Professor Yew "Sebastian Aldenberg?" It wasn't exactly difficult to identify the man in question, since he was the only person in the waiting room, but the professor figured she'd ask just in case. The waiting room was newly-furnished, only recently prepared as decades-old plans for the return of Pokemon became a reality -- long after most of the planners had given up. The chairs were comfortable, and there were quite a few of them, which made Sebastian look a little lonely as he waited. He also looked a little familiar, and the professor frowned slightly, trying to place him. Had they gone to school together? "Come with me, please," she said, holding the door open. If things got busier, she'd presumably delegate this task, at least most of the time. But so few trainers had come by the lab to get Pokemon so far that she wanted to personally meet every one. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

Sebby was quite nervous about all of this if he was going to be honest with himself. He was completely unsure of why exactly he'd chosen to volunteer for something like this. Even if it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, one of the first pokemon to be given out, he was still doubting why he'd done it. Especially sitting in the admittedly comfortable room, one of his legs bouncing rapidly. His eyes locked onto the professor when she entered, and he forced his leg to still, and nodded nervously as he stood up.
Once standing he grasped his necklace in one hand and approached to pass through the door with a polite, albeit mouse-like, "thank you." Even though he'd been working here for a time, he would never get used to all of these people that he didn't know, and didn't know him. He almost preferred it that way, but it also made him so much more wary. But that was silly. They were colleagues and he was doing important work here today. Sebastian just hoped that he wouldn't back out.

Professor Yew Noticing how nervous Sebastian seemed, Professor Yew smiled at him as she led him back down a corridor and into a simple, spacious room where two chairs sat next to a large device that held six Pokeballs. Where had she seen him before? "I'm Professor Victoria Yew. I am the official Trainer Liaison here, so I'll be your contact if you need anything from the Lab."She sat down in one of the chairs, gesturing Sebastian to the other, and turned to the device. "We have six Pokemon available for you to choose from today: Remoraid, Aipom, Sneasel, Litwick, Smeargle, and Ferroseed. Are you familiar with those Pokemon?"As she listed off each species, she scrolled through their images on the device's screen, which showed the Pokemon and their genders. Meanwhile, in the area that held the Pokeballs themselves, a light came on under each ball as the screen showed the Pokemon inside. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? | | | | | | Remoraid | Aipom | Sneasel | Litwick | Smeargle | Ferroseed | female | female | female | male | female | male |

At her smile, Sebastian gave a hesitant one in return and relaxed somewhat. It was fine, it was just a colleague. He sat down in the offered chair nervously, running his thumb along the smooth surface of the charm at the end of the necklace and taking a deep breath. "Yes, Professor. The Jet pokemon, The Long Tail pokemon, the Sharp Claw pokemon, the Candle pokemon, the Painter pokemon, and the Thorn Seed pokemon." He recited, getting more quiet as he recited each one to himself, and he settled further in the seat momentarily. Sebby's mind immediately ran through all of their old pokedex entries, reciting the textbook knowledge to himself to help make a decision, and to help keep himself from being too incredibly nervous.
Ok, Remoraid are generally pretty docile, but I don't think I could protect myself with one, nor do I plan on going to somewhere where she'd be the most useful... Aipom tend to be pretty friendly, but also kinda energetic and I'm not sure I can keep up with her, although she'd be kinda nice if I wanna try and investigate the forest like I want to. Sneasel are kinda aggressive... I don't know if I can handle having one, but she'd also be pretty strong and it'd be nice to pay homage to home.... At that though, Seb's hand tightened on his necklace. Litwick can be kinda mischievous but they're also adorable and it'd get pretty strong. And Ferroseed... Are literally just angry pokeys. Strong angry pokeys. But angry pokeys nonetheless... Ok. Objectively speaking, I need a pokemon that can protect me while I'm doing research in the field... Thinking about that forest... I know we've been wondering about it for a while. I could do Aipom, Sneasel can also climb, and Ferroseed are grass types so it'd be more at home. But Litwick would have a type advantage... And is cute... But also when it's young like it will be it'll be pretty weak... And I'd be pretty shameful to dad if I came home with a fire type and not an ice type...
(OOC: He's definitely choosing Sneasel)

Professor Yew "Yes," the professor said, impressed and letting her tone show it. Not many people knew much about Pokemon these days ... Oh! That was why he looked so familiar. "You work here, don't you?"
She felt a little embarrassed now that she hadn't recognized him earlier, but she tried to hide it. He seemed pretty preoccupied looking over the Pokemon, anyway. Of course he would be; Professor Yew remembered how much she'd agonized over her own choice of Pokemon -- she'd put in almost a week of research before settling on Absol. She unconsciously touched the Pokeball at her belt now just thinking about it. After that, she could hardly expect Sebastian to make the choice in five minutes. "Take all the time you need," she said kindly. "I know it's a big decision."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? // edit: almost forgot! Seb gave an embarrassed smile and ducked his head a bit after a momentary jolt from being brought back to reality. "Ah, yeah, I keep to myself most of the time when I'm not working, so it's ok..." He mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Besides I think we're in different departments." he quietly mentally delved back into his debate after this, taking another deep breath.
"But I think... I may know which one I want" he said after yet another steadying breath. He knew what his father would do, and for once... he wanted to make dad kinda proud. In a way. "I think I'll go with the Sneasel." He said with as much firmness as he could. Even if it ended up being... kinda meek and trailed off just a little bit at the end. But it was the best decision. And it'd help him test his knowledge! Especially with such a... kinda violent choice. He was honestly doubting it, but he'd already said it so that was that.

Professor Yew The professor nodded, simply grateful that she had finally placed Sebastian. Not knowing where she recognized him from had been bothering her quite a bit, as she prided herself on her people skills -- important to a liaison position. "What made you decide to come in and get a Pokemon?"
Of course, Professor Yew could understand the choice, being one of the first people to get her own Pokemon. She wasn't sure what department Sebastian was in, but she knew a Pokemon could help with many aspects of work at the Lab. Maybe not a Sneasel, though. It seemed like a slightly incongruous pick for Sebastian, but Professor Yew wasn't rude enough to question it. Instead she picked up Sneasel's Pokeball and handed it to Sebastian. "Why don't you let it out here, so you can meet your new Pokemon?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

"I've been switched to... Actually I think your department. But I'm going to be doing field research." He said, glancing down at where he'd automatically accepted the pokemon's ball. It was cold and smooth under his hand, and did fit just right. Kinda naturally. Maybe... this wouldn't be that bad. He was already doubting his own choice, but it... should be fine.
He nodded hesitantly to bringing the pokemon out and glanced at all the delicate equipment. Maybe... he shouldn't do it here, but it should be safe... right? Maybe. Well, if the professor said it, he might as well follow instructions. So after a moment of remembering how he'd been told to open the pokeball, he let out the sneasel in a glimmer of red light that coalesced into the dark blue creature. That looked incredibly disoriented, and yawned as it looked around at both humans in the room.
Then it promptly walked up to Seb and began to climb him. Which caused him to yelp in startled, then wince because she was using those claws that made her good at climbing things. They just. Also hurt. She didn't seem overly aggressive yet, at least, just curious, a lot confused, and wanting to know more. And this human definitely had her pokeball, so he got to be climbed.

Professor Yew The professor smiled broadly. "Oh, excellent. I'll be doing some field research as well -- I'm sure I'll see you out there. And, of course, you're always welcome to our resources here ... But you know that; you work here."
Presumably that also meant that Sebastian knew how to get in touch with the professor. She could skip a lot of the usual spiel. Professor Yew watched with interest when the Sneasel appeared. She rather expected it to take off racing around the room, but instead it just yawned and ... made a beeline for Sebastian. The professor reached for her Pokeball, just in case, but the Sneasel didn't seem interested in attacking, just in climbing. With those claws, though, that still put Sebastian in a bit of a pickle. "Do you want any help?"how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

He winced again and then gave a nod to the help, looking down at this pokemon as she climbed up and then latched herself to his chest to be eye level with him for a moment. Took his glasses, put them on herself and then jumped off. He 'oof'd' and blinked rapidly. Well. Now he couldn't see anymore. Uhm. this was a problem. At least he was sitting down. The pokemon proceeded to jump over to the ground in front of the professor and attempt to begin climbing again, but now with slightly less coordination due to wearing glasses. That wasn't the best call on her part, but she'd wanted them.

Professor Yew "All right, let me see what -- " the professor began, approaching with a hand on her Absol's Pokeball -- but she decided to see if she could handle this herself instead of escalating the situation by introducing another Pokemon. Then the Sneasel turned its attention to her. "Hey, wait, no!"Those claws hooked into the professor's pristine business slacks ( note to self: wear more durable clothes around Pokemon) even as she tried to take a step back. Reaching for the Sneasel, the professor tried to grab it under the arms and pick it up, hoping to offer it a way to get the altitude it clearly wanted without damaging her clothes or her skin. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

When Professor Yew touched the pokemon, she looked up in confusion for a moment, locking eyes with the woman. Tilted her head slightly with a confused vocalization and gripped harder with her claws to keep herself in place. The Sneasel did a tiny wriggle to attempt to get the hands free, unsure of what this human was doing. Nyo, leave da sides aloooneee!! Seb looked on anxiously, unsure if he should step in, or if she had this. Or if he should just return the Sneasel to her ball and try this again later. Although at least he had hope, she didn't appear to be aggressive yet. Just curious and cat-like.

Professor Yew "All right, no picking you up, then," Professor Yew said, releasing the Sneasel as she attempted to get free. "I'm not just going to let you climb me, though. I paid good money for these clothes; I don't want them full of claw-holes."Well, she wouldn't mind so much getting a few holes in her lab coat -- the Lab provided those, and they were meant to protect street clothes against messes. And, now that Pokemon were back, rambunctious creatures. But her pants and shirt were ... not as practical as she might have liked. And the professor also had to worry about the tablet she wore strapped to her, which hung against her hip, towards her back. Crouching down, the professor switched her attention to the Sneasel's claws, trying to gently unhook them from the fabric. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?

The pokemon flexed her claws and then released them, only to climb further up the professor. Not that she had much to climb up now that Yew was crouching. The Sneasel looked her in the eyes and made a vocalization between that of a weasel and a cat, a kind of chittering squeak kind of noise. Then she unhooked all of her claws and bounced off the professor to go back to analyzing and circling Sebastian, seeming to be sizing him up almost. Still didn't appear hostile, but the professor and Seb both knew that sometimes pokemon could change at the drop of a pin. At least, some. According to the books.

Professor Yew The professor let out a little sigh of relief when the Pokemon's attention turned back to Sebastian. All right, that hadn't gone so bad ... Though she did regard the dents in her pants with a bit of dismay. That was fine, though. She'd get more durable pants. "Why don't you try talking to her?" the professor suggested. Her own Absol was a serious sort who tended to regard the professor's words with great gravity. Somehow, Professor Yew didn't think this Sneasel would be as good a listener, but still, it was worth seeing how she'd respond to Sebastian. "She seems curious. Pokemon are quite intelligent; records -- and my own experience -- show that they respond to spoken language."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced?
