 Professor YewThe professor's eyes sparkled. Now that she had given some information, she was starting to get into this battle as a battle, not just as a teaching tool. "Absol, use Scratch!"
Absol lunged at Eon, claws flashing. Though she was in worse shape than the Bagon -- not too bad, but definitely worse -- she fully intended to go down fighting, if necessary. "Sol!"
Then Professor Yew collected herself, trying to think whether there was any other information she should give Mya. Oh, did Mya know about Pokemon types? "So, you may already be aware, but each Pokemon has a type -- Absol is Dark-type, while Bagon is Dragon-type. Moves also have types. A move's type can determine how effective it is on a Pokemon of a certain type -- for example, Fire moves are super effective against Grass Pokemon, but not very effective against Water Pokemon. And when a Pokemon is the same type as the move it uses, the move does more damage. Sadly I can't demonstrate, because Scratch is a Normal-type move, not Dark."

That scratch seemed to do a lot more damage than before. Eon wasn't even ready to try and defend even when hit. Mya hummed in thought. So, stat moves were useful after all, who would have thought? And Mya didn't think there were any type advantages here, but if the professor said type mattered, then well, Mya would give it a shot if the time ever came.
"Eon! Bite!" Eon charged in for a bite, but it missed just as the absol moved out of the way! Eon skidded into the ground and spat out some dirt and dust. "Bagon...." he mumbled to himself, shaking himself off of the dust. Mya frowned. Well, that didn't go according to plan.

Professor Yew "Good job, Absol!" the professor cheered as the Absol dodged Eon's attack. She smiled with a little more enthusiasm and relish than was strictly professional, perhaps, but -- she was starting to see a path to victory for them. If everything kept going as it currently was -- if Absol could continue to avoid being burned -- they might actually win this thing. The professor hadn't really expected a victory, considering that Eon had more experience both battling and out in the world than her Absol. "Another Scratch, Absol," the professor said. Absol nodded, her eyes focusing intently on Eon -- she had't even looked around at the professor's cheers, although her tail had twitched. "We can do this!"

That scratch hit hard, hard enough that Eon struggled to get up after the hit. Mya fumbled in her bag before pulling out another potion. Eon, seeing this, ran over, relishing in the healing mist of the medication before giving a powerful cry for his small size. He wasn't down yet! "Stay sharp, Eon!" Mya said to him. "We aren't down and out yet."
The bagon spread his arms and gave another cry, scraping the ground with one of his feet. His eyes settled on the absol.... this wasn't over!

Professor Yew "Hmm ..." The professor's eyes narrowed. All right, maybe she'd forgotten about items herself -- even so soon after offering Mya that lesson -- in her rush for victory. That put things a little more up in the air than she'd thought. Absol looked back at the professor with steely eyes, as if telling her trainer that she was still very much in this fight, even if it wasn't going to be an easy victory. Professor Yew thought for a moment. Absol had taken some damage, while Eon was now fresh and unharmed, but if she used another Potion, Absol would lose a valuable chance to damage Eon. And she'd already seen Eon's damage capabilities; he probably wouldn't be able to take Absol out in a single attack. Maybe ... This could be a gamble, but it could really help. And even if it didn't, the professor had two Potions left. "Absol, use Leer!"

Mya watched as the absol leered at Eon again, causing the bagon to shiver. Ah, so leer was... making it harder for Eon to dodge out of the way and defend himself against attacks? That seemed about right...
"Eon! Bite!" The bagon charged at the order, preparing to bite then back away, watching wearily. Maybe he can do this! Maybe! Mya nodded at the damage that seemed to have been done. But the professor still had items of her own... but a used item meant more time to do some more damage, and if they got lucky Eon might be able to avoid being fainted first.

Professor Yew "Don't worry, Absol," the professor said, as Absol staggered back from Eon's bite, her fur disheveled. "I've got you."
The professor pulled out another Potion and sprayed her Absol with the medication. Shaking herself, the Absol accepted the healing with a grave nod, seeming to appreciate the support from her trainer. The professor touched Absol's head briefly while the Pokemon stood near her for healing; then Absol returned to the battle. "We won't go down that easily," the professor told Mya, smiling.

They each had one potion left. So whoever needed it first was probably the one that was going to lose, but with Eon's defense lowered, he was in, overall, the worst position... unless... "We won't either!" Mya called back with a smile. "Eon! Use Bite again!"
Eon rushed forward towards the absol, bearing his little fangs as he approached as fast as he could. If they could get the absol low enough to force another heal, then maybe they could get the advantage with one potion left? It would take luck, but Mya felt like luck was something she never really had. Besides, this absol was fast and a hard hitter. And with the absol moving first.... well, it could very well mean the battle was in their favor. But no matter, they weren't going to quit on a battle like this!

Professor Yew The professor winced along with Absol as Eon's bite did some considerable damage, leaving Absol staggering. But there was nothing they could do but power through. If the professor healed Absol again, Eon would just do more damage next turn -- and they'd lose a chance to attack. "Absol, use Scratch," the professor said. Under her breath, she added, "Almost done. Just hang in there."
One way or another, she didn't think this battle would last too much longer. Either Absol would take down Eon -- thanks to his weakened defenses -- or Eon's powerful bite would wear down Absol --- and exhaust the professor's capacity to heal her. Things could stretch out a little longer if Mya used another Potion, but with the power of Eon's attacks, the professor didn't think a longer battle would tilt in Absol's favor.

Oof, that hit hard. But they couldn't stop now, maybe they would get lucky. "Eon! Bite!" Mya said, the bagon charging again at her order, despite the shooting pain along his side from that strong scratch. The attack didn't look like it hit the right spot, but it was close... Shoot. This might be it.
"Hang in there, Eon! Don't give up!" She called.

Professor Yew One more hit like that, and the battle would be over. But that went for both of them -- Absol couldn't take another Bite, either. If they both healed up now ... Absol could take Eon down in two hits, but it would take Eon three to knock out Absol. Assuming everything went to plan, Absol could still win. "You've got this, Absol," the professor said even as Absol struggled to stay on her feet. "Let's get you healed up."
Absol moved gratefully towards the professor for a third spray of Potion. That was the last one the professor had on her. No more healing; now things were serious. The battle would be decided soon, one way or another.

Mya took the chance to heal Eon as well, knowing the bagon appreciated the medicine as he gave another roar, ready to battle! But Mya also knew they were at a serious disadvantage with Eon's defense lowered... and the absol hit very hard. This was going to be close... really close. Although the prospect of losing was an upsetting idea, Mya took a breath. Sometimes she would have to lose, but she learned a lot during this battle. That didn't mean she was happy with the potential outcome staring her in the face but there would be other victories.
"Don't give up yet, Eon, we aren't going to quit till it's through!" Mya said, Eon giving a cry of agreement.

Professor Yew The professor wasn't surprised to see Mya heal again. It would draw the battle out a little longer, but she still thought the math was in their favor. Two hits: that was all Eon could take, with his lowered defense. If Absol could get in two hits ... and Absol was a bit faster than Eon. "One more Scratch, Absol," the professor said. Absol looked at her with understanding: she, too, realized how close to the end they were. And after that Scratch, Absol had another move that the professor had been holding in reserve. It wouldn't really make a difference, if Absol was getting in hits before Eon anyway -- it didn't hit any harder -- but it would make a good finisher regardless.

The absol was fast--too fast. She charged in with incredible speed and gave hard swipe to Eon's chest, knocking the bagon back a few feet. He laid there, trying to get up, but couldn't. It was a one hit ko! Mya hissed in sympathy as she watched Eon collapse for the final time that battle, giving a small cry out between a mix of disappointment and pain.
Mya ran up to him and scooped him into her arms, giving him a small smile. He gave one in return, looking as beat up as she had in the past. He was pretty small and new to fighting... maybe Mya could give him some pointers in a fight without needing to worry about moves. Fighting was fighting, right? It might help him to learn how she thinks about it... even if her fights were only against other people.
"Thanks for the lesson, Professor Yew," Mya said. "How did absol hit so hard that last turn? It looked like it hurt Eon a lot worse than any of the other hits." Eon grumbled at that. It hurt a lot.

Professor Yew "Good job, Absol," the professor said as Absol returned to her side. She would have given the Pokemon more effusive praise, but she didn't want it to seem like she was gloating. Instead, she stroked Absol's head. Professor Yew was happy to answer Mya's question; if she hadn't asked, the professor would have brought up the topic herself. "Yes, Absol pulled off what we call a critical hit. Sometimes, a Pokemon will find an opening in its opponent's guard that allows it to deal much more damage than it usually would. Doing so is mostly up to luck, but some Pokemon are better at it than others."
And Absol was quite good at it. The professor couldn't help smiling as she looked down at her Pokemon. Then she glanced up at Eon. "That was a good match, Mya. I think you're definitely picking it up. Let's go get Eon healed up now."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? |
