❂ Rebecca Cardinal "Are you ready to come out, Galla?"No one ever believed Rebecca when she told them that Galla's Pokeball would move or grow warm in her hand on occasion, giving her a sign that the Pokemon inside really did listen and care what she was saying. Even her parents tended to give each other a look when she talked about it, that "oh, here goes Rebecca again" look that she'd gotten to know so well. So she'd stopped talking about it. But now Rebecca knew the Pokeball rocked in her hand as she held it in front of her. She took one last look at the screen of the phone in her other hand, which displayed the Pokemon Laboratory's official notice that it was safe to remove Pokemon from their Pokeballs once again. She'd been checking it over and over again all day, trying to really feel that it was real. Every time she looked away and thought about actually letting Galla out, she'd start wondering if she'd imagined it, or misread it, or -- well, anything else that would have turned releasing Galla from a victory into a catastrophe. She was, quite honestly, terrified; if she hadn't been, she would have gotten this over with this morning. Well, not gotten it over with; this was one of the highlights of her life so far, and she intended to savor every moment, to try and imprint it all firmly in her memory. But she was, also, terrified. If anything went wrong ... She couldn't bear the thought of somehow losing Galla, her primary -- sometimes only -- friend and companion for all these years. If the Lab was wrong, and it wasn't actually safe to open Pokeballs ... She checked the bulletin again. No, it was fine. It was time. She couldn't delay any longer; she'd just drive herself crazy. Besides, she felt the ball rock again: Galla was getting impatient. The Torchic wanted to come out, and Rebecca owed it to her to let her. Rebecca sat in the dirt at the base of an ancient dead tree in her parents' front yard, a tree that she'd climbed many times as a child, pretending to be a perching bird. It was a bit of a special spot for her, so she'd chosen it for this, an almost ritual occasion. She held Galla's Pokeball in her hand and carefully, holding her breath, pressed the button. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me "Not so fast, Eon," Mya said evenly as she walked along the road. To where? She didn't know, but she wanted to see the world. Perhaps Eon wanted the same. The little Bagon charged forward, as if testing out his legs and getting his bearings again. Sometimes he would turn around and shout at Mya before running back to her then back away again. He already tripped once, scaring Mya half to death. But the little guy was tough. Turns out that big ol' helmet on his head was a helmet. Hard as rock.
She looked out across the farm lands. When she was younger, her and her parents would sometimes come here during caravan trips. Hard to believe she was here alone. No, not alone. Hard to believe she was here babysitting a Pokemon that seemed just as excited as she was, although Eon sure did show it more.
Looking up and head, Mya hummed. "Looks like someone else wanted to enjoy the fresh air. Eon, stay close!" She felt satisfied when the little Bagon ran over to her, grumbling slightly but keeping pace. She didn't know if, whoever had this Bagon before, had taught it anything, but Eon was responsive to small requests. That was good. Her eyes went back to the stranger. Didn't seem harmful, just sitting under a tree. No harm there.

Charmian Lovel A loveball was kept secure in Charmian's simple leather choker as she trotted down the dusty road. This pink pokeball that contained her pokemon, a finicky igglybuff named Miss Chu-- who minutes earlier she had quite literally sung until she passed out, the little creature's face becoming ruddier & puffier by the moment as its underdeveloped vocal chords struggled to convey 80 years worth of pent up passion. Charmian rolled her eyes, smacking on a wad of chewy algae, at the thought. Her pokemon was cute, for sure, and she was lucky to have one at all.. but it wasn't exactly the most well behaved. The woman halted as a flash of light caught her attention far ahead. A youthful looking girl in ugly clothes sat in the dust of someone's yard- another person with an uglier little pokemon stood between the two of them. All of this, Charmian took in, a thought coming to the forefront of her mind as she looked on with mild confusion: that light could only be one thing, a pokeball releasing its charge. Not one, but two new trainers stood before her. She had walked all the way from Mistveil to this raggedy place without encountering one. Smiling, she raises a hand, pigtails bouncing behind her as she bounds forwards towards the bluenette, completely ignoring the dark haired stranger and their bulbous, disgusting pokemon.
"Hey! Girl!" She called, kicking up a trail behind her.
Loving you was never an option!

❂ Rebecca Cardinal The flash of light resolved itself into a Torchic, and Rebecca almost cried. Galla was bigger than she'd expected -- oh, she'd memorized the Torchic measurements provided in her books, but that was different than actually seeing Galla. The Torchic looked around, blinking a bit in the sunlight. Then a call from nearby broke into Rebecca's thoughts. She looked up to see two people standing nearby, plus a Pokemon -- a flash of annoyance ran through her. This was a special moment; she didn't want anyone else to ruin it. Why couldn't people just leave her alone? She decided to believe that the pink-haired girl's call was directed at the other trainer, not herself, and turned her full attention back to Galla, who had finished looking around and was now reciprocating Rebecca's attention. The Torchic took a hesitant step towards her, tilting its head in a way that Rebecca read as questioning. "It's all right," Rebecca said, making her voice soft and encouraging despite her excitement. "It's just me. You know me, right?"
It had never really occurred to Rebecca that Galla might not be able to hear her in her Pokeball -- until now. She could only hope that the Torchic would recognize her voice. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Another one? The flash of bright colors was hard to miss. Mya gave a small grunt of annoyance. It grew into pure aggravation at the sight of the newcomer rushing towards the one sitting under the tree. Now that was just rude. Clearly that woman with the blue hair was busy. Either way, Mya was going to keep out of the way. She had places to be.
Or, that was her plan. Eon, seeing the commotion and catching the sight of a new Pokemon, gave a cry and ran towards the two women and the new Pokemon. Mya stopped walking for a moment, watching him run in that direction. There were a few options here... with a sigh, Mya took the best one. She quickly made her way over before Eon could bother the people even more.
Eon gave an excited cry as he approached but before he could get too close Mya scooped him up in her arms. "I apologize," she said. "He's just excited to see another Pokemon. We'll leave you be, won't we, Eon?" The bagon struggled against Mya's arms, giving a sad cry and waving his arms towards the Torchic. Mya shot a look at the other woman. Pink. Pigtails. Bothering a random stranger for no reason. Mya knew their kind. A rich-city city slicker. Mya looked back at the woman with the Torchic. "If you don't mind me asking real quick.... what kind of Pokemon is that?" She carefully placed Eon back on the ground. He stayed by her side, watching the Torchic curiously before waving his little paws in greetings, giving a lazy sort of smile before sitting down on the grass.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca found herself inundated with strange people and Pokemon, the last thing she wanted at the moment. Even her parents had respected her desire to meet Galla alone, though they'd offered to be there at this important time in her life. Her instinct was to reach protectively for Galla, but she stopped herself, afraid the Torchic would take the sudden movement as an attack. And Galla did, in fact, turn rather belligerently towards the little blue Pokemon approaching, her feathers puffing up to make her look bigger. "Chic!""Galla, it's all right; I'm sure they don't mean any harm," Rebecca said, though her nerves were audible in her voice -- she wasn't actually sure of that, not at all. She glanced up at the other Pokemon's trainer. "Um, she's a Torchic."Normally, Rebecca would have happily elaborated, but she was just too off-kilter right now. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me When the torchic puffed up her feathers, Eon let out a happy growling noise, almost like a laugh. He clapped his little paws together and Mya sighed. He was just a little baby, wasn't he? What was with people thinking these guys were dangerous? Eon wouldn't hurt a fly. Although, at the mention on intending harm, Mya bit back a snort. If that was the case, the damage would already be done. This tiny bird and the trainer didn't look like a threat to anyone."Torchic? Never heard of it." Well, Mya hadn't really hard of any pokemon before. Other than just in passing conversation in the last few weeks. These names were hard to remember. She'd just call that one orange chicken. She glanced down at Eon. "Say hello, Eon." Eon did so, letting out a happy cry. He almost toppled over. His head was so big and heavy compared to the rest of him. Poor thing. Eh, he'd grow overtime, she was sure. He had to. There was no way he could stay as small and helpless forever.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "They're one of the rarer bird Pokemon, but they're known as a good companion for beginner trainers," Rebecca said. Spouting bird facts was kind of her go-to in an awkward situation, though she'd long since learned that it rarely made people think she was less weird. "They used to be quite popular here in Summerhill, as guards for livestock mostly."Rebecca paused, then added more quietly, "Galla here is from the last clutch of Torchics that my family bred on their farm, back before all the Pokemon disappeared."Galla, meanwhile, seemed to decide that Eon wasn't a threat. She let her feathers relax a bit and tilted her head, noting Eon's clumsy movements. He really was just a baby, huh? (Of course, Galla was very much a baby as well, but she didn't think so.) Harmless enough. "Chic," she offered, by way of greeting. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Mya listened to the girl's words and then sniffed. Huh, that seemed pretty cool. Although, she had no idea how something so small could guard livestock of any sort. Maybe that chicken was like Eon, just a baby. She wondered what the chicken would evolve into. Maybe a bigger chicken? It was cute tho, with those pretty feathers and that little beak."That's pretty cool. It's nice to see that one from that clutch is in good hands now. Probably happy to have a trainer." Mya at least took a guess this kid was good. Kid probably wasn't the right word, but anyone that didn't look like they could hold their own in a fight was a kid to Mya, no matter the age. At least these little birds guarded livestock, so... they could guard their trainer, right? "So, did your family like... breed pokemon for their livestock or breed pokemon just as a side gig? Can't say I ever met anyone whose family worked with pokemon so directly." The most Mya knew is that someone in her family had a pokemon at once point, but well, those stories didn't really matter when you were trying to get some food. "You must be pretty smart about em, then. I don't know much of anything about Eon here. Just that... he's a baby dragon or something."
Eon gave a happy cry at the torchic's chirp and waddled on over. Not too close. Mya had already begun to teach him proper manners. He sat down on the ground and kicked his little feet out. Mya wondered how long it would take Eon to grow a bit larger and more... well, dragon-like. At the moment, he was just a bobble head that could walk.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal If she'd picked up on Mya's skepticism, Rebecca would have launched into a rather intense description of Blaziken, the six-foot Fire/Fighting bird of her dreams. But Rebecca completely missed Mya's sniff, let alone the reason behind it, so she only replied to Mya's words: "I hope she is. Galla and I have been together a long time, actually, but I couldn't let her out of her ball ... until now."A broad smile crossed Rebecca's face at the thought; she looked at Galla lovingly, easily getting lost in the Torchic's feathers ... A bit tentatively, Rebecca put out a hand to lightly touch Galla's head. Galla looked up, slightly startled, and then pushed her head into Rebecca's fingers. "Chic!"It took Rebecca a moment to register and respond to Mya's question, distracted as she was by the soft warmth of Galla's feathers and the fact that she was finally, after so many years, touching Galla. Her Pokemon. "Hm? Oh, we farmed crops, mostly, but kept a few Miltanks and Wooloos, too. And, of course, the Combuskens to guard them."Rebecca smiled, appreciating the compliment. "I know a lot about birds. Other Pokemon ... not so much. I've never seen a Pokemon like Eon before, but dragons are cool, too."Galla settled down on the ground across from Eon, still enjoying Rebecca's petting. "Chic," she said, contentedly. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Wow, that must have been a stressful wait, never knowing if you would be able to let your pokemon out. On one hand, Mya could understand being excited about a pokemon being let out but on the other, she never really had to wait. Eon was a surprise to her when she got his pokeball. Honestly, she was fairly certain it was empty anyway. But turns out it had this weird... baby dragon in it? What a surprise. She blinked though. Wooloo? Milktank? Combusken? Those were just words to Mya. She didn't know what the hell any of those things were. Best not to ask, she figured. "That's pretty cool. Must be nice to have your little bud out now."
Mya did look down at Eon though. He was looking up at her with big eyes, seemingly wanting affection too. She knelt down and gave him a bit of a pat. Could he even feel it on that helmet of his? "Yeah, well, I've never really seen any pokemon at all so it's all new to me. He's just.... pretty weird, I guess. I like him. He's blue, so that's cool." She didn't really know how to feel about him yet. There was a sense of... protection? She had protected that pokeball for a few years so, yeah. But there was still some confusion there about exactly what the relationship was. Was she a trainer or a babysitter? Both? "So, like, are you going to become a bird researcher or something?" It seemed like a fair question. Were there specialist like that 80 years ago?

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca nodded, trying desperately not to tear up as she thought of all the years she'd waited to meet Galla, the dark moments in which she'd wondered if she ever would ... "I'm really glad she's here now.""Chic!" said Galla, nuzzling Rebecca's hand. She was really glad to be out of her Pokeball too! Rebecca kept petting her, trying to find a good rhythm. After all, she'd never petted a living Pokemon before, just a few old dolls. "You seem to be getting along well," Rebecca replied, watching Eon request and receive some affection from Mya. It made her smile, even if her eyes were still a little wet. (She hated crying in front of people, hated how easily she could be reduced to tears. Maybe Mya wouldn't notice ... or would be too polite to mention it.) "I think what really matters is caring about your Pokemon and listening to them, not how much you've studied them before. No book can tell you what your individual Pokemon is like ... and nobody knows how to take care of one anymore, not really."She nodded. "Yes, I'd like that. I've been studying birds since I was little; I know a lot about them. But, of course, I've never seen one ... until today."Rebecca gave Galla another loving look. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me Mya wouldn't mention the wet eyes Rebecca seemed to have. If someone waited so long to meet a pokemon, then it was fair to be emotional, right? Mya did wait to meet Eon but in her defense it was a 50/50 chance his pokeball was empty anyway."Hm? Oh yeah, I mean, we seem to understand each other." Mya booped Eon's nose, getting a happy chirping growl in response. "But I think you're right, you know? I mean, we all gotta start somewhere." Eon was still something to get used to, but Mya was sure she could handle it in one aspect or another. "Well, if I catch any birds I'll toss 'em your way." Eon was enough of a handful already.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca nodded. They did all have to start somewhere, and while she might know a lot about bird Pokemon, she certainly wouldn't fault anyone who launched on their journey as a trainer with less background knowledge. Everybody came to it in their own way, right? "Thanks, I'd actually really appreciate that." The idea of this woman contacting her down the line reminded Rebecca -- she'd forgotten to introduce herself again. "I'm Rebecca, by the way. Um, do you want to ... trade numbers? Only if you want to; we don't have to. But if you have any questions about birds or anything ..."Rebecca trailed off awkwardly. She had always been bad at getting to the "trade contact information" stage of becoming friends with someone. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The World Tried to Burn All the Mercy out of Me She nodded at Rebecca's introduction. She'd remember that name, Rebecca the bird lady. "I'm Mya, but a lot of folks just call me Rainbow, so whichever one suits your fancy." She fished around in her pocket for her phone, giving it a quizzical look. "I, uh, just got this thing like an hour ago, so I don't really know how to use it, but yeah, sure, I'll trade numbers."Contacts were always going to be a good thing, plus Rebecca seemed like she had her head on her shoulders. Plus, who knows, Mya might find a bird one day and Rebecca would like it. Pokemon were so new and so amazing, Mya could at least keep an eye out for something Rebecca would like. Who knows, maybe Rebecca would find something Mya would want. It was good to build bridges. "I'm afraid I can't offer knowledge on anything except street smarts, and that I'm pretty good at surviving in tough spots. So if you ever need to go someplace dangerous or something, I got your back." Mya didn't know how effective she'd be with a baby dragon, but he'd grow up eventually. Maybe. Eon looked at her but looked to far, toppling over. Ha, cute.
