"If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy." -Terry Pratchett, The Wee Free Men Mama said it was okay, that it was quite alright
Eon let his legs slide out from under him as he laid down fully, letting the Aerodactyl teeth on his shell. It would leave just surface level scratches Mya would buff out later during his daily shell-polishing. Mya watched this, tilting her head to the side as her eyes narrowed. She hummed. Strange. This wasn't how battles were supposed to go. She was confident in Eon's ability to defend himself, but he didn't seem worried at all. In fact, he seemed to think this thing was absolutely no threat at all.
"Seb, get over here," she called. "This thing isn't a threat to anyone." She walked forward, approaching confidently. She peered at the Aerodactyl before reaching a hand out to try and gently pet its neck, if she would be allowed. "Hey there, bud, feel better now?" she asked softly. Her eyes softened a bit. This thing seemed very young. No self-respecting predator would allow itself to be in such a vulnerable position. Not unless there was something else keep an eye on it.
"Look," Mya would say whenever Sebastian approached. "It's teething." The small scrapes in Eon's shell was evidence enough of that. "It'll probably loose a few teeth or something if it keeps this up. If it does can I have them? No particular reason."
Wormy gave a grunt as he slithered up, looking at the Aerodactyl like a Victorian woman looking at a rat caught in a trap. Disgust. What was this thing? It was hideous. Mya just shot him a look and he turned his head with a huffed 'dragonair'. Why she was interested in such an awful thing was beyond him. Atlas didn't seemed too bothered either, now relaxing with his eyes closed again and returning to his peaceful persona after the battle.

As Eon sat himself down, Buckshot made a happier grumble, adjusting his bite to better scratch that teething itch. When Mya approached, he growled, but didn't move from his position against Eon when she touched him. Just gave her a side-eye as Sebastian moved over to her side.
"He's... Teething..." He sounded amazed at that. "Oh my Arceus, it's just a baby... I've... This is unheard of! Mya, baby Aerodactyl are... Non-existant! Breeding in captivity was never proven, or written in any book we have access to, and all living pokemon were already adults!" he sounded less scared now, more just. absolutely in awe. "You can absolutely keep the teeth. Oh, I'm going to have to find proper teething equipment for you, Buckshot." The researcher now fearlessly moved to his pokemon's side, hesitantly putting his hand on it. Which of course, caused grumbling, but it didn't move.
"Probably was in a lot of pain..." He mused, giving it a quick Scritch. "It's okay. I've got ya buddy. You're okay now. Just needed to calm down from your temper tantrum." Seb really was a big softy, eyes full of immediate love and amazement. "And you're probably hungry too, huh? I know Everest was always a hungry little gremlin when she was a baby." THe ice cat hissed in protest, skittering to hide behind Mya. Her trainer was insane, talking to this big beast. Though at least Buckshot seemed a lot more relaxed, even through the glaring at the two humans. A low growl of annoyance, but the content rumbles were enough to show that he was, for now, happy to just chew on his new toy.

Fierce eyes narrowed as she tapped her knuckles on the beast's head and bared her own teeth. "Don't fucking growl at me, kid, I'll tear you to shreds, you got that?" she grumbled and then knelt down to give Ev some soothing pets. "It's alright, girl, he's just a big, stupid baby." Mya returned Wormy to his ball as Atlas walked up with a 'chaar' at Ev and a small wave. It had been ages! She had grown bigger since the last time they had spent time together. Mya hoped Atlas' calmness would help soothe her worries.
"Baby or not, this thing is going to need a lot of food. We have a slaughterhouse near the gym I have free use of thanks to the amount of food my pokemon put away. Jarn was not easy to feed... I shoveled so much dirt off of the mountains..." Mya crossed her arms and sighed. "Still, I'd be careful around it, Seb. I don't think this thing respects you as a trainer yet. You have a lot of hard work ahead of you to get through that thick skull. I can help here and there, but you'll need to give it some serious discipline lessons."
Eon gave a grumble as saliva dribbled down his shell. He let out a sigh, wondering what his life had become. Mya patted his back. "Stay put for just a bit longer, bud. We'll get this thing off of ya and I'll give you a nice polishing, okay?" He grumbled back.
"Food's the first thing we need to get," she said. "I take it these things eat meat, right? Atlas and I can go grab some while you stay here... if you think you can survive for like, five minutes without me around."

Buckshot hissed under his breath when he got whapped, but just adjusted away from her to the other side of her own pokemon. Thankfully, he seemed less interested in food at the moment. More interested in chewing on the Shelgon, if the pleased rumbles meant anything. She in fact watched as he got a good bite in, and there was a clinking of bone against stone as a tooth fell out and slipped off Eon's shell. Which fully soothed the baby, its purring growing louder, and its jaws unlatching from its rock for the moment. Already a smaller tooth in place of where the one that had fallen out had been.
The Aerodactyl rubbed at his face a moment with his wing, then started sniffing at Eon a little more intently, as if trying to figure out if the Rock was Food. At least he wasn't paying too much attention to the trainers or the smaller pokemon. Everest of whom turned and gave a quick "Snea!" to Atlas, moving up to him and offering a careful hug. She'd definitely gotten bigger, and more confident. Seemed a little calmer with the Charmeleon as calm as he was, moving to his side quickly to catch up a bit. Beelze had quickly bounded over, and stood up on his hind legs to give Atlas a few licks on his snout in greeting.
"I'll be careful. I'm just... glad he calmed down." Seb admitted, "I wasn't entirely sure if... it was even possible? There's so little known about Aerodactyl. But since it can... I think... I think I can manage. With help. And lots of food... yeah we should probably feed him before he gets too many bad ideas..." He admitted, watching his pokemon. "Yeah, Aerodactyl eat meat. I think I'll be fine? If it becomes Not Fine, I can always put him back in the ball." He had a course of action now. Though it helped that he was an experienced trainer, who was used to at least Everest. Who'd he'd had to ball many many times.

Eon huffed at the child's insolence as he shook himself, making a very clear statement that if the winged creature wanted to try and turn him into food, he'd better kill the shelled beast in one shot. Mya narrowed her eyes and picked up the lost tooth, inspecting it before shoving it in her pocket. She hummed as she listened to Sebastian, staring at this pokemon. It was ill-mannered which just wouldn't do. It needed to learn its place, but what was the best way to teach it that without using her pokemon to beat the crap out of it.
Atlas gave Ev a warm hug and a smile, petting Beelze on the head and giving a greeting. He gave them some updates on the gym, what had been happening since they had last seen each other, about Mya's visit to the strange island in the stormy sea. The works. He glanced up and Mya and then stopped chatting, looking just purely disappointed.
Mya had leaped over Eon, shocking the dragon as she used him as leverage as she tackled the living fossil to the ground, holding it in the best head lock she could as she growled at it. "Gimme those teeth, chomper!" she said. The goal wasn't to actually knock out any of his teeth, but establish a precedent: Mya was the type of human that was not beyond getting dirt on her face fighting pokemon. Could they kill her? Yes. But they'd have to try damn hard cause she was the type of person that would bite back.
Despite the sudden action, she was being very gentle with the fossil, using no more strength than she would on her own pokemon team. She could sense the disappointment from all three members of her team as she struggled with the Aerodactyl on the dusty gym floor. Atlas grumbled, trying to make sure she didn't plunge into the boiling water. Mya was highly prone to injury.
Eon just looked like a sad parent as he turned to Sebastian and grumbled "shelgon..." in apology.

Atlas, at least, would learn that Beelze was from the island. A Sharp head shake to agree that it wasn't a great place, and he was much happier here. Everest had just leaned into the other 'mon, relaxing fully...
When Mya tackled the big baby of a Fossil. Buckshot screeched in surprised fury at the sudden attack, squirming under her and trying to crane its neck around and snap at her. Ho- How DARE! This was Assault! Battery! With a Deadly Weapon! It took a long time for him to realize that she wasn't hurting him. And that the wrestling settled the itch in his wings. In that moment, Mya could feel the energy shift. And instead of trying to maul her, when he craned his neck around, it was the happiest snarl.
He still struggled and wriggled, but when teeth caught, he didn't shake or chew, but just snarled in encouragement as he tried to get the upper hand. Much to Sebastian's panic, having only just calmed himself. "Ah- B- Buckshot! Mya! Why- No, Buckshot you can't eat Mya she's my friend, Oh Arceus!" He was clearly a ball of panic, having rushed up and put his hands on Eon as he tried to figure out how to seperate the two. Too panicked to notice the startled shriek from Everest, who'd run up to do the exact same pose as her trainer on Eon's back. Beelze seemed unworried, just starting to bat at the Charmeleon's tail.

Mya shoved her arm in the tooth-filled mouth and used the leverage to pin the dinosaur's head to the ground as she moved her legs to try and toss him onto the dirt, now fully just enjoying the game they have made. Problem was, he was as heavy as a boulder but that wouldn't deter her! "Got you now you big baby!" she growled back with a playful laugh following. This was by far the most fun she had had in a while! Sure, wrestling with her pokemon was part of keeping them healthy, but Eon was just a round ball of stone now and Atlas was chiller than an Alolan Sandshrew. She would attempt to gain the upper hand and then suplex the living fossil.
"Did you call this thing Buckshot? That's a cool name!" Mya said, leaving herself open for a surprise tackle.
Eon startled as he was suddenly crowded, giving a deep sigh as he grumbled something. There was no harm here. Mya was fine. Should there be any danger, Sebastian's new pokemon would be a smear of red on the ground. The Shelgon shook off his shell, trotting a bit away to get some space before he would settle down again. Wormy came over, attempting to clean the saliva off of his shell by splashing boiling water onto him.
Atlas, on the other hand, moved his tail back and forth, offering a shining toy to Beelze as he gave a "chaaaaaar" and a little wave of the claws. A clear 'calm down you two' from the fire lizard. Mya wrestled with all of them at some point. He had accidentally left her with bad burns or scars on her arms and legs from his claws, but she was a tough cookie. A Faminite was not the type to go down easily. If anything, he was certain she'd prefer gym challengers to take her on in combat themselves but that wasn't the rule sadly.
"Sebastian, this thing can't hurt a fly right now," May laughed after a quick moment. "It doesn't even hurt all that much, I promise. Wormy's done worse and that's saying something! He's just a loud little baby, huh? Aren't you?"

Beelze happily played with the Charmander's tail. This happy look on his tiny snoot, even if he did manage to smack the tail it hurt a lot more than expected. Baby didn't know his own strengths, and he was way too excited about the flickery-shiny-toy to notice.
And well, Buckshot was even louder in his playful snarls, letting her toss him around and then squirming to try and pin her in turn. A glitter of intelligence in those dumb little eyes, as he took the advantage given to him. Full-body tackled Mya with a happy grawrl, finally relaxing a little bit. The energy being worked out of his wings, the teethies that had been bothering him finally out of his mouth. The only thing that'd make this better was nums! Yes, food would make this a wonderful day!
But for Sebastian... it took an unworried Eon, and reassuring Atlas along with Mya's laughs to relax the ball of anxiety. He took a deep breath in, then let it out, hugging Everest tight to his chest. "As... as long as you're both okay... I suppose?" He admitted finally. Watching the proud screech from said 'loud baby' as he wrestled with his new playmate. "He's not being too rough? Or- oh... he does look like he's having fun." he admitted. There was this hopeless fondness the boy had for pokemon, now that he'd figured out how to read their body language. And even if not even two weeks ago he'd been scared shitless of this Aerodactyl... He was so soft for his babies.
"And uh- I'm glad you like it! It just kinda came to me, but it seemed like it fit at the time. And even if I didn't know what to do with him, I couldn't just leave him without a name. It felt wrong." And there was that smile. The cute little one he had when he was finally relaxing fully.

She let out a "ah!" as she was tackled to the ground by the large pokemon, knowing full well she had left herself open for such an obvious attack, but play-wrestling was only fun if you let your opponent win sometimes. She quickly wrapped her legs and arms around this thing and clamped that mouth shut with her forearm and bicep with a laugh. "Got you!" she jeered as she then let go of the pokemon. She entered 'cool-down' wrestling as she lightly smacked the things jowls and then gave lots of scritches. She was done for now, knowing her limits.
Mya smiled back at her friend and then looked to Buckshot. "You have a very powerful partner here, you know. With some proper training, he'd be able to take on Atlas in a proper gym battle. Not a dragon for sure, but still strong, nonetheless. But so far this thing doesn't respect you at all. Acts in combat without orders, doesn't think before acting or checking in with you about moves." She hummed as she patted Buckshot's head a final time. "We should get him some food. I say we take him with us while we do it. First lesson you'll need to teach is whose boss."
She gave Sebastian a wink. "So? Order your pokemon to stand at attention and follow you. I'll demonstrate." Mya put two fingers in her mouth and let out a shrill whistle. Her pokemon rushed to her side, standing in line. Eon first, Atlas next, and Wormy third as they awaited orders. She snapped and pointed to Sebastian. "Now you, pick how you want to call to order and do it. Be consistent. If he doesn't listen, discipline. Negative punishment is one of the best options--it means you take something away in order to punish. Positive punishment, like hitting or yelling, does nothing but make a pokemon fear you and that's the opposite of respect. It doesn't build a strong bond. No, negative punishment would be no more attention--you never take necessities either. Pokemon tend to love attention so go with that. We ignore him and start to leave. Then we can try to reengage until he responds how we want. Reward with attention--positive reinforcement--and then keep going. Keep in mind, negative reinforcement is taking something away to reinforce a behavior. So be careful about what you do and how you do it. Every action has a consequence. Good or bad."
She looked at Buckshot. "If he doesn't respond negatively to us leaving, we fully go and then bring food back here. We eat but he doesn't until he asks politely. You have to be firm. Baby or not, he's now big enough to have a hunter's instinct so he's not dependent on a mama to feed him. So he's old enough to learn."
With a shrug, Mya smiled. "Well? Go on, Seb. Show me what you got."

Buckshot started making the happiest grawrls as their play started to wane, headbutting into her scritches with closing eyes. Oh that felt nice. It'd been a while since he'd gotten himself groomed by his mama. She'd been teaching him how to do it though! So while he had the attention on him, he leaned fully into it with the most content little noise. Only interrupted when she stopped, making a little whine of protest. He wasn't done though! And her words didn't really make sense to him yet, so he settled for nudging at her hand as Sebastian listened intently to her as she spoke.
Slowly, he nodded understanding. that made sense. Set a limit, and then follow through. Without being cruel, or mean. "Alright. That sounds like a plan. I can do that." Even if he wasn't always the sternest with Everest... it was in part how he'd trained her. She was a rebellious baby, when she would never pause before defending him. She still didn't... but at least now he could easily recall her with a simple call of her name. Or a click of his tongue. That'd probably work the best? It seemed like Mya did the same call with all of them. Still, the researcher took a deep breath. Petting Everest as she slowly soothed in his arms. "I know Ev, I know. It's okay." Let her clamber onto his shoulder and plop down. First clicking his tongue for Beelze, looking right at the lil guy, who'd been trying to follow Atlas.
The happy little teddy bear glanced up and toddled over with a happy noise. Sat himself up on his hind legs and leaned against Seb's knee. To which he smiled and rewarded with many tiny pets. "Hungry Beelze? C'mon, let's get you guys some food." Before he looked to his last pokemon. Who'd been watching the entire exchange, though still nudging at Mya's hand for pets.
Seb glanced once to Mya, before looking directly at Buckshot and clicking his tongue again. "C'mon Buckshot." Mya had just proven that he was tame. That he was sweet, when he wasn't being a terror to society. And had just tired him out. But he tilted his head at the tongue click, blinking once.
"Aer?" A simple questioning noise. Seeming confused. What did the... Well, they had to be friend-shaped. Because the one who he had played with was now a friend-shape. So this other one wasn't food-shape, he was friend-shape! But what did the friend-shape want? A little shuffle. But it had distracted him from trying to continue to hog Mya's attention. He wasn't moving... but he didn't seem to be reacting negatively. Just... confused. Sat himself down because he didn't know what do.

Mya staunchly ignored the young pokemon's asks for attention, knowing that right now it was more important to teach it some basic obedience than anything else. For Pokemon, being as intelligent as they were, obedience training was about safety. A human's feedback in battle could be the different between a success or a defeat. That was why pokemon partnered with humans in the first place, they could see things in the battlefield pokemon often didn't have time to think about. The trainer was less like someone giving orders and more akin to a coach shouting their fighter advice while in the rink. But before a pokemon could be trained to fight, it had to be trained to listen. Mya's pokemon listened because they respected her. That had to come before all else.
She watched carefully, eyeing Buckshot as Sebastian tried to call him over. She crossed her arms. "Demonstrate with one of your more obedient pokemon. Beelze is nice, but doesn't really... show a response to your call, ya know? I suggest Ev, personally. You can also have your most trusted pokemon explain the basics. Poor thing looks confused."
It would be rude to teach Buckshot herself and she wasn't the one he needed to listen to in the first place. He had to recognize Sebastian as his caretaker now. Mya took in a breath and settled to watch, but soon made a small face.
"Sebastian, we gotta work on your 'trainer' face. Or as my mom calls it, a 'mom look'..." she waved a hand around. "It's like... well, you know when you're given that look that makes you go like 'oh shit I better do as I'm told right now', ya know? You gotta get one of those. Like a 'I know you didn't just do that' look to give to your team as needed." She put her hands on her hips. "Ya know... stop having your pokemon boss you around. Its supposed to be a partnership."

"I- No, I don't actually know? I... never got in trouble as a kid." Sebastian put his Everest down with a pat to her head, "And my parents were lax, honestly, since I never really... didn't listen?" He explained, looking kinda sheepish. "But alright... We'll... work on it? First... Everest." She looked up at him, looking unimpressed. But a shared look between them had the cat sighing. Before she turned and walked up to Buckshot. Who tilted his head. That was the food! Half-stepped forward, growling under his breath.
"Buckshot." Sebastian scolded with a sigh. Not quite firm enough, but progress! And well, seemed practiced enough that she knew his pokemon weren't completely undisciplined. "I think he's getting grumpy, or hungry. One of the two." He warned as the ice cat boldly hissed up at the big fossil in retribution. "Everest"
She turned back with a look of protest. "Snea!"
"No, Everest. Be nice, he doesn't understand."
"Sneasel! Sel, Snea!" She pointed at Buckshot, who looked even more confused. Maybe even offended. "Sneasel!"
"I don't care if he started it. You're older than he is, so you have to be responsible. You're too old to still be doing this."
"SNEA!" Oh she was pouting now. Sebastian clicked his tongue a little sharper, and while reluctantly, Everest stopped pulling her hissy fit. She looked up at Buckshot, then pointed at Sebastian with a quieter "Snea, Sneasel, sel, snea." Of indeterminate explanation. Hard to really tell what she was telling their new pokemon. But when Sebastian clicked his tongue again, she was quick to skitter to him and let him scoop her up.
"Was that so hard, Everest?" When she nodded fussily, he smoothed over her feather. Buckshot had his head tilted the other way curiously. Definitely still growly, but... well Seb was right. He was hungry. Mama hadn't fed him in a while. Hadn't eaten herself in a while. He met eyes with his trainer, grawrling. So Seb clicked his tongue, pointing in front of him in show. And... slowly, Buckshot approached. Unsure, but he wasn't being told off for it.

She watched with crossed arms, eyes narrowing at Everest when the bickering started. "HEY!" Mya growled. "We don't act like children here. Behave." There was an air around her words. Someone who worked to build this gym with her own bare hands. It took time to feed all the rock and dirt in here to Jarn, after all. And Mya was not a pushover.
Mya went back to watching, and when she saw Buckshot approach, she slipped some treats out of her pocket and quickly fed him, patting his head and giving him some praise. She looked at Sebastian. "We'll get some real food soon, but," she said as she handed Sebastian a handful of treats, "reward when he does something good within a second of the behavior you want to encourage. This will help him make a positive association. You're using positive reinforcement with treats. Now back-up and try again. Do NOT feed him if he approaches without being called. Ignore him, walk away, and try again."
She backed away and went back to watching, her team with her. While Mya had trained them all, she didn't have the same attitude with them as she did with Buckshot. This was her friend's pokemon and clearly a baby. Her team were all older when she caught them and knew the basics of right and wrong. But Wormy was a challenge. Getting him to listen was a struggle built in stubbornness, but he had eventually earned his respect. Enough for him to evolve, at least.
Eon was the most interested. A young pokemon and already that size... quite the powerful thing. One day he hoped to have a proper gym battle with Sebastian and that pokemon, to see what really could be done after some proper training, love, and care.

The moment food was involved, Buckshot hurried up and licked it off her hand with a loud happy purr. Then kept licking to demand for more, not even noticing when Sebastian was handed more of the snacks. Even as he nodded. Positive reinforcement. He could do that. Idly, he stuffed the treats in his pocket. Much to the dismay of Beelze, who whined up at his trainer. Why did Buckshot get all the treats! He was bein a good boy!
Everest wasn't, but that was beyond the point. she was a little sulky, but she followed her trainer without question when he took a few steps back towards the door. Then clicked his tongue again, getting all three pokemon's attention. Both of his new pokemon were quick to go up to him, and... well, he couldn't resist the teddy bear's face as he gave both a snack. And then laughing as both licked his hands clean. "Guys, you already got the snack! I'm not the snacks!" He scritched behind Beelze's ear, and gently scritched under the Aerodactyl's chin. Which caused more of those happy purrs.
"He really is just a baby." He sounded amazed, again, a smile on his face. "a Baby Aerodactyl. In all my years... I never thought I'd get to say that. Not just an Aerodactyl. But a baby." At a squeak of demand for attention from the little pink bear, "Oh, and of course you're amazing too little man. I know, you're both just hungry little guys." He took another few steps back, and well. Neither waited, both following him closely. So Seb took one glance over to Mya to make sure he was doing it right. As he ignored the searching nuzzles from both. And took another few steps away.

Mya watched with a quiet gaze, studying how Sebastian handled his pokemon. He was a bit of a pushover, but she could understand. She was too, after all. Though hers was in a different way. But this was nice to see. He was gaining some control over Buckshot and that was the first step to a well-trained pokemon. The next step was building proper trust in battle but that couldn't happen if Buckshot wouldn't even listen to orders or recognize Sebastian as someone to listen to.
She nodded at him when he looked over at her. "Good job," she called. "We'll head back up and get him some food, I gotta stop by home too real quick." That egg needed to be checked on. She had forgotten to bring it to the gym today, but she had a few of her non-gym pokemon looking after it. Domino and Vulcan, for example.
Mya led the way out of the gym using the main entrance stairs, encouraging Sebastian to continue to do the call-and-response training until they got to the main floor. I'm not going to be cleaning up his baby puke if he doesn't," she said, shaking her head with a grossed out look on her face. "But how are you feeling? Any better since learning he's not so big, tough, and scary?"
