time: day, evening weather: clear characters: Rebecca Cardinal , Arris Yule battle mechanics: freeform ❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca could go easily go home at night -- she lived in Summerhill, right at the end of Route 2. But she wanted to be a Pokemon trainer, traveling the land to find and catch all the birds that inhabited it, and that meant learning to really travel the land, camping in wild places. She figured that here, within easy walking distance of her parents' farm, would be the best place to make her first attempt. If things went bad, she could just go home. "All right, so first you put the stakes in the ground, then connect them at the top ..." As was her habit -- and had been even before Galla came out of her Pokeball -- Rebecca talked to her Torchic as she worked. Usually Galla listened attentively. This time, however, Rebecca heard rustling in the grass and a distant "Chii?"
"Galla?" Rebecca extricated herself from the half-set-up tent only to find the grass closing after her departing Pokemon. "Galla! Where are you going?"
Hurrying after Galla, Rebecca soon found her destination: a strange man's campsite, and the Bounsweet at his side. Oh dear. "Bounsweet's delicious scent often attracts bird Pokemon ..." Rebecca muttered fretfully to herself as she watched Galla make a beeline for the Grass Pokemon. "Galla, no! Come back!"no one can stop me from spreading my wings

"Okay, okay Belle!" Arris was laughing at his little Bounsweet's antics, as she bounded all around him in little hops while he cut up some algae blocks for them to share. "Patience, little Poliwag-" Belle looked at him with distinct confusion. She wasn't a... "-You aren't starving, now..."
He hadn't set up camp too long ago, and he was excited for it. It'd been a hot minute since he'd gone camping - and now there was a whole new meaning to the word! A pokemon partner, a world that was no longer silent and bleak, filled with the noises of wild creatures and life. And Belle was so eager! Or... at least Arris thought she was? So far, her moods had been "Go go go go!!!" or "I will pass out in my trainer's arms for the next three hours." He couldn't fault her for it. She was just a little thing. And she was so darn cute!
"Chiii!!!"
Arris' head shot up in the same moment Belle twirled and stared at the taller grass near their camp with mouth wide open. "Boun?" she said, curious. And there - shooting out of the grass like a little comet, was a Torchic! And behind the Torchic, a trainer chasing after, calling for it. 'What in Deprin?'
Arris' mind shut down for a moment in surprise, watching the oncoming collision like a deerling in headlights. "Uh-!?" he sputtered unintelligently.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "Galla!" Rebecca called again, futilely, as Galla jumped at the Bounsweet. "No, don't -- "
Too late. Galla gave the Bounsweet a good peck, and Rebecca winced. A bit sheepishly, she stepped forward into the man's campsite and snatched at Galla, but the Torchic dodged her hands. Rebecca hissed, "Galla, don't make me put you back in your ball."
Oh, she should probably say something to the man whose Pokemon Galla had just assaulted. She looked up. "Um, hi. Sorry about this. She's usually much better-behaved! I hope your Bounsweet isn't hurt!"
This was a mess. Rebecca had never been angry at Galla before, and she wasn't about to start, but she was ... disappointed. Yes, that was right. Not angry, just disappointed. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

'Uh-oh.'
The peck hit Belle pretty solidly - in shock, she cried out and tottered backwards before retreating to hide behind Arris' legs. The man's eyes were blown open in shock, and he raised his hands up as if in surrender, trying to figure out what quite had just happened. "Oh, uh - hi!" he said. "She's a feisty lil' thing, huh? Eager for battle." As Galla dodged the girl's hands, Belle narrowed her little eyes and bounced around, eager to play keep-away from the little chicken pokemon - even though the keep-away toy was herself.
"Belle'll be alright I think! A little surprised, but she'll heal right up - I think she's more shocked than hurt..." Not that Arris would really know if she was, having no experience with pokemon himself, but... oh, there was a thought. This was a great opportunity to get more experience, wasn't it! Their first pokemon battle! "They already seem raring to go - we could step in and let them have a little spar, if you want - let em' get the energy out of em?"
'And it'll be a great way for Belle to show the world what she can do!' he thought.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "Well, Fire and Flying moves are both super effective against Grass types like Bounsweet," Rebecca began, about to tell this other trainer that the potential for Galla to hurt his Bounsweet was higher than he thought -- though she didn't think Galla actually knew any Fire or Flying moves yet. Then, as Galla continued to chase the Bounsweet, the trainer suggested a battle. Rebecca's eyes widened; she'd never been in an actual Pokemon battle before. For a moment she wasn't sure she wanted to; what if Galla got hurt? But battling would also help Galla get stronger, which in turn would help them go to more places, find more birds ... Rebecca smiled. "All right, you're on! Galla -- we're battling!"
Galla paused in her pursuit and looked up at Rebecca. "Chi? Chi!"
The Torchic came over to her trainer and stood ready at her side. Rebecca turned to the stranger. "All right, whenever you're ready, you can call start."
Galla's statblock: Torchic // Level 1 // female Max HP | Attack | Defense | Speed | 9 | 13 | 9 | 9 |
Ability: Blaze - The power of Torchic's Fire-type moves is boosted by 50% (x1.5) when its HP is below 33% of its maximum Held item: none Moves: Growl, Scratch no one can stop me from spreading my wings

"Alright! Ready for a first battle, Belle?" Arris grinned at his (partially damaged) Bounsweet, who looked at him with wide eyes before nodding with a look of determination. She bounced over to take her place in front of her trainer, attempting - and notably, failing - to look intimidating. The attempt was there, at least.
Arris took a deep breath. He closed his eyes for a moment, and flexed his fingers which were trembling slightly in anticipation. 'Okay. Okay... Young pokemon generally only know a few moves... Scratch, Tackle, Pound. Belle doesn't have claws and her leaves are too short to 'pound' anything, so tackle? Right. Okay... here we go. Yeah. Yeah, we can do this! I believe in you, Belle!' Arris' eyes snapped open, his brows set in determination, and he raised his hand in command."Sweet, here we go, let's start! Belle, use tackle!"
"Bounswee--!" Belle moved as if to start forward, and then paused, stopped, and looked up at Arris with a look of mild confusion. "...Swee?" Arris nodded at her encouragingly. Belle looked... concerned, for a long moment, before turning back to Galla with a determined expression and bounding forward. "Boun boun!" She cried out - but instead of tackling, it seemed as if Belle just... bounced straight over Galla's head. It seemed as if Tackle... had no effect?
'Maybe she just overshot and missed,' Arris thought quickly, "That's okay Belle, we'll try again!"

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Was that a Tackle? It didn't exactly look like one, and it definitely didn't work like one. But Rebecca needed to focus on winning this battle, not on the Bounsweet's strange little moves -- as long as it didn't do any damage to Galla, it could dance all it pleased. "Galla, use Scratch," Rebecca ordered. Galla sprung into action at once, charging the Bounsweet and scratching fiercely at it. Yes! That ought to do some damage. And the faster they concluded this battle -- the faster we win, Rebecca corrected herself -- the lower the chances of Galla actually taking any harm. Rebecca would love it if she could get through the battle without taking a hit. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

The scratch hit Belle dead on - fierce indeed! Belle tottered back with a little cry, looking a bit wobbly and worse for wear - but she tried to steady herself and shake it off. Didn't look like she could take much more, though... Arris' brow furrowed, a little concerned. She was gonna be okay, right? Of course she was... they were an all-star duo - they could still pull this off! "It's okay Belle! Hang in there, sweetheart - let's try it again!"
The Bounsweet narrowed her eyes in a determined expression, and nodded. "Bouu-oun!" Points for determination, if nothing else! She bounced forward slightly, before tottering to the side, and launching forward... this time right past the Torchic. Her bouncing after came much to the same effect as the first attempt - which was to say, nothing.
Arris schooled his expression into something resembling neutrality, but his fingers were shaking again, and a worried quirk of his lip betrayed him. This wasn't right. It could be he just needed to work on accuracy with Belle, but... there was something just wrong about this. What was happening? "Hang in there, Belle..."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca was starting to feel a little bad for her opponent, honestly. His Pokemon was just so ... ineffective. It seemed kind of mean to fight anything, Pokemon or person, who didn't hit back. And it was definitely an underwhelming first battle -- she would have liked to mark the occasion with something amazing ... Although she knew the chances of a truly exciting battle were low considering how few moves Galla knew right now. At least she was doing better than that Bounsweet. "Galla, Scratch again," Rebecca ordered with confidence. She wasn't going to let feeling a bit bad get in the way of their victory. Even in an underwhelming first battle, it was better to win than to lose -- and better to win quickly and get it over with than to draw things out. Galla had to actually hop after the Bounsweet a bit to get in Scratching range, that was how badly Belle had missed her. Then she delivered a good, proper Scratch. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Belle stumbled away after the final scratch. She stood again after a few long moments, trembling slightly... and then inevitably collapsed back onto the ground, fainted. Galla and Rebecca had more than handily won the battle.
Arris' eyes widened in shock. Oh no... oh, no, Belle... Arris grimaced, his expression tight, and walked over silently to where his pokemon lay, K.O.'d. He carefully picked her up into one of his arms, and pat her on the head. "It's alright, you tried hard. Thank you, Belle - you go ahead and rest and you'll be tip-top next thing you know." He didn't think trying to photosynthesize would be helpful unconscious, so he pulled her pokeball out of his pocket and returned her to the ball.
Lowering his hands and returning the ball to his pocket, inhaled slowly, his shoulders sagging with the weight of the great sigh that followed. He approached the other with a few long steps... and reached his hand out, a lopsided grin on his face. "Well, we lost - but that was still a good battle. Thanks for it - and hi! I'm Arris." His gaze drifted down to the Torchic. "And congrats to you too, lil' one - you're gonna be a tough one to beat!" There was no point in being angry, to Arris. The trainer did nothing wrong - she won fair and square. And Belle would heal up, she'd be okay. Any anger would have to be on him himself, for failing Belle - and he needed to figure out what went wrong... but even then, this gal didn't need to see his disappointment in himself. That wouldn't be sportsmanlike.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "Good job, Galla!" Rebecca lifted her Torchic off the ground and hugged her. She might be a bit disappointed at how underwhelming the battle had been, but she was also glad that Galla hadn't gotten hurt. It didn't occur to her until after she'd twirled Galla around in delight that her celebration might be seen as gloating. She turned to her opponent, still holding Galla. "Um, oh, yes, thank you."Arris. OK. That meant she owed him her name. "I'm Rebecca, and this is Galla."She hoisted Galla up on her shoulder so she could take Arris' hand; her handshake was a bit awkward, but she did her best. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

It twinged Arris' pride a bit to watch the smaller trainer celebrate - but he held his face in check with that lopsided grin regardless. It wouldn't do to look like an utter cad when it was his own failure as a trainer that lost the battle, none of their faults. Arris nodded as they shook hands, and let go fairly quickly - handshakes weren't really his thing, preferring to bow, but the gesture felt like a necessary and inclusive one. He bowed anyway after, and relaxed his shoulders back with a smile.
"Nice to meet you Rebecca, Galla. That's a cute name for your Torchic." His hand found his way back into his pocket, where Belle's ball was. His fingers ran over the pokeball's surface gently, as if attempting to comfort the pokemon on the inside. "You two out here camping? It's perfect weather for it."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "Thank you," Rebecca said. "'Gallus' was once a scientific name for certain species of bird Pokemon, including Torchic and its evolutions. So ... Galla."
Galla wiggled to inform Rebecca that she had been held for quite long enough, thank you, so Rebecca put her down. The Torchic ran in a circle around the two trainers, demonstrating that she had plenty of extra energy after the fight, as if to say that she could do this all day.
"Yes, it's kind of our first time camping," Rebecca said, a bit sheepishly. "I haven't even got the tent set up yet. But we have to learn if we're going to travel around and catch Pokemon, and the weather is nice."

"Really?" Arris let out a 'huh' as he took in this new information. "Well, dang. I've learned something new today! That's really neat."
The tall trainer watched as Galla ran around them in circles, letting out a chuckle of amusement. The little Torchic certainly was a firecracker - though that made sense, Rebecca had mentioned something about fire moves, right? Fire moves, fire type... He glanced back up when Rebecca mentioned they'd never gone camping before, eyebrows raised. "Well shoot," he said, "That's true, it's something to learn in the future for traveling. Camping's a ton of fun. I'm gonna have to head back to Summerhill to make sure Belle's in tip-top shape at a Pokemon Center, but if you'd like, since I have the experience, I can walk you back to your campsite and help you set yourselves up before going?" He remembered getting help from other folks in campsites when it was his first time, too. Had he not gotten that friendly assistance back then, he probably never would've grown to love camping so much. Didn't hurt to offer to pay that kindness forward.

❂ Rebecca Cardinal "Oh!" A moment's hesitation. Rebecca tended to be wary of strangers. Her parents had warned her many times that not everyone was who they seemed to be; her mother often told her that she needed to be extra careful because of her tendency to miss social cues, to fail to notice little signs of danger that might tip off a more perceptive individual. But ... surely Arris was all right? He was a Pokemon trainer. Rebecca couldn't imagine that happy little Bounsweet following a bad person. And besides, if he tried anything, Galla could Scratch the hell out of him. "Yes, that would be very kind of you -- the instructions for the tent were a little confusing."no one can stop me from spreading my wings
