| It was rather early, the lab's lights having just come on for the public, but one man had been there since around... oh... four days ago starting at three in the morning. Things had to be done since pokemon had come back to Deprin. Everyone was out rushing for a pokemon partner and wanting to have questions answered or old pokeballs checked out to determine what's in them...
It was joyful work, sure, but he was on his fiftieth cup of coffee, and this time he poured an energy drink into it. Of course, the day was just getting started. He looked at the scheduled appointments--something that made his life easier.
"Right," he yawned as he looked at his partner pokemon, a very energetic Meowth with a beautiful dark coat that matched her stunning eyes. She was an Alolan variety. "Let's make some dreams come true, hm?" He walked off, his Meowth following with her funny little walk.
"Officer Cabrian Mizushima?" he asked, looking at his board. "We're ready for you... please follow me and we'll introduce you to your new partner pokemon." He held the door to the lab open, sipping his coffee. He watched his Meowth walk up to the guy and give a little curtsy and give a 'meowth meowth!' before marching off towards the prepared room.

It is good to be back on the campus he spent so much time on, memories flashing here and there as Cabrian navigates quads and hallways. It is still somehow far enough away, though, to feel a bit odd in a way he can't describe. Still, it is nice to be back. It doesn't take him long to find the lab, both from the copious signage and old muscle memory. He'd been here plenty of times for various things, gathering information on the history of Pokemon in law enforcement chief among them.
One other reason he recalls surprises him as he sits trying to contain enthusiasm with his usual calm demeanor. Cabrian would recognize his best friend's little brother anywhere, even if they have only ever known each other in passing. The familiar face pulls a smile out of the man as his acquaintance sits next to him. He meets a gentle greeting with one of his own, but just as quickly, the tall man is ushered away. "Good luck, Devereux." is all he can get out before a woman and some aipom take him away. He'll have to tell Arluin he'd run into his brother, here of all places. Members of their family were born for this. Cabrian himself, however...
Cabrian's thought process is jarred by the calling of his name, and he stands abruptly and sharply. The man summoning him looks as if he's never known a day of sleep in his entire life, but he says nothing, thinking it entirely too rude. "Here. I am ready." The man gripping his coffee like a lifeline takes this with grace, turning to lead Cabrian away, but a little Meowth catches the officer's eye. She stops and offers a curtsy, and Cabrian responds immediately and sincerely with a proper bow, deciding to follow her, specifically, into the lab in his steadily less concealed excitement.
Pokemon deserve as much respect as any human, and he intends to supply it. Who the companion he may next supply it too...well. "I am in your hands, sir."

| As soon as the mewoth was certain the new human was in the room, she moved to get the door closed then rushed to help her human prepare things. The exhausted lab tech gave a huge yawn as she put things where they needed to be. "Oh?" he exclaimed as she purred at him, holding up his cup of coffee. "Well, aren't you an angel! Thank you!"She gave a happy meow and jumped back to the ground and hit a few buttons on a large machine with pokeballs visible through the glass. "Okay, officer," the guy said as he clicked a few more buttons. "I'd love to give you one of the pokemon often used by law enforcement, but that's going to be up to Lady Luck here, right, Lucky?" He asked as he looked at the Meowth. She nodded. "But all the pokemon we have in here," he said while tapping the machine, "are ready and fit for new trainers which uuuuuuh we all are, yeah? Yeah. Let's get started!"He looked to Lucky and she nodded as she hit the big red button and activated the machine. It deposited six pokeballs into a box. The tech picked up the box and stepped back, picking up the first pokeball and tossing it out. A floating seahorse like pokemon came out, looking at the man before letting out a burbling call. "Skrelp! A poison water type pokemon. They look like dead seaweed to avoid predators. It clings to seaweed, too, and heats it... lives and breathes seaweed, really."He tossed out the next one. A round ball, much like a pokeball, rolled out and then opened its eyes. "Voltorb! The electric type pokemon. Some theories say that pokeballs were designed to look like this pokemon. They like to uuuuh blow themselves up." He sipped his coffee. "Weird, but true."The third... "Tepig! A fire type pokemon. This little guy has a lot of energy!"The fourth choice was tossed out. A flying bat with sharp talons came out, giving a sinister chuckle. "Gligar! A ground flying type pokemon! It's immune to electric attacks, which is good cause otherwise it'd be easily fried."The fifth... a small little yellow spider that looked as fluffy as it did small. "Joltik! I love these guys. A bug electric type. These small guys stick to other stuff to build up static electricity. They are too small to make their own."The final pokeball was tossed out and a massive orb of a pokemon crashed to the ground, causing the cement to crack as it let out a peaceful, beautiful call. "This is a Wailmer, a water type pokemon. Their final evolution get massive. They sometimes inflate themselves with salt water to bounce around on land like a beach ball."He sipped his coffee, content to wait with Lucky as the man made his choice.

Cabrian stood patiently by the machine he most certainly did not understand, watching Lucky go about her tasks. Fascinating. It's amazing what a Pokemon can do - and what they will do. He can see now, more clearly than ever, how Pokemon fit in with the force so well. Imagine how much more they could do now, with Pokemon partners to help. What would crime be like in Port Bellevue? He will get to see, he realizes. He will get to see, in his own lifetime. How lucky he is, indeed.
The rattle of the pokeballs is as exciting a sound as any, and his already sharp attention is completely honed in on the tech beginning to toss out each Pokemon. Seeing them, really seeing them is a joy that makes me smile, something he is only barely aware of in the excitement. He watches as patiently as possible as each arrives in turn, awed at the choices - at the opportunity. When the final ball is opened, and its occupant appears (loudly), breath catches in Cabrian's throat. Wailmer. Truly? If only great-grandpa could see this now...
But each Pokemon, all Pokemon, deserve a chance, and Cabrian walks to Skrelp and kneels down. The small little thing seems to back up a bit, searching around, possibly for seaweed. This little one seems so fit for his homme, but so unready for a human. "Hello there. I think it's really very amazing, all you can do with seaweed. If you prefer to keep to yourself though, that's alright. I know you will be very happy no matter what." He smiles gently and backs up just a bit to offer the Skrelp more space to feel comfortable, and then shuffles to greet the next Pokemon.
It isn't easy. Voltorb is, he is certain, a good Pokemon. The second it sparks ambiently, though, he jumps back. As much as one can when kneeling on the floor. Cabrian pauses to gather himself, and then offers a proper kneeling bow from the greater distance. "Forgive me. I have...I have a bit of a fear of lightning, you see. I do not think I could ask you to come with me, for my sake or yours. You deserve a companion who can stand with you fearlessly." A second bow, just as formal. Afraid, yes. Apologetic, very. To have his own fears shut down a Pokemon's journey feels terrible. Still, he'd said it was best for them both, and he meant it. It would seem he can get closer to the next one.
The little Tepig is, in a word, cute. And excited, immediately poking about at Cabrian's knees. It's hard not to grin at the curious little thing, petting it carefully as it squirms around. Admittedly, he isn't sure how he'd feel about a fire type companion when he is a child of an ocean town, but he must be open to everything. This is how one sees the world more clearly. And it is precious. "You are very sweet, little one. I bet you grow up very strong, too! Do you think you'd like exploring? Chasing? I think you would do well. But please let me speak to the others as well? You are a wonderful little thing." It is, even when Cabrian has to dodge an excited tiny fireball. That....could be both fun and difficult. The image of his singed clothes comes to mind as he scoots over again.
The Gligar kindly meets Cabrian down near the floor, hovering just above. It's such an odd-looking little bat, unexpected claws drawing his genuine curiosity. He leans in just a little bit to look at the bat more closely, and has to rely on the reflexes drilled into him to dodge out of the way of its sudden swooping dash. He's sitting on the floor, turned back to watch it dart about the room, recovering himself when he catches its eye. "My apologies for invading your space. I will leave you be." Perhaps the next will be a bit more open?
Getting himself properly situated again, Cabrian slides over from where Gligar had been to Joltik. It is so tiny and Cabrian finds he can stay still instead of jumping out of his own skin when the little bug hops onto the back of his hand. It can't do anything by itself, right? "Hello little one. You...you take electricity from others? That is quite amazing, you really are a wonder. Ah. If I could ask you to wait to use any you get from me until I am gone, I would very much appreciate it. Just imagine, if I am already a little afraid now, how intimidating you will be when you evolve! I hope you will do wonderful, little friend." It is a sweet, gentle little bug but Cabrian knows, it just won't work. He cannot let his fear hold them back any more than him. And, it is time.
To approach Wailmer, Cabrian gets himself up on his feet. The whale Pokemon is huge, just like the one by the docks, but here, right in front of him. If only great-grandpa could see this, could see him now, see Cabrian's childhood stories coming to life for him. His excitement is palpable, and he can't stop smiling. Wailer seems to notice, gently bumping the man like a ball bouncing sideways, deep vocalizing a comforting noise. "Hello. I have seen one Wailmer before, but from a distance. It is truly an honor. I can see you are a sturdy, gentle one. My great-grandfather was close friends with a Wailmer, you see, and told me many stories. I would never set expectations on you though, you are your own pokemon, yes? I am certain you have your own wonderful qualities. I would like to know them."
Cabrian looks back to the little Tepig, then back to Wailer. Just one. Both, he knows, would be wonderful. Both, he knows, could be great companions. Great fighters. Great friends. But the question in already answered in his heart.
He puts his hand gently on Wailler, gently against its side. "I would like to see you for you, promising you I won't expect you to be anything else. Grandpa's story was wonderful. But this is my story, now. This is ours. Will you come with me, my friend?"
The Wailer offers a deep groan of approval, bumping himself against Cabrian's hand and sending the man back a foot or two before chasing after him to try it again, more gently this time.
With wailer bouncing minutely against him, Cabrian turns to smile at the tech. "I have my partner, sir."

| The tech smiled and nodded as Lucky began to purr. They both always liked seeing people choose their new partner. The tech recalled all the other pokemon and put them back in the box. He'd shuffle them back into the machine later. He picked up the Wailmer's pokeball and tossed it to the brand new trainer. "Nice to see you made a good friend already! We'll set you up with everything you need outside like some food and a list of what to feed em and all."He smiled as he and Lucky both nodded at the new pair. The wailmer continued to bounce into Cabrian's side, bounce gently back, and repeat its affectionate cycle as the man patted its hide. "I like you, too. I hope we'll have fun, traveling together, my new friend." They will, he knew it. Care, feeding, training, he'll learn it all. There are so many tidbits Grandpa passed on - hopefully most of them were accurate. "I do appreciate the information. Is it alright to come back to ask if I find I don't know something? I will do my very best, of course."
It was easy to say it, but he knew, he could do this, with his new friend. He raised the pokeball to call wailmer back - after all, he wasn't going to fit through the door - and paused. "Wailmer my friend, what do you think of the name 'Admiral'?"
Grandpa, Cabrian was now certain, would be very, very proud.
