Night || Clear || Rolled Mechanics @posie Perhaps it was the particular nature of Gladegloom Forest, unlike other places in the Deprin Region, but the forest was more active and alive during the dark hours than it was during the day. While the twinkle of indoor lights of a certain farm and some houses were visible off in the distance, the forest itself lay dark and ever ominous. Foreboding to some, and inviting to others.
While no man-made lights lit the dark woods depths, fairy lights and glittery little orbs floated behind the veil of leaves and branches. It seemed to be calling out - inviting those out at this dark hour for a walk. A stroll. A little exploration into the deep dark... what could it hurt? Certainly nothing, to those attuned to the forest and its mysteries. Curious eyes glowed in the fringes of the trees, ever curious. The noises of the night were a melody unto themselves as well - tricky peals of laughter and lonely howls. It was time for an adventure for Posie and Phantump!
OOC: Welcome to your first wild encounter! Your first response will be to set your scene; what your trainer and Pokemon are doing, where they're going, how they're feeling, etc. From then on however, it's encounter time! If you have any questions about how these threads work, mods are always willing to answer questions or help! But for now.... good luck!

Phantump's ghostly moans of protest echoed down the halls after her trainer Posie skulking down the stairwell. This venture felt unwise and the both of them knew it. The threats of the city this late at night shadowed in comparison to the harrowing folktales passed down from the generations. The collective consciousness of the forest had a way of abducting the foolish, the lost, and the curious. Laughter in the dark calls out to the weary traveler passing through the shadow cloaked woods, and with the return of pokemon the forest was alive with the whims of tricksters. The deeper that Posie ventured into the forest, the more her head spun amidst the trees and blinking lights in the night. Phantump let out a concerned wail and tugged at the bottom rim of Posie's labcoat.
"I know, I know. Its a really, really bad idea to go out into the Gladegloom alone...and at night. But I couldn't get any sleep! I need to act or I'll be sitting at that computer typing away research for the rest of my life. I'm not doing that anymore, I'm not going to be a shut-in anymore, I need to do this. You understand right?"
Phantump paused for a while as her trainer stormed ahead and looked behind her as if ta breadcrumb path would conjure itself. Nothing, just the slinking shadows in the boughs of the Gladegloom that felt like they were amused by the phantump's anguish. She stumbled on ahead to catch up to Posie.

As the nighttime progressed onwards, the calls of the wilds seemed to be more coy - inviting and curious. Lights and sounds flitted away as if parting a path for Posie and Phantump as they continued their walk. Ever watching. Ever knowing. One particular shuffle of leaves led to a little joyous cackle as a shadow bounded into the tree tops.
The movement of the unknown Pokemon however, set off another; an unsettled hooting ruffle from a little ways above Posie's head. Slowly, one bright red round eye opened, and then another. The eyes bobbed up and down as the Pokemon took in it's surroundings before turning down to the two trainers. "Hoo... hoot?" On closer inspection, the creature looked like a little round owl with particularly impressive eyebrows.
Look honing in on Phantump and narrowing slightly, the Hoothoot fluttered down from it's branch to land much closer to the ground within reach. "Hoooooooooo..." as much as a small rotund bird could, a soft growl came from it's throat. It was keen, now! Awake, ruffled, and ready for whatever was coming it's way.
OOC: A wild Hoothoot appeared! Hoothoot is faster and moves first. Hoothoot used Growl! Phantump's attack is lowered by 1 stage (14).

Posie tensed up at the little Hoothoot on the ground and reflexively scooped up her Phantump, holding her tight and only slowly loosening her grip on the haunted stump after seeing the small owl. Its small growl did little to intimidate Posie, but it definately spooked the Phantump enough for her to bundle up tighter in Posie's cradling arms. "Well aren't you a curious little thing. Its okay Phantump, hey how about we try battling? This one here seemes up to it!" She gently set the pokemon down and glared over to the fluttering Hoothoot up ahead. Although Phantump began to whine at the notion of a confrontation, something inside her sparked the will to try. Posie's reassuring smile gave Phantump a warmth inside her incorporeal form. Posie pointed forwards and for the first time in a while, her confidence flared to life in this moment. It felt small, but to her it was breaking the thick shell of avoiding conflict she has sequestered herself in for years. Even if it is alone in the forest at night. "Tackle!" As if they were linked together, Phantump mustered the bravery from her trainer to lunge forward at the Hoothoot!

Hoothoot fluffs her feathers up at the reaction to her growl, taken aback a bit as she resettles herself on the lower branch she's now perched. "Hoo-hoot?" Oh dear - she hadn't quite thought that these two new opponents would be so reactive. Perhaps she was stronger than she thought. Or... maybe it was that being in the forest too long amongst all the more rowdy pranksters and ruffians was beginning to get to her.
At being acknowledged by the human, Hoothoot tilts her head to the side - which was to say, she rotates it an almost eerie amount until her eyes look near sideways, and hoots idly back at Posie. Well aren't you curious too, she seems to be saying. When the human gets ready for battle she hops onto her other foot and flutters her little wings, ready to rumble.
The tackle hits - much more solidly than Hoothoot expected it to. With a mildly undignified squawk she tumbles off her branch, and doesn't even have a chance to right herself she is so unprepared. She picks herself up, feathers all in disarray and out of sorts, a twig sticking out of the fluff near her brow. "H-hoot??" She growls in surprise - and quite a bit more defensively. This was clearly a significantly higher challenge than she thought it was.
OOC: Phantump uses Tackle; it's a Critical Hit! Hoothoot takes 10 damage. Hoothoot has 2/12 HP! Hoothoot uses Growl. Phantump's attack goes down by 1 stage (12).

Both Posie and the Phantump were shocked at the Hoothoot tumbling forward. They both turned to one another in disbelief and Phantump looked almost, excited? She's been inside that old shed for years, handed down from an older generation and now in a time she doesn't recognize. The world has changed from when Phantump was first caught, and a small glimmer of her past shone quickly in the moment. She was lost...and then a big tree? The memory was still hazy, but the Phantump looked down at her now spectral hands and for a moment saw those of a young human girl. The memory faded as fast as it appeared and the undignified squawk of the small owlet ahead pulled Phantump back into the present. She felt a new resolve and turned to Posie.
Posie herself was just as surprised as her pokemon. At first she jolted to her feet at the unexpected surge of power from Phantump's tackle but, seeing the Hoothoot wobble back onto its feet struck a chord in her brain. The great balls she had purchased earlier were jingling in her bag and as she reached out to one, she could feel her heart speed up. The moonlight glinted off the shiny brand new surface of the pokeball and as she played with the small red raised ridges in her hands, she felt almost guilty. Was she really going to imprison this creature to servitude in this orb? Thoughts buzzed in her mind until Phantump gently pulled at her lab coat and smiled. No, its not imprisonment at all. Its the opposite actually. Her endless research has found freedom and power from a trainer's influence and looking at the owlet in front of her she knew that as long as she cared for it like she does for the forest then the bonds will give mutual strength. Posie threw the ball without thinking about the technique and, with an incredibly undignified throw, stumbled forward onto the dirt as the great ball slammed into the Hoothoot's forehead and pulled it inside with a red beam.

The Great Ball hit Hoothoot lightly and surrounded her in a flash of light -- how odd! Inside the ball, Hoothoot took a moment to evaluate her new surroundings before deciding she rather liked them. It seemed more peaceful in here than outside among the tricks and travails of Gladegloom. Certainly it felt like a better option than returning to face Phantump's tackles, but it wasn't only that immediate threat that kept Hoothoot in the ball -- she'd discovered in facing Phantump that she was not as ready as she'd thought, and surely a human who had raised such a strong Phantump could help her grow as well. Not to mention her interest in seeing the world beyond Gladegloom ... With such motivations on Hoothoot's part, the ball barely shook before the button flashed to indicate a successful capture. Hoothoot had joined Posie's team!
OOC: Capture successful! Please add Hoothoot's statblock to a new post on your tracker. (Be sure to copy and paste it twice -- once normally and once between [*code] tags.) Posie tumbled onto the dirt path after a clumsy throw of the great ball right to the Hoothoot, and without much struggle the ball clicked as the newly acquired teammate settled in to her new future. Astonished, Posie fixed her glasses and scrambled to the pokeball to savor in the moment. Her first battle, and capture.
"I did it, I caught a pokemon all by myself. Well, you did most of the work Phantump."
Moments of silence passed in the forest, and Posie couldn't tear her eyes away from the pokeball. It had a new weight to it now that it contained a living breathing pokemon inside of it. Her mind wandered to the logistics, the possible inner workings behind this item and her heart felt a tinge of pain at the thought of a pokemon being imprisoned inside without anyone to release it. She glanced over to her phantump blissfully enjoying the night stroll in the Gladegloom and thought to herself just how long was Phantump locked inside the pokeball in the old shed. Can only have been in her grandmother's lifetime and while pokemon had once occupied the region, but during their absence it must have been painfully lonely. Something felt not quite right with her spectral companion and it bothered her to no end, but one such worry was of course leaving the poor thing unnamed for quite some time.
"Hey Phantump, it feels very odd to be referring to you as that when I feel like you deserve a name. You were my grandmother's, but I have no idea what she called you or if she even named you. Not to mention I have the really strange feeling like you do have a name..."
The phantump looked upwards into her trainer's full moon glasses and for a moment, felt a passing wave of despair. She looked down at her ghostly form, and back up at Posie only able to create a spectral groan. There was something not quite right about this but phantump couldn't place it at the moment. On the trail ahead as they carried onwards, a flower caught her attention but for all the wrong reasons. Bell-like flowers hung from the stems with shining black berries decorating the entire plant. It nailed dread into her as she quickly yelped and hid behind her trainer.
"Whats wrong? Hm? Oh, thats deadly nightshade...good thing you were able to identify it so quickly, some unlucky soul could've easily made a grim error and...I'd rather not think about that. I guess grass types have a lot of knowledge on plants then, even deadly ones."

As Phatump and Posie discussed their relationship, the idea of names, and then the nightshade, they lost track of their surroundings a bit -- so much so that when Phantump went to hide behind Posie, she actually bumped into (or rather, being a ghost, passed through) a Pokemon who had quietly wandered up behind the two. This Pokemon didn't respond aggressively, though; it wasn't interested in battle. No, the Turtwig was trying to get at a particularly green and tasty tuft of grass that Posie happened to be standing on. It took a bite at the grass, tried to pull it out of the ground, failed, and tried a cursory bite at Posie's shoe instead. Was this some fun new food, or just an inedible rock?
OOC: A wild Turtwig appears! Phantump is faster than the wild Turtwig, so Posie can act first. Turtwig // Level 2 // male Max HP | Attack | Defense | Speed | 14

The chomp from the turtwig's beak into Posie's shoe induced a sudden kick and a shrill yelp that cracked through the Gladegloom. Like a fish on a lure the turtwig flopped about on the shoe, gnawing a small bit on the rubber before finally letting go and leaving a light puncture where the hook of his beak was. "Ah, I'm sorry I'm so, so sorry! Woah hey look at you....aren't you an interesting one." Posie pulled up the grasses where the turtwig wanted to graze and offered it in her palm up to the odd looking turtle. Phantump stayed by her trainer and ,as if she were an impudent child, lurched forward with a ghostly howl in a playful attempt at frightening the turtwig. Phantump uses Astonish!

Oh! Oh no! Hey! Turtwig did not like that the rock it had bitten started moving and dragging it with it. Startled, it let go and moved back a bit. Food was not supposed to act like that! Hey! But then there were fresh grasses in front of its face, offered by the human who seemed to be attached to the ... rock? Whatever that thing it had bitten was. Somewhat mollified, Turtwig took a bite at the grass -- only for Phantump to leap out at it. That was no good, either! Turtwig jumped back, tumbling over itself and actually hurting itself in its fright. Ouch! This was just not a very good time for Turtwig, huh? Annoyed by the interruption to its meal, Turtwig launched itself at Phantump -- and went right through the ghost without inflicting any harm at all. How frustrating!
OOC: Phantump's Astonish hits for 3 damage, leaving Turtwig with 8 HP. Turtwig uses Tackle, but as a Ghost type, Phantump is immune, and it has no effect. Posie suddenly made the connection to situations like this. She fumbled around in her bag for another pokeball and her eyes lit up with an overwhelming joy. Before she could even attempt to throw the pokeball, however, Phantump's mischievous spirit took the better of her as she lunged forward from where the turtwig had passed through her. A haunting wail and blowing red eyes in the dark rushed forward towards the turtwig only to stop right before Phantump collided headfirst. To her it was all fun and games, yet the turtwig's annoyance seemed to indicate the contrary as he reeled back from the second scare of the night.
"Ugh, how do other trainers make this look easy...Phantump quit scaring the poor thing to death!"
Phantump uses Astonish!

This was getting quite frustrating! Turtwig jumped back as Phantump scared it again, then once again tried to charge the source of its fright, with no success. The ghost simply couldn't be hit with Tackle, but Tackle was all Turtwig knew, so what else was it supposed to do? It completely ignored Posie, since none of her words seemed to have an effect on the ghost tormenting it -- if her own Pokemon wouldn't listen to Posie, why should Turtwig? Maybe if Posie got Phantump under control, Turtwig would be more receptive to further diplomacy -- then again, it was probably too late to get the little turtle off its battling course.
OOC: Phantump hits for 3 damage; Turtwig's HP is now 5! Turtwig attempts another Tackle, but it has no effect! Turtwig: 5/14 Status: none Stat changes: none Held item: none You have 4/5 Great Balls. You have 1/1 out-of-battle heal left. Your have 1/1 normal Repel. This is encounter 2/3. Capture on!

Posie's voice creaked from the long history of underuse, but a fire had stirred inside her belly at the ghost's mischief which had gone past pranks at this point. For the first time in Posie's life, she stood straight up and with a thunder in her throat she exclaimed, 'Enough!'.
Phantump whipped her stump head around and soon was on the receiving end of fear. She had never heard such a timid trainer raise her voice and, for a moment, she felt a small bit of shame in herself. Meanwhile, Posie was clutching an empty pokeball tight with tears bubbling at the corner of her eyes. She gave the prankster ghost a stern glare before collapsing right back down and sitting on the dirt next to the two grass pokemon.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to raise my voice at you. I try to hold my tongue all the time to be courteous but I suppose it just lets me get waked all over. I promise little turtle...tree, phantump is much more behaved than this."
Posie reached over to her phantump and plucked a couple leaves off her branches, then offering them to the turtwig with a smile before then offering forward the empty pokeball.
"Here, i've read that the leaves of Phantumps have medicinal properties. and if you'd like you could even come with! This reckless little hoothoot decided to come along, and i'm sure the rooftop garden can be a good home for you?"

The shouting made the already-frightened Turtwig flinch, but it began to come out of its shell, so to speak, at Posie's softer tone. When she offered it some of Phantump's leaves, it extended its neck warily, carefully taking the leaves in its little beak and chewing them, quickly at first and then more slowly and contemplatively. It wasn't sure whether the leaves genuinely had medicinal properties, as Posie had suggested, but they sure did taste good. If it went with these two, it could have more? And maybe other kinds of leaves? The idea of a "rooftop garden" sounded interesting, and to be honest, Turtwig still wanted a chance to get back at that rude little Phantump. If it came with Posie, maybe it could get stronger and show Phantump what for! Poking its head forward, Turtwig activated the Great Ball. It shook at first as the Pokemon almost changed its mind, then settled. Turtwig had joined the party!
