Time: Night Weather: Clear Characters: Posie Labranth , @? Battle Mechanics: none
Posie slid down to the doorway of the roof access stairwell with a warm cup and a her phone beaming up soft blue light into her face amidst the dark. She curled up into herself tighter and tighter, as the thoughts swirled around inside her mind the more they were allowed to echo off the walls of her consciousness. A hefty swig of the coffee and a several moments pause on her phone, and she was staring out into space just letting the flow take her. The sounds of the city below didn't matter anymore right now, it was just her and herself here as she thought about what the other tenants must've thought when she screamed late at night before coming here. It was an illusion from sleep deprivation she kept telling herself, they happen and she just got spooked. She let the thought simmer inside herself while she tried to pick out the right words in case anybody asked. Or perhaps it would be best to just not say anything and let this just pass by so nobody gets worried, but then if somebody does get worried then it'd be her responsibility to say something. Her thoughts looped on itself and Posie was lost in a maze she built herself. The thought of not being able to just do something that seemed so simple like her sister pried at the deepest floorboards in her psyche, it was always her sister who spoke for Posie whenever she was nonverbal. The thoughts made Posie grip her phone tight until the accidental click of the screenshot notification pulled her back to the present. She looked down at the phone and sighed, taking a moment to collect herself while she took another hot swig of the smooth coffee.
Phantump was not too far behind, an eerie set of red glowing eyes in the dark until its oak stump came into vision along with a happy sing-song cry. "Hello there, sorry if I made you feel a bit lonely back there. I just needed to clear my head is all." The phantump curled herself into Posie's arms and looked up quizzically at her trainer, waiting for a response. "You know, you can come up here by yourself too. There's no need to have me for permission, I mean look at what you've done up here by yourself, made a wonderful garden up here for all the city pokemon while I was milling about unpacking boxes. Sorry I couldn't have helped you."

Farrah had been very surprised, when they'd come home a day or two ago after just meeting a new friend, only to find that the same friend actually lived in the same building. It had been almost comical, actually. They'd gotten home, were just unwinding and pulling things down for the night, allowing their new team members to find their own niches in the house to sleep in, when they'd sat down on the edge of their bed and gone to add Posie's number into their phone. At first, they'd been confused, and then an extreme level of disturbed and slightly scared. How did... how did Posie know where Farrah lived!? Were... were they a fan, who'd been stalking...? And then they'd kept reading, and oh. Oh, wasn't that just an actually shocking coincidence? Posie was their neighbor.
It was because of this that on this particular night, Farrah was shocked into awakeness by an incredibly concerning scream that echoed somewhere in the building. They jolted upwards with a gasp, heart racing. Decibel was standing on edge at the end of the bed, eyes darting around the room as if looking for an unseen intruder. Their Sudowoodo, Jazz, was also stiffened across the room by the window. "What in Giratina's name was that?" They said quietly to no-one in particular.
Shifting up and out of bed, Farrah grabbed their phone and turned the light on, looking around the room quietly, before sighing and stepping towards the door. "C'mere, guys." Dutifully, Decibel was already at their feet, but Jazz made a quiet noise and approached from the window. Opening the door, they quietly checked through the apartment. The only thing that they found, however, was Mosh the Seviper glaring from where he was coiled on the back of the couch after having been woken up.
"Maybe it was nothing, huh? Pbbhhh....." Farrah blew a raspberry, running a hand through their hair. It was much more disheveled and not styled in the least, at the moment, and kept falling into their face. "Well. I'm awake now, anyway... maybe some fresh air would help. Any of you want to come?" Mosh simply closed his eye and went back to sleep, and Decibel nudged his nose against Farrah's leg, before yawning and walking back to the bedroom. Jazz, however, nodded, and walked over to wait for Farrah at the door.
Farrah pulled a light jacket on over their casual tanktop as they left the apartment, and their hands found their way into the half asleep musician's sweatpant pockets as they trudged up towards the stairwell to the roof. Jazz wasn't too far behind, but grabbed her trainer's arm when she saw someone in the doorway. Farrah made a noise of question, before startling as well, noticing the trainer curled by the floor with the familiar Phantump.
"Hold on.... Posie? Is that you, there?"

"Ah!! I-I'm sorry that I woke you!"
Posie's face turned bright red as she sprung up straight and forced a cheery smile that the phantump moaned in concern towards. The phantump floated over with a freshly picked berry in its hands and tugged at Posie's pant leg before looking towards Farrah and her sudowoodo with a frown.
"I uh, I didn't know that you, were here or- I'm sorry, I was working into the night and I saw a ghost but not my ghost. A little girl that kind of reminded me of a lot of trans stuff and then I got scared and now I'm up here moping and no work is getting done oh noooo."
She groaned into her palms and pulled at her cheeks.
"I screamed and now I'm up here doing I dunno what. All my energy from back then is all gone now, but at least the garden is doing well.."
She gestured towards the small rows of planters across the roof, some already blooming with ripe berries and some pokemon meandering about in the garden. Gardening equipment were piled up in the corner, and a few bags of soil were tipped over with pokemon footprints scattered amidst the mess. Posie slid back down against the wall and took a deep breath, looking out into the cityscape towards the inky blot that was the Gladegloom in the distance.
"I also didn't even get your name, I just ran off all excited. How childish."
Her cheeks puffed up with a pout as she took a bite of the berry and phantump curiously looked over the sudowoodo. It moaned in despair as it dragged over a watering can, barely being able to lift it and sprinkles of water flowing out of its spout everywhere.

"Woke me-" Farrah tilted their head, confused for a moment. "...Oh wait, that was you? I had no idea." They watched Phantump with the berry for a moment, before looking back down to Posie. "It's not a problem at all. Nice night for a lil fresh air, y'know? And in your defense, I didn't know you were here either, 'till I got home that evenin'! A nice surprise. But ah.... you saw," the musician's eyes shifted back towards Phantump with an appraising look. The back of their mind prickled with the memory not too long ago of Phantump's hug - a little girl, friendly and sweet, the laughter of children in the air, hair standing up in gooseflesh - could it have possibly been...? But then, Posie said it wasn't her ghost, so... well that was terrifying! Poor lass.
"Being reminded of pre-transition or anything during the before can be painful," they nodded. "I'm sorry you had to go through that - or be reminded. I think all things considered, it's entirely valid to have been frightened, y'know? Good place to have come to, as well. Fresh air's good, helps clear the mind, relax the body..." Farrah took a long deep breath of the air with an easy smile, and paused to look where Posie had been pointing. "Oh wow, you weren't kiddin' when you said the garden's flourishing. It's gorgeous up here."
Their eyes widened at Posie's last sentence. "Ah Arceus, I didn't say? How rude of me, I am so sorry." They stepped across the entryway to sit down near Posie against the wall as well, relaxing and leaning back and simply taking in the scenery around them, before tilting their head to the side to take in their friend. "I'm Farrah. Nice to actually formally introduce to ya. And this gal with me here tonight is Jazz."
The Sudowoodo perked up at her name, before waving gently with a mild smile. She was just thinking of exploring the garden when a certain... sloshing, caught her rocky ears. Jazz turned her head just to see the Phantump with the watering can and wait was it coming over that way? Oh no no no! For a moment, Jazz froze, before quickly dancing aside just out of the way. Water! Wet! Oh my! "Woodo-wood!" she called out. It looked like she couldn't tell whether to move away from the little ghost, or to help the child carry the can.

"Ah! Phantump no! Thats not a grass type!"
Posie lurched forward towards the little ghost and scooped up the pokemon, balancing the watering can in her free hand and letting out a sigh. She looked over towards Jazz and made an effort to smile while she was taking a moment to catch her breath on the floor.
"Hello Jazz, I'm sorry. I think you're a bit too similar to a tree for at least little pokemon to not tell the difference!"
She let out a happy giggle as she picked herself back up and gently set phantump down besides Jazz. Posie looked back to Farrah as she dusted herself off and smiled. The reassurance they gave felt warm in their heart and knowing this new person was their neighbor settled her even more.
"I'm sorry about phantump here. She must've not known. Shes near entirely responsible for this lush garden up here too, I just brought the tools my folks shoved onto me before I left the farm and she took care of the rest. Well, as far as she could, the shovel is a tad bit too heavy for her.."

Having been rescued, Jazz put one of her branch-hands over her chest, as if warding off a heart attack of some kind. "Sudoo...." She looked to Posie at the apology, waving gently with her free-hand with an easy going smile, gentle and calm as could be. "Wood!"
Farrah bit back a chuckle behind their knuckles at the kerfuffle. They felt bad for Jazz, but she would've been fine - it was admittedly one of the most wholesome things the trainer had ever seen. "It's surprisingly easy to mistake her for the real thing! We - Decibel and I - actually caught her in the Gladegloom a few nights back. If it weren't for Dec, I wouldn't have known she wasn't actually a tree standin' there at all." The Sudowoodo rubbed the back of her head with a bashful look, pleased at the praise for her disguise.
"I'll be darned! For just a tiny little thing, Phantump's been doin' some amazing work up here. It's like a lil' slice of paradise right in the city. It's amazin' how resourceful these critters are, really. Just absolutely ingenious when they put their minds to things - it's a wonder that we got on without their help at all, before. What kind of berries do you all have startin'?" Farrah craned their neck a little, turning their head towards the planters - particularly the ones with berries already on them. "It seems like you've got a nice selection already."

"Hm? Oh! I'm not sure actually, phantump seems to have taken a liking to pecha berries so some of them are growing. My family also left me with some vegetables and that I've planted too, look look!"
Posie beamed with excitement and hopped over to the planters, happily waving her arms as she looked on to the vies growing on the lattice she had set up. Wrinkled red peppers hung from the vines largely untouched.
"Here is my family's peppers! Hottest in the region and been growing them right on the property for generations. Only getting hotter and hotter with each generation. Wild pokemon...don't seem to enjoy it as much...but granny would just pop them one by one off the vine! Here, see?"
She plucked one off the plant that phantump grew with pride and ,for a moment, tears streamed down her face as she downed the pepper in one bite. She smiled on though as the pantump sung with joy at her trainer enjoying the literal fruits of her labor. The phantump plucked another set of peppers excitedly offering them to Jazz and Farrah with a tinge of mischief in her smile.
"Oof, phantump really brought out the heat with this generation...grass types, seem to know their way around crops. I need to research these later to figure out what she exactly did to their genetics but wow...maybe one day we can run these out to the farm and give the family a visit. The orchard is a sight to behold!"

"Oohh," Farrah smiled over to Phantump, "A little sweet-tooth then, hmm?" The musician swung up to their feet as well, crossing the garden to investigate the peppers that Posie was pointing out. They raised their eyebrows, leaning forward with interest as they listened to Posie describe the incredibly tasting looking botanicals. Hotter and hotter, eh? Their eyes widened slightly as they watched the tears stream down their friend's cheeks. Oh, wow, definitely spicy. "Your granny must've had an inkling for the heat, I take it."
"Thank you, Phantump," Farrah accepted the pepper with a look of equal mischief. "It's a good thing spicy is my ball-park too!" They popped the pepper into their mouth much as Posie had done. Biting down.... hoooo boy. That pepper was some level of potent. They felt like their tongue was going slightly numb, but it was extremely tasty! "Wowza - that's awesome, y'all did a great job! Grass types certainly seem to know what they're doing indeed."
Jazz also accepted the pepper with a curious "Woo?". She watched Posie's reaction to the treat, and with a mildly worried look, looked to her trainer. Farrah didn't seem... quite so affected... so maybe it was okay? She sniffed the pepper slightly, before shrugging and taking a big bite. "Sudowood!!!" If Jazz had skin to turn red, or ears from which to pour steam, she felt like she would have! Instead, the rock-type stood there with eyes wide open, flailing her empty hand with a look of shock and surprise.
"I'll bet its a sight indeed," Farrah continued with a quietly concerned look towards Jazz, who seemed fine otherwise, "For crops this good looking already, I bet they'd be certainly proud of 'em! I wonder if it's really flourishin' now, with pollinator Pokemon back in the world to possibly lend a hand? I think," Farrah paused for a moment before covering their mouth with a hand to hide a delighted laugh, "I think this might be the tastiest produce I've ever tasted, actually?"

Phantump giggled with amusement at Jazz's reaction, floating back to Posie recovering from the spice and picking a handful of the peppers. She hummed a gentle tune as she did and the pokemon that were meandering about on the rooftop all peacefully gathered to rest by her merry tune. Alolan ratatta that were hiding in the dark scurried out to harvest a berry before running off into the city with food stuffed in their cheeks, flabebe poked their heads out of the flowers they held onto and bobbed along to the peaceful air up in the garden , getting their share of the harvest and sleeping comfortably with full stomachs. Posie looked genuinely happy here, a wide smile and her clothes being tugged by drifloon passing by overhead. It wasnt until she got lifted a few inches off the air that she snapped out of her contagious happiness.
"Woah- hey! You stop that, there's plenty berries to share!"
Promptly shoving a few into their mouths, the drifloon drifted away into the night, happily holding onto their midnight snack and phantump waving goodbye. She dusted the dirt off herself and spun around to Farrah, hands full of the wrinkly hot peppers.
"They just can't help themselves can they? Whaddya say we head over there tomorrow, and then head into the Gladegloom together! I haven't officially started my research yet and the forest is so nearby! Its perfect!"
Posie's smile was radiant, bringing out droves of pokemon to come together around the planters to share the sweet berries. Even some wumple crawled up from the walls and slunk over onto the dirt to enjoy this little haven of nature

Farrah watched Phantump go about her business with a quiet smile as they also worried about poor Posie's recovery from the peppers. It was amazing to see how the once barren rooftop had turned into its own ecosystem. And with the emergency mandate making catching Pokemon in city limits illegal, it was a whole different level of peaceful, knowing these Pokemon were safe from battle and trainer capture, just... living their lives.
Their eye was caught by the Flabebe, and they slunk over quietly to examine the tiny fairies quietly. They were so pretty, and tiny, and cute... they wondered where such a Pokemon could be caught, out in the wild? Jazz too seemed at peace, plucking a Pecha berry to snack on instead of the pepper, and conversing quietly with some of the wild Pokemon coming to and fro. Farrah in fact was so into seeing the fauna wandering that Posie's yell caught them by surprise.
They whipped around to see the Drifloon trying to pick the trainer up, and their hands stuttered in shock, unsure what to do. Was this exactly what Posie had described before? Oh, Arceus - was this an abduction in the making? Oh no! They freaked out for a moment, trying to figure out how to get the Drifloon to let go, when Posie seemed to figure it out herself. With the ghost Pokemon appeased, they let out a deep breath, a hand over their heart. "I uh-" Farrah blinked, and then laughed in surprise. "I suppose they can't - but they seem happy enough now, which is good."
The musician grinned back, also influenced by Posie's renewed mood. "I'd say that's a plan! It'll be a fun trip, and I bet we'll get a good start on your research. Yeah - I'm in! Let's do it." Jazz heard the mention of her home in Gladewood, and also cheered, waving her branches excitedly at Posie. "I suppose that means Jazz'll be joinin' us! I wonder if my third Pokemon would also be willing..." Farrah wasn't sure. Mosh was not the friendliest of Pokemon... and he seemed to only be tolerating them so far. Maybe an excursion would be a good way to bond?

"Oh! I'd love to see them whenever possible!! Though since we're neighbors I'm sure we'll be seeing each other a lot to then meet them at some point. Oh! Oh!"
Posie's energy was contagious and roused the nocturnal pokemon up on the rooftops, even phantump happily spinning around Jazz with a handful of peppers quietly snickering at her mischief. She pat Jazz on the back as if to apologize and gave the sudowoodo a tight hug as much as her stubby arms could reach. Posie meanwhile was observing the flabebe and accepting flowers from them, taking it as a token of thanks for nurturing this slice of nature.
"They are very grateful, perhaps I really am fulfilling my task as the next in line of my family. Maybe not running a whole farm but perhaps nurturing a new generation as it sprouts again is enough. I absolutely must speak to the professor as well, hey Farrah! How far is Mistveil from Gladegloom? I wonder if Yew would be interested in me sending data of grass-types and their influence on the Deprin ecosystem to her, I absolutely need to have a chat with her about the subject!"
She took off down the stairs without even waiting for a response, her happy humming echoing through the dark and phantump hurriedly trying to stay close by.

"He's certainly somethin'," Farrah chuckled in reference to their third Pokemon. The Seviper had certainly taken five years off Farrah's life, but not nearly as much as... well. "Though as much as I'd like to say he's tough, I think Jazz here actually holds the record for the badass of the family." The sudowoodo paused from conversing with the wild Pokemon for a moment to look bashful, waving off her trainer casually.
It was as the rock-type looked over that Phantump came over to pat her. Unable to stay even remotely upset, she simply hugged the little child back with a happy preen of "Suuuudodo." Couldn't be bothered by a harmless prank, right? And besides, the little one was too sweet to bear any ill will, and she was apologizing, so everything was smoothed over and all good!
Farrah hummed quietly as Posie talked. "Well, I agree - you don't gotta run a whole giant farm to make a difference, right? All the little bits adding up together, with gardens like this that haven't existed in years? That's big. I uhh, Mistveil?" Farrah paused for a moment in thought. "I'd say it was probably... when I was wanderin' that way, about a-- oh, uh!"
The musician cut themselves off when they realized they were talking to themselves. Whoops! They took a look at Jazz, who shrugged casually, before both took off after Posie down the stairs! "You'd be right that she'd be willin' to share that info!" They called after their friend.

Her steps clicked and echoed through the midnight, and Posie has a wide grin across her face. She was chasing this spark of confidence with an incredible vigor she practically barged down her own door and swerved through an incredible maze of greenery. Plants had near overtaken her apartment with several planters overflowing with incredible blooms and hanging planters with vines nearly reaching the floor. Stacks of papers littered the apartment from her complex miniature laboratory set-up across from the computer desk, to the coffee table in front of a tv on the floor. Equipment were stacked up on top of each other either in boxes or on the floor. Light poured out of her doorway into the hallway, phantump sauntered into the apartment, and behind the sheen of Posie's glasses was an aura of unshaking determination.
"Yes, YES. She absolutely must see some of this data I've accumulated over the years and my senior thesis...yes, hmmm not that one, it needs to be peer reviewed...."

Farrah slowed to a stop as they reached Posie's door, pausing to simply take in the scene, and the near manic movements of their friend caught in the whirlwind of sheer determination. They watched Phantump meander in as well, before huffing out a laugh.
Leaning backwards to look over their shoulder, Farrah looked down the hall where Jazz had just caught up. The Sudowoodo came over to stand next to Farrah, and looked past them to see what was going on. A moment later, the rock-type shook her head with a look of amusement, tugging on her trainer's jacket sleeve. "Yeah, you're right. Time for bed for us, huh?" Farrah looked back to the apartment, and waggled their fingers in a little wave towards Phantump. "G'night," they whispered softly, "Make sure Posie gets a bit of sleep - see y'all later!"
Patting Jazz's back, Farrah gently shut Posie's apartment door, before returning to their own apartment. Decibel and Mosh were both asleep already, so they were careful to be quiet as they settled back down and unwinded for the rest of the night.
