. Tested.
He doesn't move.
It doesn't move.
And then, quietly, the Litten stands up. It moves a step closer, and then another, and another, until it's front feet are moving up his stomach, until it is standing with back feet in his lap and front feet on his chest, getting up on eye level, staring. Staring...
With an air of finality, Litten leans in, sniffing nose-to-nose at Devereux, sniffing his scarred eye... and then leaning back to bunt his chin as hard as it can, rubbing its cheek all over his neck. Mine, it seems to be saying.
"Well," Devereux exhales, both amused and emotional. He reaches up as he feels the other Pokemon moving away from him; just him and Litten, rubbing it's cheeks as it mews at him, purring like a little motorboat. "...Ma'am, I daresay that I didn't choose my Pokemon. It chose me. Isn't that right, little one?"
The Litten sits back in his lap, tail swishing side to side. And then it lets out a meow of surprising volume, as if an exclamation of claim.
"Yeah, me too," Dev whispers. "Alright then. Litten...? I choose you, too."

| She leaned back and let the magic of what pokemon were happen. She learned that giving someone space to truly experience them was the best option available, especially since no one has been around them for forever. It was as vital for the trainer as it was for the pokemon as well. She watched them all carefully, knowing these pokemon were picked due to having calm enough natures for people to meet, but still powerful enough to be worthy as someone's first pokemon partner. It wouldn't do to give someone a freshly hatched pokemon--or new trainers a more powerful one.
She nodded as permission to touch them was asked, but she knew it didn't have to be given. This was just such a special moment. Like when she got her little team of aipom. They really helped a lot. With her doing the job and with helping be a good first introduction to pokemon...
As the decision was being made, she bit back a laugh as the Litten planted themselves on the man. "I have to agree! You've been chosen alright."
She recalled the rest of the pokemon, leaving the Litten out. She picked up the cat's pokeball and held it out. "Here, you're very first pokemon! And I agree... a practice that is now viable in the actual world again... I feel the same... I look forward to researching pokemon alongside someone like you! Now get on out there and have an adventure!"

Devereux reaches up to take the Pokeball with one hand, the other dutifully continuing to scratch his Litten's cheek, who is leaning almost sideways into his hand, vibrating with the force of her purring. "Thank you," he says, grinning. His eyes are warm, bright, almost shiny with emotion. "Gods above, but I love her already. I do."It's a careful thing. He takes the Pokeball in hand, pockets it without disturbing the little cat, and then scoops her into his arms, cradled like a baby. She immediately props her front paws on his chest, rubbing her face against his. She trills happily. He kisses the top of Litten's head, before bending his knees under him, standing in a surprisingly graceful, fluid motion. "I must say, I look forward to researching alongside you and your team as well. It's a whole new world out there. Maybe you'll see some of my research come through in articles or notes to be parsed through sometime." The tall man offers a smile, bowing his head in thanks. "Thank you. Truly."Devereux steps towards the door, pausing only a moment, to look down at his partner, who is looking up back at him. Her whiskers twitch, and his grin returns as he steps out the door. "Alright sweetheart. It's you and me. Let's get to it then."
