“I didn’t know he did that,” Devereux says quietly. There is a sweet, small smile on his face, his expression soft as he wiggles his fingers at his partner pokemon, trying to entice her over. “That makes me really happy. It means a lot to have him proud of me. He’s a jackass, but I love him.”
Devereux watches as Ahihaka continues to rub her cheek against Admiral, purring and willfully ignoring him completely. He exhales in amusement, unsure of what he expected, really. This little kitten and this spherical whale just gravitated to one another immediately. It’s wholesome, and precious, and he knows in that moment he will do whatever it takes to keep that friendship well and alive and taken care of.
“Thank you Admiral,” Devereux laughs. The wailmer’s bumping into Ahihaka has knocked her forward just a little, forcing her to actually take a few steps towards Dev so that he can actually start scritching her ears. She swats her fellow pokemon’s side with the tip of her tail playfully as he passes, but leans almost sideways into the rubbing fingers. Dev can feel the vibration of her purrs all the way up his wrist. “Gods, when he evolves, he’ll be a playground to nearly any pokemon. Enjoy your roundness while you have it, my handsome friend. I don’t think Ahi minds being bumped about, though. She seems quite happy to me. Aren’t you, cutie? You are, yes you are, precious sweet girl. Admiral will be a good team leader for his team friends, and so will you, and then you can whine to each other about all the shenanigans you get into, hm?”
Devereux has known this pokemon for a day and he would die for her.
Ahihaka looks up at Cabrian and mews pitifully. She tilts her head with an ear flick, but that’s about it, aside from her tail thwapping from side to side. “Is that a no, you don’t remember? Or are you lamenting your role as leader?” Devereux asks her. She’s quiet for another moment, before murring, bunting against Dev’s hand for more pets, instead. “Ah, I see. I suppose not, eh? That’s okay. Just means a hundred new memories to make right now in this new life. I wonder just how young you were when you were put into a ball for the last time, you’re so tiny…”
He scoops her up gently into his arm, and looks to Cabrian. “I really look forward to hearing how your visit with Admiral to the harbor goes. I bet he’s gonna love that – all that open water… just be careful. Season’s starting to change, so the water might be getting a bit colder down there. I’m sure there’s still folks swimming, but…” He clears his throat. “Anyway, you’re from there. You’d know better than me. But… I look forward to hearing how it goes. Just as I look forward to sharing about me and this little girl’s first trip out camping together.”

"I wonder where Admiral came from, too. If he was possibly from the waters I know. Hard to say. My great-grandpa dealt with wild wailmer, long ago, and was fond of them. I am thrilled I get to follow in his footsteps, in a way." Grandpa would be proud, he hopes. He must. To think, after all these years, after all this heartache and difficulty, Pokemon are back, and the first to Cabrian's hands is his great-grandfather's dearest. Some things surely must be fate.
"Yes, I think they will both be good leaders. I hope you both remember, lead with kindness and compassion. Kick their butts in training, right Ahihaka?" He's sure the little Litten will, but she is so excitable! She really is going to be wonderful. It spurs something relieving in his chest, to know that Devereux will have this fearless girl by his side. Lou will be pleased, too.
"I look forward to all your tales, I am sure Admiral does too. Please keep us in the loop. We'll do the same, of course, can't have Ahihaka worrying about her friend after all. And I look forward to seeing you when our paths cross again. I know we'll both have so much to share. Promise you'll be careful out there? I will as well. I wish the both of you all the luck and joy in the world. There's so much to see." Cabrian pauses to watch Admiral cooing at Ahihaka while he waits for her to get all the scritches she wants from her trainer, smiling warmly at the scene. Admiral really is just the sweetest pokemon alive. Cabrian makes a promise to himself, to protect his partner at all costs.
"Devereux, be careful. And have fun!"

"When you bring him to the waters, watch him, hm? I'm sure you will, but... see if he remembers anything -- the oceans are as old as time. Maybe he'll know?" Though... if Ahi doesn't seem to have any memory, maybe Admiral won't either. Devereux's lips quirk down slightly in thought, though it is only for a bare instant, easily missable. But... maybe he will. Maybe. There is always a chance of anything. "Wailmer are in your blood. Admiral is a good partner -- I am certain, certain... that you will do him proud, and do your great-grandfather proud, too. I am certain he will be."Were he a more... well, no. He certainly is sappy - a more corny person, maybe - he would be inclined to say something further. That he carries a legacy. That fate surely brought them together, that the very gods above ordained Cabrian and Admiral to be together. That this was simply how it was meant to be. A trainer and his Pokemon, continuing a legacy nearly a hundred years lost in a new chapter, a new bond, a new lifetime. But while Devereux maybe is that corny... perhaps not to Cabrian, a man he has just properly befriended and who doesn't know him well... yet. Maybe eventually. "Of course," Dev says with a soft expression, wrinkling his nose at the little cat curled in his arm fondly. She mewls loudly in Cabrian's direction. "We lead with the goodness of our hearts and uplift our teammates, don't we, sweetheart? Yes. And we show compassion - like the compassion of keeping our friends in the loop." He sets Ahi down to return to her eternal affection of Admiral, watching her simply rub her cheek against him and purr, purr, purr, while she marks and claims him hers as she says her goodbye-for-nows. As this happens, Devereux heaves a soft little sigh. The noise is reluctant and unwilling, and his body seems a bit stiffer too as he finally reorganizes his paperwork and information, making sure it is in order before he slings his messenger bag back onto his shoulder. "Well," he says finally, and smiles brightly at Cabe, as much as he is capable of. "I suppose that, that in mind, perhaps it is time to get started. I wish you the best of luck and happiness too, alright? We'll be careful as we can. You too, though -- we'll see each other again soon. And we'll have a lot of new stories to tell. It's a whole new world." He adjusts his bag again, and clicks his tongue gently at Ahihaka. "Alright Ahi, its time." Her parting is not without resistance, as she seems hesitant to go, but eventually with a final bunt, rubbing her nose against Admiral's chin, she backs away and winds between Devereux's feet with each step. The two make it for a few steps until Dev seems to give up on something, and stops to scoop Ahihaka back up into his arm to carry. And then, he carries on until he's made it mostly across the room. Pausing in front of the Laboratory main doors, Devereux stops, takes a deep breath, and grins. Turning back around, he grins at Cabe and waves with his free hand. "You too! I swear, Cabrian - we will see each other again soon. Have a good time out there!"He has no more said that than his heart feels almost frothy with joy, pounding with excitement. Here they are - two trainers on the cusp of destiny. As the Lab doors slide shut behind him, as Devereux's profile disappears down the road into the horizon, he laughs happily and without abandon. And so... the adventure begins!
