This really could only go this way, but Cabrian can't help but gasp as Admiral flies into the unsuspecting Litten across the field. He's frozen for a moment, watching as the little kitty rolls backward, watching as she pulls herself unsteadily onto her feet, watching as she resets herself on the field. It is terrifying. For Cabrian and Admiral both. The whale pokemon makes a curious and worried little noise, gently moving toward Litten until Cabrian breaks out of his worried haze. Litten is a pokemon, she is more resilient than any normal kitten could hope to be. She was built for this. "Admiral, she's okay. Come on back to your position, okay? She's a tough girl, don't you worry. You can check on each other when it's over, okay? Focus now for me, buddy."Admiral makes one last little whining call, but turns back, heading to his spot as Litten settles in hers. His human has been so kind so far, he wouldn't lie, would he? He can do this. He's ready! For...something? "Okay Admiral, let's try this one more time! Let's see if we can do it again, but maybe a little less bounce this time? Not too gentle, but we don't need to hit quite that hard again right now, do we? Okay, once more, Admiral! Body slam!"
Admiral listens attentively, and when Cabrian says to go, despite his earlier concern, he goes. Only one bounce, one good bounce, and he surges forward, hopefully less painfully. Hopefully. OOC:

Evidently, one good bounce is all it takes.
Not too hard, not too gentle... but not too gentle means a rebound strike as Litten herself is midair. "You're doing good, Litten - hang in there, one more hit!" Devereux calls out. She nods - one unsteady step becomes two. And then she is stumbling forward into a run at her trainer's behest, leaping up for another tiny paw slap...
This time when Admiral slams into her, she goes down hard. There is no comedic flight, nor drunken tottering around. When Litten gets smacked, it isn't as hard -- but it's hard enough that she doesn't go flying, doesn't bounce. She makes a squeak noise, and then she slams straight into the ground, skids a few feet... and after a few little unnerving twitches of her tail, she thumps her head against the ground and does not rise again.
Devereux is entirely silent for a long few moments. He doesn't say anything, barely even breathes, until, quietly: "...Litten?"
When she doesn't respond, he makes a little 'ah' noise, and quietly approaches, kneeling down at her side. "That's the match - she can't go on anymore." When he reaches a hand out for the little cat to sniff, she tries to reach out her head to nose at him, before seizing up. Instead, she just pitifully mewls, and with a soft little noise, Devereux scoops her up into his arms.
Cradling his Pokemon partner close, Devereux then grabs his discarded paperwork and crosses the rest of the way to Admiral, reaching out a hand to gently pat the Wailmer, allowing him to see the fallen Litten. "She's okay, buddy. It's alright, see? Just needs a little rest at the counter inside and she'll be just fine. Don't you worry. You did a great job." When he looks up from Admiral to Cabrian, he smiles warmly, holding out his hand. "Congratulations - that was a hell of a victory. We'll certainly remember that. And thank you - for a first Pokemon battle... ever, really. That was extremely exciting. I can't wait to see how we evolve with our team. Using Admiral's bounce like that... it was brilliant. I was expecting a watery deluge - my little spitfire didn't stand a chance."
Devereux tilts his head and looks down at the little cat resting in his arms, feeling the stiffness of her limbs under his fingertips. "Well... that in mind. Both of them worked out pretty hard. Shall we get them healed up inside at the center counter inside? I'd like to show Admiral she's alright... I don't want either of you to worry."
Not to mention his own. But he doesn't say anything about that.
OOC: Battle over. Wailmer has won!

Cabrian picks up his packet in a hurry, racing across to Admiral to check on Litten with him. True, it was a battle that Pokemon are equipped to handle. True, a trip to center for a quick heal and they'll both be good as new.
Cabrian just cannot help feeling worried for the little Litten as she lays in a heap. Admiral is as worried as Cabrian, if not more so, sad noises as he bobs closer to her. He feels so bad! He hit her too hard! He starts a bit at Cabrian's slightly shaky hand on his side. "It's okay, Admiral. It's okay, she'll be alright. You did so well, I'm so proud of you! Come now, let's get you into your ball, and we can get you both tended to. Then you'll see she's good as new, okay?"
It takes a few more words of assurance before the wailmer will retreat to his pokeball, crooning sad noises all along. Once he's returned, Cabrian hangs onto the ball, not bothering to put it in his bag or anything else. Admiral stays close. He'll figure out a way to keep his pokeball like that long term. Devereux and Litten await him though, and he walks alongside the taller man as they move toward the center.
"I really am very sorry, Devereux. I didn't think he'd hit quite that hard. I am proud of him, truly, and I think it was a wonderful match! I just...want to see her okay, I think it would help me feel better about how battles go. Is that silly? This is all very new."

"It's not silly at all. I would be remiss to say that I wasn't worried, too. Even if I know this is just how Pokemon are... a first time is scary, when you don't expect it." Devereux smiles at Cabrian, reaching up his hand holding the documentation to gently nudge his fellow trainer in the shoulder. "You needn't apologize for being a trainer. You could say that the two of you performed... admiral-bly?"
He grins rakishly as they approach the door, that kind of expression of a man clearly overly proud of himself for something he absolutely should not be proud about. He can feel Litten's tail thump against his chest, stiff as it is, disapprovingly. Devereux ignores this and pulls the door open, holding it open for Cabrian, winking as the man passes. It was such a good joke.
"But really," Devereux says as he catches up on their way to the counter, "We're both new to this. It isn't silly - I feel the same at wanting to make sure Admiral is okay. It wasn't quite a one sided bout, after all. He did good, and so did she, and they'll both be alright, and so will we - hello, sir? Yes, we just had a sparring match, and I know you look after - oh yes, in her ball, of course. Apologies."
Devereux sets his paperwork down on the counter to retrieve Litten's ball, cooing at her gently as she shuffles closer against him. "I know sweetie, I know you don't want to. It's only for a bit, okay? That's my girl." Obediently - not that she has much choice - Litten returns to the ball, and Devereux hands it to the clerk much as Cabrian does with Admiral.
It will only be a few minutes, they are told, and Devereux opts to wait at the counter, leaning against it and looking up at Cabrian as his thumb messes with the edge of his paperwork packet. "Amazing creatures, really - so resourceful, and strong, and... ah. Hmm." Suddenly the tall man goes quiet, before he straightens up a bit, looking at Cabrian with a hopeful smile. "....I think I have a name."

Cabrian stops, blinks, and a small hint of a smile tugs at the corners of his lips. That was a terrible joke. It was cute. And it diffuses some of the worry and tension set in his shoulders and features. Of course Litten is alright. But he is not going to directly acknowledge that, Devereux clearly pleased enough without his encouragement!
He's grateful that a trip to the center is only a few minutes, and he is content to slide to the side, out of the way, and stand relaxed to wait. "If she is so resilient now, I can scarcely imagine what she can take when she evolves. I look forward to seeing her grow. Whenever we see one another, at any rate. We should exchange contact info. If you're willing, of course. I know that Admiral seems like he'd appreciate knowing how his friend is doing, at the very least. And it would be nice to keep in contact with a new friend out there on the road, you know?"
Cabrian looks over Dev's face, checking that he hasn't overstepped or made him uncomfortable. They are essentially acquaintances at best. He really hopes it's okay.
"I'll probably head out to Route 6 when I leave here. I'm hoping I can figure out catching wild pokemon. Admiral shouldn't be all by himself. Will you be looking for more friends for your Litten, too?"
The counter clerk calls out their names, and Cabe closes the gap to reach out for Admiral's pokeball, a comforting thing to hold, suddenly. "A name? Well then, why don't we go outside and let them visit, and you can tell her."

"I hadn't even thought of evolution..." Devereux's voice quiets with a bit of awe as he turns his gaze up to the LED screen, the information about their Pokemon flashing across the surface. He notes their vitals, and -- ...paralysis? Oh.
She is luckier, more resilient, than he thought. "But it will be a magnificent thing when it happens. When they both grow." Devereux tilts his head, hair falling over his shoulder as his gaze meets Cabrian's once more at the other man's question. There is no discomfort on Devereux's face whatsoever; rather, there is only quiet contemplation for a moment as he takes in the request. But as he opens his mouth to answer, the clerk calls their names, interrupting him.
When Cabrian turns back to face Devereux, the man has slipped his phone out of his pocket, and is waiting patiently with a warm smile. "Here," he says. He hands the device over, already open to a new contact page. "I'd like to keep contact with you too, if you don't mind, Cabrian. Please add yourself? And then we can update each other on our new friends when we catch them, and each other. I'll be looking for wild pokemon, too, yes. But we're heading up north towards Sylvanport ourselves, so it might be a bit before we see each other again in person."
Handing off his phone, Devereux passes by his new friend to step up to the counter and accept Litten's pokeball back with a quiet note of thanks. The clerk waves him off with a smile. Litten's ball is warm in his hand, and still so new, so shiny, so pristine. He runs his thumb over the release mechanism and smiles. I hope you like the name, little one...
Gesturing with his head to Cabrian, Devereux starts walking back towards the doors outside. "We've got them back now, so shall we?"
The sunlight feels good on Devereux's skin, and he takes a long deep breath as he steps outside. All the worry and apprehension over Litten's wellbeing has lifted from his shoulders entirely. She's perfectly alright, Admiral is alright - and he's made himself a new friend, too! Two - no, three new friends in a single day. What a wonderful thing. Papa would be proud of him.
"Alright then, come on out," Devereux hums, and tosses the ball gently. Litten bursts out in a flare of light, and as Dev pockets the ball that bounces back to his hand, she stretches herself out languidly, shaking out limbs once stiffened with paralysis. Good as new! "Feeling better?"
She meows at the tall man, and he grins, before looking back to Cabrian, leaning on one foot, his posture much more relaxed. "Alright then. Let's get ourselves acquainted with our information, and let them visit, and then we'll tell her, yeah? You ready to see your new friend, girl? You sure are!"

Cabrian slides Admiral's pokeball into his sleeve to free his hands, taking Devereux's phone. A new friend is always welcome, especially entering such a new phase of his life. It will be good to have someone to reach out to, even if at a distance. Also, at risk of being creepy, he knows where he lives! Best not to say that...
He manages to get all his information into the new contact slot, and passes the phone back to Devereux when they make it back outside. It is an utter relief to see Litten again, stretching and moving around like nothing at all had happened to her. Certainly not getting hit by a three-hundred pound whale. Nope, not her! Cabrian kneels down, smiling brightly at the little fire pokemon and offering a hand for a scritch, if she chooses to take it. "Hello, little one. I'm very glad to see you safe and sound. You are very, very strong, do you know that? Admiral was very worried, too, so I hope it's alright for him to say hello too."
Cabrian picks himself up slowly, and reaches into his sleeve for the small pokeball that is still warm to the touch. It's a quick thing to release the catch and toss it out gently, summoning forth the bouncy bundle that is Admiral. The whale pokemon croons on seeing Cabrian, bopping over to bounce into his side, notably gentle. It's delightful. "Hello Admiral. It's so good to see you, too, my friend. Your new friend Litten is back as well! See?"
Cabrian can hardly point to the little Litten before Admiral starts moving toward her with an excited croon. "Gentle now, Admiral, gentle. I'll make sure to ask about Litten for you as much as I can, okay? Devereux, maybe a picture for them to exchange now and again? He seems very attached already to her."

Devereux reaches up to take his phone back when it is offered to him once the two of them are outside. And then he freezes for a moment. Wasn't Cabrian's pokeball just in his hand? Where did it go? Wait. Hold on.
He almost misses the very sweet interaction between Cabrian and Litten he is so flummoxed about this mysterious disappearance. Litten doesn't seem to care. As soon as Cabrian kneels down and offers his hand, she is sidling over, giving him the Eye. Her tail thwips suspiciously as she slowly extends her neck out to lean over and sniff slowly at his fingertips.... it is all a ploy, of course. Fake. A setup. As soon as she lets him stew in her sniffing for a moment, Litten gives up the ghost and bunts Cabrian's hand as hard as she can, stepping forward and leaning very hard into the scritches with equally loud purring.
The noise of protest that she makes at the hand being taken away is what gets Devereux's attention, and only just enough that he notices the reappearance of Admiral's pokeball (what???) from Cabrian's sleeve, of all places.
How?
Such mystification is forgotten in the wake of the reunion of two new best friends, however. Devereux's attention is back on the two pokemon, smiling warmly at trainer and Wailmer. Admiral is such a sweet, gentle creature. It's wonderful. "The two of you are such a perfect pair," he says idly.
Litten seems to agree - or maybe it's just her joy at seeing Admiral. The whale bounces to her, and she bounces back. The first thing she does is immediately bounce off his side again, as a playful greeting. The noise she makes back is a mewl that is equally as excited as his own. And then she immediately rears up, plants her little front paws on Admiral's front, and proceeds to rub her cheeks and face all over the Wailmer, purring up a storm, affectionate and joyful. Devereux tilts his head to look over to and answer Cabrian just as she winds herself up and leaps on top of Admiral's head.
"Of course. I think that would be precious. Photos whenever they want. And of course we could video chat when we aren't near one another, yes? Allow them to see and talk to each other while we do ourselves?" Smiling, Devereux does exactly as asked. A photo to exchange. He takes a photo - a few, actually - of the two with his phone, only to immediately send them to Cabrian via the new contact. It's punctuated with a few heart emojis, and then the device is slid back into his pocket.
That done, he turns his smile at Cabrian, and steps forward, kneeling down to pat Admiral on the head and look Litten in the eye.
"...It's just as Cabrian said, yes? You're very, very strong. A little spitfire. You don't ever back down. That's a good girl." He reaches a hand up and she leans into the pet with a happy noise. "A little fire warrior. You are deserving of a name befitting that title. That energy. That strength." The little Litten goes very still, looking deep into her trainer's eyes as he settles back on his heels and smiles. He pauses for a second, as if to be sure that everyone is listening, and then Devereux takes a quiet little breath.
"Ahihaka." Dev's smile widens into a grin as the little kitten thinks about it, her name, her ears swiveling, until she sits straight up, ears straight, tail stiff, kneading her little paws into Admiral's skin. She meows, loudly, a warrior's roar, and Devereux laughs brightly as he stands, allowing her to prance around, leap off of Admiral and show off, affectionate and joyful in her new moniker.
As she does so, he looks to Cabrian. "It's settled, then. My family - generations upon generations ago. They were from Alola. And Litten is a species native to that very same region. Ahi is the Alolan word for fire - and a Haka is a native dance of warriors, meant to show strength, pride, and unity of a people. It is a war dance. And... I felt that fitting. A little fire warrior. I think she quite likes it... what do you think?"

Cabrian watches Devereux quietly as he slides Admiral's pokeball back into his sleeve, hiding the smile that belies his recognition of That Look. He remembers Devereux's brother being a bit mystified at first too, along with a few others during his university days. He opts to say nothing at all unless asked - that's half the fun.
Having the little Litten take him up on the offer of pets is a delight, pleased to be approved of. Aunt Anna always said cats were choosy. He gets just a moment of her time though, once Admiral arrives on scene. The interaction is so precious, he can't help but grin wide. It is comforting to know Admiral has a friend already, one that is apparently claiming him as her own with adorable marking face rubs. This is going to be a cute friendship.
Cabrian can feel his phone buzz a minute later, photos coming in that are definitely going to be his background. The first few of many, he is certain! He puts the thought away, though, as Devereux offers the Litten her name. He watches her as she considers it, sizes it up with characteristic cat-like focus. Cabrian thinks it's wonderful. Thankfully, Ahihaka herself does too. He smiles at her little strut, the confidence of this tiny thing could power an entire region. Admiral bounces - gently! - a few times to encourage her and show his own approval. What does Hotako call this? A hype-person? Something like that, anyway!
"It's a good name. Strong and fearless, just like her. I bet she'll come up with a dance of her own, too. I'm convinced she can withstand anything, now. It's no small feat to have a Wailmer smash into you, twice, and be here to strut about. She's very tough. I don't know if you intend to do gym battling, but if so, she'll be a fierce competitor. I can only imagine what she'll be able to do when she evolves. Will you be trying gym battles? I read in the packet - I remember this and not moves, I have work to do - that where Arluin and you are from is where the old league from so many decades past was. Is? What is it like now?"

"I think so too," Devereux agrees, his eyes softening at the corners. Looking back, he squints a little - he has not worn his glasses today, out of forgetfulness and excitement over the day, and is paying for it now - at the two pokemon as his expression softens with fondness. His one eye is fine. It is the other... he closes it, eventually, observing the two as if the sun has gotten a little too intense, forcing him to squint. This is not the case, of course. It is easier, anyway.
"We've known each other but a day. Scant hours, at that. And yet I know, I know; there is nothing in the world that could keep Ahihaka down. Not for long. She is fire incarnate. I..."
Devereux trails off in thought. He had not considered it, really. The League had been long dead for more than a few decades now. Long since the Pokemon had disappeared. But there have been stirrings - from multiple cities, now. Trainers who have taken up a mantle, become backbones of their communities. The way gyms used to be. The way the League used to be.
He crosses his arms for a moment and makes a low noise of consideration, before shaking his head with a curious smile, looking back to Cabrian. His full attention is on the other man now, even if in the back of his mind he is still listening to Ahihaka and Admiral playing together happily. He huffs an exhale of laughter, body language relaxing, opening, arms falling loose so he can gesture with his hands as he talks. "Moves change so often, what you recall is history, don't worry. I hadn't considered gym battles, truly. I know for so many trainers - mine and Lou's history included, the League was like a rite of passage, almost. Tradition. I could see Ahihaka being willing. A challenge of her own strength to grow. She'd like that. But myself? ...hmm."
The tall man gestures vaguely for a moment, before shrugging. "I'm unsure. What about you? Are you going to? I think it would be nice, to take part in a piece of history. That being said..." His smile falters for a moment into something somber, before he tilts his head. Pushing hair out of his face (he really ought to start wearing a ponytail) he gestures a bit helplessly, bemused. "Aspermont was once the home of the League, yes. It... is not what it used to be. I can say it isn't like some cities at least, where gyms were torn down, or repurposed, or left to rot... it was, for a while. The League tried to stay afloat after the Rapture but things were such a mess so quickly. A lot of people were distrusting. Scared. And after the power... that was it, really. The city had no choice - the League shut down when the lab and everything else that had to do with pokemon did. But that's all known anyway, we all went to school, we both know this. League shutdown led to the rest of the gyms shutting down and the whole thing fell apart, and the region's been about as isolated from itself as it is the outside world. But I digress. I apologize, Cabrian. You aren't asking for a history lesson." Devereux smiles apologetically. The tall man has always had a habit of getting a little carried away with things he has interest in; but after everything... well. Not many people to hear it. Or care. Or who wouldn't be angered or annoyed, so best to curb it. Don't scare off the new friend, now.
"It survives. The old League building and the stadium are a historic site now, though its almost sad to call it that. It's on top of the hill, overlooking the old lab and campus. Aspermont's crowning glory, y'know? Only reason it hasn't been torn down is because of that, probably. I know I've heard rumors about gyms again, too - but if that's the case... think the entire building has a lot to do before it can be considered anything serviceable, much less salvageable, really... I'd like to see it, though. Maybe if we run into each other in Aspermont I can take you on the tour? If Arluin doesn't beat me to it, anyway. Did you ever see it when you'd come with him to visit?"

"I have no doubt that Ahihaka is ready for anything. I certainly would not tell her she couldn't do something." Cabrian smiles over at the little Litten and her new friend playing, taking a mental photograph. It's true, they've known their partners for just a few hours, but it feels longer than that. It feels a stronger bond than that. He takes such joy in seeing Admiral so happy, so content with his friend. He hopes there will be other pokemon friends for the wailmer. There must be, he's too sweet a whale not to make friends! Just as Ahihaka is too strong and confident to fail.
"She would do wonderfully, should you decide on it. If you do, call. I'll get Arluin and we'll come cheer you on. I know Admiral wouldn't want to miss it! But only if you choose. I know you'll do what works best for you and her. Wherever that takes you. And I don't mind the history, Devereux. I enjoy learning it, and you speak of it with passion. I've always found that something is most interesting when the one teaching you is truly passionate about the subject." And Devereux certainly is. With so much knowledge and passion for pokemon and their history in the region, he will certainly go very far. His brother will be so proud. He'll hear about it soon enough!
"I would like a tour. Arluin gave me a cursory overlook of things, but it was exceptionally cold that day, enough that he was shivering too. I'd like to get the full tour, certainly, if you're there and have the time to spare. Mayhaps the weather will remember I am a seaside weakling and be kind this time. You know I own a pair of boots because your brother was horrified to find me in sandals. I hope Ahihaka does better than I did the first time. Perhaps some socks?"

"You... you were wearing - you know what? I remember that!" Devereux shakes his head in disbelief, his smile somewhere between exasperated and delightfully amused. "I distinctly remember Arluin rambling at me and our father for almost half an hour after you'd retired for bed that first evening. He was so beside himself that you were going to catch hypothermia. Took me about as long to pick my jaw up off of the floor as it did for him to decide he was taking you winter shopping the first thing in the morning. He was so worried."
Devereux reaches out and nudges Cabrian's side playfully, grinning. "Smart a man as Loulou says you are? I couldn't believe my ears. Sandals, Cabrian. In Aspermont. Kyurem spare me. If I recall, Papa didn't let you go a second without a hot drink in your hand and a blanket or jacket within ten feet of you. And to think. That's the first time we'd properly met off-campus, too."
The teasing in his smile doesn't fade even a little bit, even if the mischievous tone of voice turns into a warmer one. "But to make up for that, I would love to take you on the full tour. It's a beautiful city, if you're willing to put up with my guide-tour rambling, at least. I would be delighted to make the time for it, yes? I think it'd be fun."
His gaze turns over to the two Pokemon, where Ahihaka is pawing playfully at Admiral and meowing at him while laying on his head. She rolls about - and eventually rolls off and onto the ground with a yelp. But this doesn't stop the little cat, who continues to paw and toy at her new pal.
"Ahi is a fire type, so I think she'd be alright... but. All the same, we'll make sure you have your proper boots, and we'll see how a little cat handles the snow in proper socks. Little mittens. And a little pom-pom hat for Admiral." Devereux nods, decisively, as if this is a fully settled and given plan. "And a little something for the rest of our pokemon too, hm? Any idea what type of pokemon you're looking for in particular?"

Cabrian keeps glancing at the floor, remembering the gentle tutting and worried attention he got on that trip to Aspermont. A kind invitation to spend a holiday with his best friend's family. He'd embarrassed himself so much...but he learned. "Yes, well. In my weak defense, I'd never owned a pair of winter boots in my life. Outside of my work shoes, my feet are only ever in sandals. That's...going to have to change. I expect my wardrobe is going to get bigger with all the traveling. The same for you though, yes? You have what you have from your time here, but you may still need something different, in different places. We'll both expand our horizons, hm?"
He is grateful that he'd been taken care of on his first trip, but he's very excited at the thought of getting a look at what he'd missed the first time. "I look forward to a tour. With a hat for Admiral. That...is going to be a large hat, but I desperately want to see it. Also Ahihaka in socks...I have seen a cat in socks before, and my Uncle laughed so hard he cried. Poor sweet girl might need to be recorded and then babied after the trauma of being giggled at."
It's so sweet, watching the two pokemon bond. It really is a comfort knowing that, no matter how far apart, Admiral will know he has a friend out there. Who enjoys bouncing, which must be a real bonus for him. He does wonder, maybe worry a little bit, at whether or not the distance will be distressing. The distance will happen regardless, he knows this. And they can always see and talk to each other on camera. Though Admiral might be tough to fit in frame.
"They really do like each other. I'm glad. I'm glad they both have a friend so quickly. I hope they'll both travel well, too - do let Admiral and I know how you're both doing, okay? Please do be careful out there. The world is big, all of a sudden, and you and I both know little of it first hand. Admiral and Ahihaka are friends now, I hope we are, too, however much we can be at this point. If you're busy, though, I'll reach out to Arluin for an update, and you can do the same, okay?"

Devereux catches onto the side glances real quick - as a man guilty of the same, of the inability to make eye contact in embarrassment. It's never a good thing. Or, at least he assumes this is what it is. Immediately he feels a bit guilty. He was only trying to lightly rib, but -- too far. Clearly, too far. They don't know each other that well yet. Shameful. But at the very least: Cabrian gives him an opportunity to turn the tables on himself, and eager to level the playing field, he takes it. "Well, sandals suit your fashion, no shame there."
He laughs, and shakes his head. "But gods, yes. I'll need new attire myself. Did Lou ever tell you about my first year at the university? He must have. I can't imagine he didn't. I had to go to the campus urgent care for heat exhaustion the first semester. Autumn is brisk in Aspermont, and winter is... well. And I didn't know how much more... temperate it is, here. I don't usually wear heavy coats, even back home - but this was somewhere new, so I brought the heaviest winter coat I had. It only snowed for two days that winter, and I overheated so badly that my roommate at the time had to call my brother to drag me to medical attention."
Devereux shakes his head and sighs with no small amount of amusement. His gaze looks over the Pokemon once more, before he grins sideways at Cabrian. "So, y'know. Moral of the story is we both get to be more fashionable because I have no high ground here, I'm just as bad. And they get to be more fashionable too. We'll have to send your uncle the video of when we offer Ahi her new apparel. And placate her when she inevitably hates me for it."
Worth it. It'll be so worth it. The idea of Ahihaka in little booties is enough to do Devereux in. She'll be furious, he can already tell. But Admiral in a hat.... and maybe a scarf... it would be so cute. Maybe the two can match.
"I'm glad too." Devereux stretches himself slightly, before turning his warm bright dimpled smile on his new friend. "I'll let you know how we're doing, if you let Ahi and I know how the two of you are, too. We'll fret if you don't, and then I'll set Lou on you for making me worry, and we both know how annoying he is." He loves his big brother. He swears. "Think by nature we have to be friends now, yeah? We started our journeys together. Had a trainer's traditional first battle together. You were already stuck with Arluin, but. Gotta be stuck with Devereux too, now. Sorry about that. He's tall and an idiot, but he does come with a pretty cute cat, so that's cool."
Ahihaka meows at the two of them, and Devereux crouches down, holding his hands out to the Pokemon. "Hey you two. Precious babies. You two excited to start your journeys? Hmm? Only been eighty years. I wonder if you even remember that time..."

"For what it's worth, Arluin only ever gushes about you. When you defended your PhD dissertation successfully, he fit 'my brother, the doctor' into every other sentence. He's very proud of you."
Despite being what one might describe as 'a little shit', Cabrian's best friend has always been unabashedly proud of his family and friends. Seeing Devereux tell Ahihaka how wonderful she is, he can see the family resemblance. Yes, he is happy to have a new friend like this one. And very happy his new friend Admiral will have a buddy of his own within reach, even far away. It's not been a day, but Cabrian is very sure these two pokemon are in for the long haul.
"Arluin can reach me, of course, but I will answer you, too. We are friends, and I always stay in touch with my friends. For whatever we may want to talk about." Cabrian answers his new friend's dimpled smile with a warm one of his own, content and happy in this moment. The worrisome nerves of starting his journey have mostly eased away. He's not alone now in this, nor is his pokemon.
Cabrian watches Ahihaka approaching Devereux, and turns to Admiral with a hand out. The wailmer does not hesitate in bouncing up to him, slightly booping Ahihaka's backside as he moves toward his trainer. "Oh buddy, careful now. Ahihaka, are you alright? Just a little bump, okay. I hope you'll forgive Admiral and I, we're learning just how big he is. But if he evolves one day, you are going to have a playground of a friend, little one. You two can keep in contact. And you'll help your new friends when we find new pokemon to travel with us, won't you?"
Admiral rolls gently into Cabrian's side, excited but clearly testing himself. "I knew you would, Admiral. I'm very proud of you. We'll show Ahihaka and Devereux how strong we get, right? And when we can, you'll see each other in person. You and I, Admiral, we have a date with the harbor at some point. I wonder if you'd remember? I suppose we'll see! Ahihaka, do you remember anything?"
