Arris honed in on the hesitation in Rebecca's tone quickly. Oh. She didn't - he didn't - inwardly, he grimaced. In hindsight he saw how that could be uh... well. He certainly hadn't even thought about coming off that way. Ah, Arceus. Well - best not let it show. Wouldn't be good to alarm or scare the poor girl even more...
"It's no problem. And aren't they though?" He laughed instead, and started walking the way he'd seen Rebecca and Galla first come from. "They can be like those drawing tutorial books. Step one: pull out tent poles. Step two: tent! As if that means literally anything..." He clicked his tongue. "In reality it's not too bad - it's mostly making sure it's secure, more than anything. Was this the way your uh..." He paused for a moment. "Was this the right way?"

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "I mean, there were diagrams, but they were a bit ... unclear." Rebecca meant it as a sort of joke, and she smiled. "So many lines!"Oh, right. It would probably help if she paid attention to their surroundings and figured out which way led back to her camp. She looked around. "Yes, this is the right way. In fact -- there's my tent."Rebecca pointed at the sad, crumpled mess she'd left her tent in, in the bare patch of ground under a nice big tree. Ouch, it looked terrible. She hadn't thought she was that bad at camping. "I had to leave in the middle of setting it up because Galla ran off."no one can stop me from spreading my wings

To his credit, Arris didn't look too shocked or horrified by the state of the campsite. "Ah," he said instead. "You'd only barely gotten a chance to get started - you picked a fantastic spot though! Nice and clear, safe from the elements." He gestured up towards the tree. "Unless you consider falling leaves an 'element' I suppose."
He meandered over to the tent, and crouched down in front of it to survey and examine it. Hmmm... from what it seemed like, it didn't look like it'd be too complex a build - it was just a matter of explaining how they fit together, the best way of hammering in stakes... and letting Rebecca learn hands on while he followed the... "Alright, let's get started!" Oh- wait. Where were the instructions? It wasn't necessary, he didn't think - but it'd help to concisely show. "Do you happen to have that diagram on hand?"

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Oh, what had she done with the instructions? She'd been holding them when Galla ran off, but Rebecca found that she had absolutely no idea where they'd gone after that: she'd been too focused on finding Galla to pay any attention to where she put them. "Um, wait ..."She patted her pockets, because she did sometimes have a habit of tucking papers in there, crumpling them hopelessly and often destroying them in the laundry. Nope. Uh-oh. "I was reading them when I left ... They should be near the tent somewhere." Rebecca started to look around, checking under folds of polyester. "Oh, here they are!"They were a little crumpled and dirty -- she'd just thrown them aside when Galla ran off -- but still legible. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

A twinge of amusement went through Arris while watching Rebecca pat herself down in search for the instructions. Oh boy, did he relate to that - if he had a pokedollar for every time he'd lost or misplaced or 'I'll put this here so I don't lose it and then immediately lose it anyway' as a kid... well, he'd probably have the funds to renovate Hickory Town entirely on his own. "Ah!" He exclaimed when Rebecca found them. "In hindsight I probably should've seen those there. Hoo boy."
'Need glasses there, Arris?' He thought to himself. He shifted over to look at the instructions over Rebecca's shoulder. "Oh I see - yeah this won't be too bad to pick up!" He stood up and dusted himself off. "Let's see here..." He gently picked through the tent fabric to find the poles, setting them aside between them, and then adjusted the tent itself to find the entrance, and then one of the sides. "Grab the other side there, if you would? I'm not sure which way you want the opening to be facing, so you'll guide me there, but it's always a good rule of thumb to have the polyester laid out first - that way when the tent-poles clip together, all you gotta do is slide 'em through. Don't gotta struggle with finding the sleeves or the clips. Saves you a lot of time and frustration, ahah." Arris, bless him, had never been the brightest and best as a kid - he'd often tried brute forcing poles through, and his old, carefully-mended tent wore the battle-scars of his teenaged impatience. Sometimes he'd gotten so annoyed he'd just dealt with it and kept to his sleeping bag curled up by the campfire.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca hurried over to grab the tent where Arris had indicated, listening intently to his instructions. She very much wanted to get good at camping; it would make her travels much easier. And her parents were still a little nervous about sending her off with only Galla for company -- she needed to show them that she could take care of herself. Or, in this case, rely on the kindness of strangers. "The opening should face away from the tree, I think," Rebecca said, adjusting the polyester accordingly -- or so she hoped. So you laid out the polyester first -- smart. She appreciated the advice. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Arris nodded at Rebecca's decision and helped adjust the tent. When it was settled in a satisfactory way, he nodded and straightened back up, picking up one of the sets of tent-poles and handing it over, keeping another for himself. "I agree - makes it easier to get out certainly," he smiled. "So, the nice thing about these poles - they look like a ton of nonsense but they link up like little magnets. Once we have them linked together and straight, we'll slide them into the right spots in the tent itself - like an exoskeleton, kind of? Some have sleeves, some have clips for the poles. Tent should be standing itself up after that - then we just use the stakes to nail it into the ground there so it doesn't blow off!"
He had to admit - it felt nice to actually help someone who wasn't elderly or his boss. And to do something useful, too! Belle was still in his mind, of course. The one perhaps selfish thing about helping out, however - until he took off for town, he didn't have to worry about Belle's safety with another trainer present. It helped put his mind a bit at ease, especially while he thought about had happened with the battle in retrospect.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca smiled when Arris agreed with her. Then she stopped, feeling like she probably looked like a student whose teacher had just complimented her answer. Which she kind of was, but -- she didn't have to act so, so eager. Or easily pleased. Her fellow students tended to laugh at her for that, back in school. "I see," Rebecca said, taking the tent pole and trying to put it together. It took her a bit of fiddling, but she managed it, and gave another delighted smile before remembering again that she was trying not to come off as a weirdo. For once. When the subject came to birds, she was always too engrossed to care, but at other times -- like this one -- she knew very well that she came off as strange. And she didn't want to be strange tonight, not when Arris was being so nice to her. "It's a clever mechanism. And -- yes, I see the sleeve for it."She bent down and started to work the pole into its sleeve. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Arris grinned back at Rebecca's smile when she got the tent-pole together. "Nice!" When the smile slipped off her face, his grin quirked, and when she bent down so he was out of line of sight, his own expression morphed into a mildly confused one. Huh. She'd seemed happy for a moment there - oh, no, he wasn't like, treating her like she was incapable, was he? Oh, Giratina take it. He hoped not. He crouched down back on the opposite side of the tarp and held it steady while Rebecca secured the pole into its sleeve.
When that was done, he nodded and began to work his own pole in through the other sleeve. "Sweet. Alright, can you grab the stakes? Once I've got this one through this should be lookin like a snazzy free-standing tent. It's lookin' good."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Had something in Arris' expression or tone changed? Rebecca wasn't sure. Now she was overthinking it, wondering if he was condescending to her, if he thought she was stupid for not knowing this stuff already, if he was treating her like a child. Stop it, she told herself. He's just being nice. But how would she know if he wasn't? She usually didn't notice people's bad intentions -- their sarcasm, their patronizing, their teasing -- until it was too late. And now that she was out in the real world, the stakes were a bit higher than in the schoolyard. Trying not to give any sign of her worried thoughts, she finished putting the pole through and went to look for the stakes. They were in her camping bag, which she'd left here -- what if someone had stolen it -- while she went to chase Galla. "Chi chi!" the Torchic told Rebecca brightly, watching them work, and Rebecca had to smile. It wasn't so bad. Arris was just being nice. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The taller man grinned at Galla. "Yeah - you're gonna be snug as a --" he paused, and looked genuinely contemplative for a long moment. "...I suppose making an analogy to bugs is wholly inaccurate to you, isn't it?" He looked at Rebecca, eyes questioning. "Snug as... a chick in a nest? Is that even accurate?" 'Do Pokemon birds make nests? Do they even lay eggs? How did any of that work?'
He was so lost in this train of thought, Arris had completely forgotten his previous apprehension of coming off as rude or condescending for the moment. It showed in his body language relaxing significantly, leaving him looking like a student who'd forgotten to study in the middle of a pop-quiz. "I... huh - oh! Shoot, sorry, I just-" he gestured at himself helplessly before shaking his head and returning to helping Rebecca with the tent. 'Earth to space cadet, come in Arris. Trying to be helpful to a nice trainer and not make an ass of ourselves, remember?' "Er. Sorry. My mind runs away with me sometimes, ahaha. Alright, well!" He made sure the tent was steady where it was - it seemed to be, they'd done a good job, he thought! "So, some people carry a hammer with them to get the stakes in?" He gestured to the loops where the stakes went. "I'm lazy though and don't carry a hammer everywhere, because... why - so I just use my feet - but whatever gets 'em in the ground works." Probably.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal The reference to chicks in nests brightened Rebecca's spirits; the pleasant topic distracted her from her worries about how Arris might perceive her. She smiled. "Yes, Torchics grow up in nests, as do many other bird Pokemon ... They're called hatchlings until their feathers grow in, then nestlings while they're in town, and fledglings when they learn to fly."Then Arris jumped back to attention and so did Rebecca, though she added, "Don't worry. Happens to me all the time."She wasn't about to scold anyone else for zoning out when she spent more time lost in her thoughts than in the real world -- or at least she had before she'd had Galla and real Pokemon to drag her away from her dreams of them. "So, like this?" Rebecca stuck a stake into the ground, then stepped on it with all her weight to drive it into the soil. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Arris stretched out his shoulders before crouching down to look at the stake Rebecca had just driven. Well - it looked pretty solid to him! He didn't want to mess with the stake lest he accidentally loosen it himself. "Looks good and in there to me!" He stood back up, and stepped out of the way. Arris sent a smile of appreciation her way though - it was nice to not be judged for his flighty thought patterns. Arceus knew how much he got in trouble for it as a kid.
"I didn't know that at all - about bird Pokemon," he said. "I'll have to remember that - it's really neat! I like to think I know some things about Pokemon, but I'm still learning so much every day, heh." Arris rubbed the back of his head, and picked up a stake himself to drive in. "It's always nice to know more, though."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca smiled at the praise and got down to work putting in the other stakes, glad that there was a part of the tent construction she could do on her own. When Arris spoke again, she looked up from the stake she was pressing into the ground. "I know a lot about bird Pokemon," she said, then realized that sounded like she was bragging, when she'd only intended it as a statement of fact. Brushing her hair out of her eyes, she added rather hurriedly, "Not much about anything else, but birds are kind of my thing."With the stakes in, the tent stood proudly under the tree, ready to face the elements. Rebecca paused and looked at it with pride. Now she was ready to spend the night out in the wilds. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Arris stepped around to stand next to Rebecca, grinning at the tent. It looked damn good - he hoped he'd been of some form of help. "Yeah?" He tilted his head at the shorter trainer, "That kind of knowledge is great in this new world of ours, y'know? Especially with your partner there. She'll flourish because of that."
And... it wouldn't hurt for Arris to know that knowledge either, maybe - plus, if he was gonna be a trainer, maybe making friends that were also trainers would be... really nice, actually. It hit Arris with a clench of his heart in that moment that he had no real friends his age, both growing up or now. Mya was the first. Maybe Rebecca...?
Casually, he checked his own bag to make sure he still had all his things, and then double checked Belle's Pokeball. It was time to head back to town and get her taken care of. He fidgeted slightly, pushing down the mild fear of 'oh Arceus what if she doesn't want to be friends and I'm just being weird' choking up his throat before putting out, "I uh - well! I guess that makes it time for me to head out then. I think you've got things totally under cover. Though, while I'm thinking about it... there aren't really many trainers still out here yet, y'know? It's a whole thing we're all in - and we probably could all use the mutual support... So, do you - maybe want to keep in contact, sometime?"
