Jess was well bundled in her winter clothes. Long underwear, sweater, jacket, scarf, thick snow pants with a heavy linen skirt to tie it all together, and finally her heavy boots. Currently, she was holding her mittens in between her teeth and putting some snow booties on Fearghas and a little hat to keep his ears warm. She would have done it earlier, but it wasn't nearly as cold! Once she was done, she put her mittens back on and put the egg case back on. It was a saddle-bag style container that was keeping the egg nice and warm. Takara had expressed the importance of keeping an eye on it, but he seemed a little disappointed she brought it along. "Don't look at me like that! You said to watch it!" Jess said, crossing her arms. "Yeah, but not bring it along so it'll smash into pieces if you slip..." Takara smiled back and shrugged. "Ah, well, let's go!"Jess grumbled and followed behind. Takara was in his boots, cargo pants, his usual tank top, a scarf, and a snow jacket. "How are you not cold?" she asked. He shrugged and winked. This man was basically a walking heater. Takara overheated very quickly in winter gear and often wore the bare minimum. Thankfully, Shri wasn't out or she'd be trying to force him into something warmer. At least he had his cane, outfitted with a spiked bottom to help him along the slippery ground. "Ya know, when you said you'd take me out to meet new pokemon I did not think it'd be this! I imagined a nice picnic near Summerhill...""What gave you that impression?""You said it'd be nice and fun," Jess pouted. "This is cold and miserable." She took off her glasses, wiping off the haze from her breath. Ugh! The cold was awful. "Yeah," she heard Takara say, "but I can't do this in Summerhill."Jess slipped her glasses back on and said, "Do wha-"The snowball slammed against her face, making her teeter back. Fearghas began to bark angrily, rushing at Takara and running circles around him. The little puppy was howling with rage. How dare! Assault! Assault on his trainer! Jail for Takara! Jail for 1,000 years! Takara dropped a snowball on him, burying the tiny puppy and making him have to dig his way out. Jess quickly made her own and threw it, hitting Takara square in the jaw. Fearghas cheered. Retribution!! They laughed as they continued to walk up the path. "Seriously, though, I know a great place up here. A nice little look-out I think you'll like. And who knows! We may meet some pokemon on the way.""I'd much prefer if we didn't. Fearghas is good enough for me, thank you." Jess crossed her arms, looking down at the puppy. She also looked at the egg. "Do you think it'll be okay?"Takara nodded. "Yeah, just don't drop it too far. It's a reinforced case but... ya know."Before long, they had made it to a little picnic area for when spring melted some of the snow. It was abandoned for now, but Takara quickly took the chance to sit down, putting his leg onto the length of the bench. He made a face as he moved it, leaning onto his cane and resting his chin on his hands. Jess put her egg down on the table and peered at it. Every now and then it would shake but... no such luck with cracking yet. "So... what now?""Now," Takara said, "you go wander over there and see if you find a pokemon. Fearghas will keep you safe and if anything bad happens I have Shri, Bast, and Orion ready to go.""You're not gonna come with me?"He gave her a leveled look. Jess blushed and gave an embarrassed chuckle. "Sorry, Tara. Rest your leg. We'll keep on hiking once you feel up to it."He winked. "Get going, you! And have fun!" He looked down at Fearghas. "Take good care of her and howl if you need me."The puppy wagged his tail and barked eagerly, Takara's snowball attack completely gone from the puppy's mind now. He ran off, Jess nervously following behind. My two legs are broken, but look at me dance!

Jessica began to walk and then instantly froze as she saw a rock floating across the path. Her whole body became rigid as she watched this thing, Fearghas sniffing curiously and giving a little yip as he walked up. The Carbink turned and looked at him, not seeming to be bothered by the constant sniffing. The two seemed to be getting along okay. "Jess? Jess, breathe. It's just a Carbink," Takara said, sitting just five feet away. "They're peaceful pokemon. Use your dex and find out more about it.""I don't think I can move," she whispered back, teeth clattering from fear. "What if it kills me?"Takara clicked his tongue and his Rotom phone sprung to life, doing a quick scan of the Carbink. "It's low level, looks like its primary moves are Tackle and Harden? Can also learn Guard Split, Smack Down, Flail, Ancient Po-""SMACK DOWN!?" Jess cried, looking back at Takara. "So it can kill me!" She turned back to look at the floating rock, ready to call Fearghas back, but the puppy's tail was wagging as he seemed to be very engaged in a conversation. He barked and the Carbink's jewels glowed along with tinkling chirps. "What are they doing?""Talking." Takara winced as he stood up, muttering a curse under his breath as he came over, the egg case now over his shoulder. Too dangerous to leave it alone least a wild pokemon got curious. He leaned on his cane as he stood next to Jess, his relaxed presence helping her breathe. "While we have trouble understanding them, pokemon can understand us and each other just fine. If anything, I read that pokemon don't process language the same way we do, but feel our... energies? Vibes? Shri, for example, seems to understand my words but she is capable of seeing and understanding auras. The research on pokemon communication was limited even before the Rapture, but does she understand language or auras or both? No one knows...""So those glowing gems and noise is Carbink talking?""Must be. I see no mouth.""How does it eat?""It doesn't. Carbink are formed deep underground under intense pressure and high heat according to the pokedex, so this pokemon is basically a living diamond! Isn't that so cool?"Jess shivered, but not from the cold. "That's so... strange...""Fearghas seems to like them," Takara chuckled, watching the two pokemon continue to converse. "Pokemon are good judges of character, Jess. I don't think you have anything to worry about with this Carbink. How about you go over and try to catch it?""Like... throw a pokeball?" she asked, thinking about the pokeballs Dev had given her as part of her trainer kit. They were standard issue. Takara said she had to get used to using what was on the market and not the luxury balls Salve Co. produced. It would be unfair compared to other trainers who had to get all their things at the store, according to him. And they had a responsibility to project the values they wanted Salve Co. to have, after all. "If you want. Or you can offer it to come along with you. That's what I usually do. I don't like fighting and then capturing, I prefer more peaceful methods. But you do you!" He nudged her shoulder with his own. "Go say hi!"Jess walked up, trying to relax as she knelt down near the Carbink. She looked at it as the little floating rock turned to look at her in turn, giving a chiming call of greeting. Fearghas ran up to Jess and jumped into her arms, giving her chin a little lick as he barked at the Carbink, as if he was showing them his trainer. "Hi... Carbink? I-I'm Jess..." she looked back at Takara who gave her a grin and a thumbs up. "Um... Fearghas and I were out for a little walk and you seem to both get along okay? I think..." Fearghas gave a yip of agreement. Jess reached into her pocket and put a pokeball on the ground. "If you wanted to, you can... Takara, what do I say?"He chuckled and walked over. "Carbink, my friend Jess here is very new at this, I apologize for any confusion. We use pokeballs to take our friends with us. If you decide to, you can tap the ball and it'll zap you inside and 'register' you to Jessica's trainer ID. Meaning you are under her care and protection. But if you don't want to do that, you can float away and we'll leave you be to enjoy your day." He gave a smile. "The choice is, of course, completely yours!"Takara gripped Jessica's shoulder slightly and gave her a wink. They had talked in length that pokemon didn't have to decide to go with you. They had their own full lives in the wild and you had to respect that, no matter how much you wanted the pokemon to join you on your journey. Jess held Fearghas tightly as the puppy's tail wagged. The Carbink floated towards the pokeball, but several chiming calls came from higher up the mountain. The Carbink spun around and returned the call. It then faced Jess, gave a little bow (or as close as a rock could) and then floated away to join its friends. Jess picked up the pokeball and stood up with Fearghas in her arms. The puppy gave a bark of goodbye, tail still wagging. She looked to Takara. "Win some, lose some?" she said with a little smile. He nodded. Jess looked at him carefully and then down at his leg. He was keeping all the weight off of it. "Do you want to sit back down?""Nah, I can keep going for a bit. I want to get to that lookout point before we head back. It's just another mile.""MILE? Takara! You're going to hurt yourself!""I'll be fiiiine," he said as he started to walk. "Come on, slowpoke!"With a worried look, she followed him, but took the egg case back to take some extra weight off. They continued to move across the cold ground, but it was beautiful out here with the town in the distance. If only there wasn't snow everywhere, but they were lucky it wasn't a blizzard! The path steadily got steeper and she quickly took Takara's arm to help keep him steady. Before too long, they made it to the lookout, the mile having passed without incident. Jessica smiled as she saw the beautiful view of Mt. Veerie in the far distance, the lower part of Route 16 below, the river they had crossed over, and the forest further south. She helped Takara sit down on one of the benches under the covered awning. He sighed and quickly propped up his leg with a hiss. "I told you not to push yourself...""Worth it." Takara shrugged off his backpack and took out a thermos and two travel cups. He poured them both some tea. Jess sat down and sipped the tea gingerly. Fearghas was sniffing around, thankfully being cautious of the edge as he rooted his nose through the snow. He soon came back with a stick. He sat down by Jessica's feet and happily chewed his new toy. My two legs are broken, but look at me dance!

Action: Wild Fletchling  appeared! Fearghas battles! Jess attempts a capture! Day || Clear || Route 16 || Pokeballs || No Repels
As they settled down, Jess set the table for a quick lunch, digging into her bag for what she had packed. Sandwiches, muffins, and little to-go salads with little packets of dressing for a side. She took out a little plastic bag for the trash can and pinned it under the thermos after refilling both of their cups. She also took out some of Takara's pain medication. "Oh, bless you," he said as he grabbed the bottle, taking two pills out, and popping them into his mouth. He took them with his bottle of water and quickly ate a bite of his sandwich. Jess smiled and also served Fearghas some pokemon food she had gotten from the lab. One day she'd try and find his favorite type of good, but for now this was perfectly balanced. She took out another bowl and poured some water from his very own water bottle. The trio enjoyed the weather and the view, the cold seeming to be far away with the warm company and tea. That was, until a flash of orange darted by, stealing Jess' muffin. She stood up in a panic. "H-hey!" she shouted, looking startled as she traced the path the bird had taken. It had landed a little ways away, pecking at the muffin. "T-that's not yours!" she said, her voice quickly losing any amount of anger as the bird trilled angrily at her. Takara chuckled. "That's a Fletchling. Usually they peck anything that enters their territory, but that one has a vendetta against that muffin.""This isn't funny, Takara! It was inches from attacking me!"He hummed, not having the same amount of worry as his friend. "Hey! This is a great chance to battle a little! Perfect reasoning, too. Teach it a lesson, Jess!"She froze. "B-battle? How do I do that?""Remember that info you got from Dev?" Takara explained as he put balsamic vinegar dressing on his salad and then shook the container. "His known moves are in there. Pokemon can only remember a certain number of them until they forget, but they can always remember some later on. If I recall, his are Leer, Tackle, and Lick." Jess stared at him blankly. Takara sighed. She had clearly not done her reading. "Leer is a move that makes a pokemon lower its guard by the attacker being intimidating. Usually through a sort of glare. Tackle is a damaging move where the attacker charges forward and literally tackles the opponent. And Lick is also a damaging move, but it can cause paralysis. Lick won't have any affect against Fletchling, though. Its a normal/flying type so its immune to ghost type moves. Fearghas is immune to ghost type moves, too, as a fun fact for you. So I would suggest to use Leer or Tackle first."Fearghas barked and ran at attention, waiting for orders! Takara winked at Jess. "He's waiting for you to tell him what to do! So, time to be a trainer! Lead him to victory while I enjoy my salad."It was an information overload, but Jess understood the basics. She stared at Takara for a moment while he ate and then looked to Fearghas. She slowly moved away from the table and held onto one of the poles of the awning. "F-Fearghas!" she called, her puppy giving a yip in return. "Use Tackle!"The Lillipup charged forward, his snow booties helping to give him the traction he needed to slam into the Fletchling with his entire body--there wasn't a whole lot of it, but he still made an impact! The bird quickly rose, through, wings flapping as it began to mercilessly Peck at Fearghas! The puppy gave a startled yip in response, trying to run away but the Fletchling followed close behind. "AH! Why is it doing that!?""Well, you did hurt it," Takara looked at Fearghas running away. The snow could be used to blind the Fletchling long enough to get distance and tackle again, sending it into a nearby rock with a proper aim. Follow up with a Leer and then dodge from a the Pecks... "Hm... you'll figure it out.""You are not being very helpful!" Jess cried, looking back at Fearghas who was still fleeing for his life. Her poor puppy! "Fearghas! Tackle again!"The puppy gave a bark and tried to round to tackle but got pecked right on the top of his head. He yipped again and kept running. Jess, overcome with worry, concern, and a lack of common sense, grabbed her bag, zipped it shut, and charged at the two pokemon. She slung her bag and smacked the Fletchling right out of the sky and into the snow! "TACKLE!" she cried as Fearghas gave a bark, charged forward, and dove head first into the snow to smack the bird while it was down. The Fletchling let out a cry and quickly flew up again, looking incredibly angry. It dove for Jess this time, pecking with pure rage as she held up her bag to protect herself. Takara watched all of this while munching on his salad and sipping his tea. He recognized that Jess wasn't in any real danger here, though she would probably disagree. Fletchling was not a Spearow, after all, and its moves were much weaker given its beak wasn't as sharp. They were lucky it wasn't an evolved one. Had that been the case, that thing would have been Aura Sphered off the mountain by now. That didn't make Jess' fear any less real, so Takara got up, grabbed his cane, walked over, and bonked the Fletchling on the head. It fell into the snow. "I'd try a pokeball before it comes to," he said. Jess hit him with her bag and he laughed. "What?""WHAT!? I WAS BEING ATTACKED!""That's why you don't get involved in the fight, Jess." He reached into her bag and pulled out one of the pokeballs, handing it to her. "Give it a shot."She grumbled and dropped the ball on the stunned bird. It was zapped inside and began to roll... the trio watched, two with baited breath and one eagerly wanting to get back to his lunch. My two legs are broken, but look at me dance!

The ball rolled... and rolled... then boom! The Fletchling burst out of the ball, gave Jess another firm peck--this time on the head--and flew off, abandoning its lunch. "Ow..." she said, looking at Takara with a glare. "That wasn't funny!"He chuckled. "You weren't in any danger. It just pecked you now, right? Then it left. You're fine. Fearghas showed it a thing or two, too." The puppy yipped in agreement. They returned to the table and Jess sighed. Takara slid his muffin across the table to her. She gave him a smile and split it in half to share it with him. They returned to their lunch, finishing it in peace. They spent another half hour there, enjoying the view and chit chatting while Takara inspected Fearghas for injuries, spraying him with a potion before they started to walk down the mountain again, back to the main route instead of this off shoot. While they walked, Takara discussed some simple battle theory, explaining how he would have approached that battle if he had a Lillipup with the same moves in his party. Jess nodded while they walked, slowly absorbing it. The spot the bird had pecked hurt only for a while and then it was as good as new after, so maybe there was something to these 'rules of combat' Takara was discussing. "Pokemon usually don't involve humans in attacks. They can still hurt you because they are wild animals, but that's why we have our pokemon. They defend us, but we have to help them. Usually, if your pokemon is defeated a wild pokemon will determine they won and leave unless you have another pokemon on your team. By interfering directly, you are saying you are a combatant, too. But I think the Fletchling realized that Fearghas is young and you are a new trainer. Pokemon are very smart!""Oh, I see... so it only pecked me because I got involved... so, you're saying I should have had Fearghas use the snow?""Exactly! He's decently fast, if you ordered him to charge faster and then scrape up snow you could have blinded the Fletchling for a moment, gotten distance, and tackle again. A good aim could have sent it to a rock, stunning it long enough to act again."Jess nodded. She felt better now that they were walking down the mountain, Fearghas fearlessly leading the way. They were almost back to the main route by now, but Takara had to stop and sit on a rock for a moment. Jess gave him a worried look. "Pain meds wearing off?""No, they're working, but its bothering me a lot more than usual today... might not be able to be in the cold as long as I used to, I guess."She sat down next to him and Fearghas ran up, giving Takara's hand a little lick. She position the egg case on her lap, wrapping her arms around it. Another little shake. "Take your time! I got no where to be."He smiled back at her. "Thanks, Jess." Action: A wild Cubchoo  appears! Jess tries a capture! Day || Clear || Route 16 || Pokeballs || No Repels
As they sat, Jess saw something out of the corner of her eye. A little bear approaching, walking along the trail down the mountain. Except this thing had a giant dangle of snot coming out of its nose. She made a surprised face and nudged Takara who looked up at it. "Is it sick?" she asked. He took out his Rotom phone and scanned the pokemon. "...Hm... no. Apparently if it doesn't have that gross little thing then its sick.""Don't call it gross, that's rude!""Jess, that thing looks gross to me, I am sorry." They looked back at the bear. It was closer now, studying them carefully before deciding it was safe to go on pass. Fearghas jumped up with a happy yip and went to go welcome this pokemon. They seemed to strike up a conversation. Jess watched, wondering how you could tell which pokemon were okay with battling and which ones weren't. She looked to Takara and he shook his head. This one, apparently, was not going to be right to battle. Fearghas brought the little bear cub over, as if introducing his new friend to Jess and Takara. They both smiled politely at the little pokemon, but Takara's eyes scanned the horizon for a parent. He knew enough about this place to know bears were common and a baby did not often wander around without a parent nearby. Jess was less worried as she took a little bit of the leftover muffin and shared it with the little bear cub. Because of this, Takara kept that fun fact to himself. "Hi, cutie!" she said with a smile, "It's nice to meet you! We were just about to wrap up our hike today." The Cubchoo nibbled on the muffin and gave a happy smile and a little noise of thanks. Jess fished a pokeball out of her bag and held it out. "If you want, you can come with us and play with Fearghas every day! I'm sure he'd like to have a friend with him! But its your choice, cutie. You can do whatever it is you would like! You are welcome to say no."She glanced to Takara for approval and he nodded. Perfect. In fact, he was impressed! She didn't look nervous at all in this moment although he was. He decided to also keep the fact that if this pokemon sneezed and that snot got on anything it'd cause frostbite to himself. That would ruin such a sweet moment like this even if that bear was... well... Takara schooled his expression perfectly but he wouldn't be caught dead trying to catch this thing. But whatever made Jess happy. This was a big moment for her. She was acting without being prompted, making her own choices about how to interact with pokemon, so Takara would support her as best he could. My two legs are broken, but look at me dance!
