It was embarrassing is what it was.... even if only a stupid cat saw it. Mya sighed. What was her luck? Eon had done his best but it wasn't enough, even in their first actual battle with a wild Pokemon. She glanced at him. He didn't seemed too bothered by it all. He happily walked along, singing to himself. Still, Mya had taken the trip all the way back to the lab for a reason. The professor would have some advice...Mya stepped into the lab and looked around. The professor had to be around here somewhere. She had sent the professor a quick message with her new phone, basically asking for a quick meet up for some questions about battling Pokemon.Professor Yet did not have to know about the horrible defeat. Mya sat down as she thought, picking up Eon and putting him in her lap. He spat out little trails of embers for fun, clapping with each burst of small flame. He had picked that up on the way back... as well as nibbling Mya's ankles every time she was about to get into an altercation with someone. Oh well, now they just waited until the professor could see them.

 Professor YewMya didn't have to wait long: the professor arrived in the main lab building's reception area, smiling as she spotted Mya -- and Eon, of course. She hurried over to them, eyes widening at the sight of Eon's little ember trails. Partially because, ack, fire, but mostly because it seemed like the Bagon had learned something new. "Hello, Mya!" the professor said brightly. "How can I help you today? Has Eon just started doing that? It looks like he's learning new things!"
It had been a while since Mya had first left the lab, and the professor had to wonder what she'd been doing in the interim. Something educational for Eon, certainly; he seemed more sure of himself -- and, of course, he hadn't been able to spit fire the last time they'd been here. how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? "Hey, Prof," Mya said, standing up with Eon in her arms as Professor Yew approached. She glanced at Eon at the comment. "Oh, yeah, it's something he picked up after we went to the construction site. Actually, that's why I'm here."
Mya shifted Eon so most of his weight was on her hip. Oof, he was getting heavy... and bigger? She couldn't really tell. Mya took in a breath. Alright... she could do this... this was the professor! Someone that she could trust. After all, Professor Yew herself had told Mya that her job was to help trainers! Right? Right.
"Can you help me and Eon learn how to battle? I realized that, uh... I'm not very experienced and Eon might get hurt because of that." Not needing to mention that Eon had already gotten hurt. Fainted, actually. But it didn't seem to hurt the dragon's pride, unlike Mya's. She had a grudge against that cat now. "I just thought--if you aren't busy, of course--that you could help us?" She looked to Eon. "He's a tough little guy, so I'm the one that really needs the help here."
Eon waved his arms at the professor, as if he wanted her to hold him as well. Mya scoffed. What a little baby this guy was. Always loving attention and hugs and cuddles. Every night they camped coming back here he had decided to sleep with Mya, cuddled up against her side. After she eve went of the way of buying him his own little blanket! The audacity of this bagon.

Professor Yew So Mya had headed to the construction site. The professor would have asked how things had gone there, but she was soon distracted by Mya's question. "Yes, of course, I would be glad to help." The professor did raise a hand to her face, though, tapping a finger against her lips thoughtfully. "Though I can't say I'm much more experienced than you are. I know a good bit of theory, of course, but when it comes to actually battling ... Well, the good news is that nobody really knows what they're doing at this point."
It had been so long since Pokemon battles had even been possible that the professor herself barely knew what to do -- so she could absolutely understand Mya's confusion. "That said, the best way to learn is simply by doing -- practice makes perfect, and practicing with other trainers is safer than heading out into the wilds. I'm actually free right now if you'd like me to join you for a practice battle. I could use the experience too, to be honest."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? |

That was something to consider... Pokemon did just arrive back in the world, after all. Perhaps everyone, even the wild Pokemon, were a little unsure about what was going on. Especially the people. Mya listened to the professor and then thought carefully, chewing the inside of her cheek. "Yeah, alright, a practice battle sounds good." She put Eon on the ground before shoving her hands in her pocket. At least this was a safer place to battle than during a storm at a construction site. If anything bad happened the professor would be able to help their Pokemon.
"Show the way, Prof. We'll follow. Won't we, Eon? You ready to practice battling?" Mya asked, looking down at the bagon. He stared up at her before giving a smile and gently headbutting her leg. "I guess that's a yes."

Professor Yew The professor led the way to one of the Lab's several outdoor arenas -- a relatively small one, without space for spectators, just spots marked for the two trainers to stand at either end of the dirt field. "I suppose we should just get started, then," the professor said, taking the Pokeball from her belt. "Come on out, Absol."
The professor tossed her Pokeball, and out came her Absol, looking around with a serious demeanor. The Absol pawed at the dirt floor of the arena and then turned her attention to Eon, clearly sizing him up. Whatever training it had received 80 years ago, Absol certainly seemed to know an arena when it saw one. "I have to confess ... Absol and I haven't actually battled much," the professor said. She was trying to be reassuring, but honestly, she was a bit nervous too. "This'll be a bit new for us too."how can we claim to understand something we've never experienced? |

Mya took her side of the arena and Eon stood in front of her, looking around the place curiously. They had never been in an actual arena before when it was for a battle. It felt different. Yet when the absol came out, Eon's eyes settled on the snow white creature. He gave a happy call and a wave. Mya frowned a little. So, Eon was not very ferocious with this Pokemon as he had tried to be with the shinx. Different setting, she supposed.
"That's alright, prof! It'll be a learning experience for both of us," Mya said. Although, by just watching the absol, it seemed to know what it needed to do just fine. Mya sighed. Of well, if Eon lost again, that's an important lesson to them both. This place was safe, they were alright here.... "So, how do we start this, exactly?" She asked. Eon seemed to finally get the idea and got into a 'battle ready stance'. It was on!

Professor Yew "Once both trainers have agreed to a battle, they'll set a start time. Like, say ... now." The professor wished she had a whistle to blow to single the beginning of the battle. Note for next time. "Then we start issuing commands to our Pokemon. It doesn't really matter what order we do this in -- the faster Pokemon will usually get in the first attack regardless. So, for example ..."The professor turned to her Absol. "Absol, use Scratch!"
The Absol's eyes narrowed as it ran towards Eon, preparing to attack. Scratch wasn't necessarily its heaviest hitter -- the professor figured it might be best to start out slow and ease Mya and Eon into the battle. After all, Eon didn't seem to even know he was in an arena.

The attack hit fast and it hit hard. Mya flinched and sucked air between her teeth when she saw Eon get slapped by sharp claws. The attack was clear on Eon's blue skin and he let out a short, pained cry before steadying himself with a growing rage in his eyes. No, not this time! There had to be something better than just that blind anger leading the battle. They had to play this smart. The absol was close to Eon.... better to not charge with Rage, not enough distance for good speed and good force... Bite may not be smart either... Mya felt her heart quickening the longer it took her to figure out what to do... ugh! There wasn't time for this!
"Eon! Ember!" Mya ordered. The bagon took in a deep breath, small embers of fire growing in his mouth before he spat them out at the Absol, using the close proximity to his advantage. "Good job!" Mya praised. Eon prepared himself for the next round of attacks from the Absol. He watched the larger Pokemon carefully, giving out a small growl. It was.... not threatening.

Professor Yew "Good!" the professor called. "Ember can also cause burns that will wear down a Pokemon over time, but it looks like Absol got away without one this time."
Indeed, Absol reared back and called out when hit by the fire, but the cinders went out, rather than continuing to burn in the Pokemon's coat. For a moment, she looked at Eon with a new gleam in her eyes, clearly considering him a more worthwhile opponent than previously. Then she glanced back at the professor. "You've done well, too, Absol," the professor added. "A solid Scratch. Let's do another one!"
Absol actually nodded her head as she turned back to Eon and lifted her claws for another Scratch.

Oh? Mya nodded, taking special note of what Professor Yew said. Alright, so if they got lucky enough, Ember was a good move to use to cause lasting damage? Good to know. Mya looked at a note she had scribbled on a receipt on the way over. Bite. That was another thing Eon seemed to master on the way, specifically on her ankles.
She looked up to see the absol strike Eon again, the force tossing the little bagon to the ground. Mya shoved the note in her pocket. "Eon, the legs! Bite!" At the order, Eon turned himself over, got up, and charged, giving a firm bite to one of the absol's legs. That move seemed strong. Mya would have to keep that in mind... and they weren't locked into the bagon's rage, either. Although, it seemed the more Eon was hit when he was angry the stronger and more fierce he got but.... still.... was it a worth it risk?

Professor Yew The professor nodded as Absol shook Eon off her leg, but not before taking a good bit of damage. As Absol limped back, Professor Yew said, "Now, one of the main advantages we as trainers offer our Pokemon over wild Pokemon is that we can use man-made items to help them out in battle. Like this Potion."As she spoke, the professor pulled a Potion from one of the pockets of her lab coat and sprayed it on Absol, who gratefully ran into the Potion's spray. After receiving the medicine, Absol looked much better. "It can be easy to forget that we have such an important role in battle as well. But as trainers, our job is to support our Pokemon."

Oh right! Mya remembered using one against that cat thing. She took one out of her bag and applied it to Eon, earning a happy gurgling growl before Eon faced back at the absol. So it was a good way to help their Pokemon.... she would have to remember that when the moment came that Eon needed her help. Mya knew one thing and it was that Pokemon were strong and dangerous, more so than any human. She used to wonder why people in the old stories depended on Pokemon to solve disputes, but she was beginning to understand... Even without human help they were strong little things, weren't they?

Professor Yew "And now we're back at the beginning, almost." The professor smiled. "But we have a better idea of each other's capabilities, and our Pokemon feel better. Ready to keep going, Absol?""Sol." The Absol gave Eon a severe, determined look. She most definitely wanted to win this battle, even if it was only a practice match. "Good. Now, you should keep in mind that some Pokemon attacks don't actually deal damage, but can reduce the capabilities of an enemy. For example: Absol, use Leer."The Absol glared at Eon with a predatory glint in her eyes, clearly preparing to stomp the little dragon into the dust. "Leer lowers the opposing Pokemon's defense, making your succeeding attacks deal more damage," the professor explained.

Eon seemed to shiver as the absol leered at him. Mya contemplated this... that could be an advantage, but didn't that mean less time to deal more damage to the opposing side? Perhaps it would be a good idea to lower the stats of a Pokemon before engaging it in battle, but on the other hand... "Eon, ember!" Mya said. Eon seemed to shake off the leering and let out another burst of small embers at the absol. Shoot, no burn. But at least there was some damage done. Maybe that was the wrong move but... well, this was a practice battle!
