❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca's smile widened when Arris replied to her knowledge with encouragement rather than derision. OK, so he was the first trainer she'd ever met, but -- so far, trainers were nice. This was nice. "Thank you, I hope she does. I've spent a lot of time thinking about how I'd take care of her if she could ever come out, and ... now she has!"Galla poked her head around the tent -- she'd been examining it from all sides -- and cheeped, echoing Rebecca's tone. "Chi!"Rebecca blushed at Arris' question. She wasn't used to trading contact info with people, since she'd been very low on friends all her life. But ... yeah, they should. Arris was nice, and it would be good to know other trainers. And if his pleasant facade turned out to be only skin-deep, she could always block his number. "Sure, let's trade numbers."She pulled her phone out of her pocket. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Arris grinned, sliding his own phone out of his pocket too. He quickly unlocked it before pulling up his contacts screen - which he twinged slightly at, being reminded that his list was.... woefully short. His grandparents, a couple of old neighbors, his old boss, and the Professor and Mya. He opened up a new contact before turning his phone around to hold it out to Rebecca, so she could input her information. "There we are," he hummed.
He chuckled at Galla's reply, tilting his head slightly. "Seems she agrees! I take it you've had her for a while, then?" He wondered to himself what it would've been like if he'd had Belle for ages. What if she'd been his grandmother's Pokemon - an inherited partner? Would they be closer than he and Belle were now? Would it be different? He supposed it didn't really matter - he loved the little berry. He hoped she wouldn't be too mad at him after today...

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca quickly typed her name and number into Arris' phone, then handed it back to him. "Just text me so I have your number."Looking down at Galla, Rebecca smiled and bent over to pick her up. The Torchic sat happily in Rebecca's arms. "My parents gave me Rebecca's Pokeball when I was twelve -- we had her from when our family kept Torchics on their farm. Obviously I couldn't let her out then, but I carried her everywhere with me, talked to her all the time ..."Well, there was no need to make it obvious that she hadn't had any human friends to talk to. Rebecca hurried on: "I like to think that she knows me pretty well, after all that time."no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Arris quirked his phone up in acknowledgement before rotating it to face him. He quickly pulled up the new contact in his phone, and shot off a quick text that was, in summation, a very sad attempt at making a text-symbol based Torchic emoji. It was... an attempt. Modern message habits had never been Arris' forte. He also quickly shot off a 'sorry, it's Arris' before pocketing his phone again.
His gaze softened at the look of happy trainer and Pokemon. That was awesome that they'd known each other for so long - or well, theoretically. Ish. However that worked. It made him wonder if Pokemon were self aware of what was going on around them while in a Pokeball... that'd be really neat. "Woah, you guys had a - uh. Normal farm? Torchic ranch? That's really cool!" It made him think of his conversation with another trainer, Mya, a day or two prior. They'd actually talked about what Pokemon might've been used for. Torchic farming was really interesting. It wouldn't have been something he'd have thought of. Mildly, Arris wondered what they would have been used for. Based on their battle, Galla was certainly fierce - maybe as protectors? Hmm...
Ah, Belle. He pulled her ball out of his pocket to gaze at it fondly. "I hope she and I are able to have a friendship like that eventually. I really do think that's awesome."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca gave Arris' first attempt a bemused smile -- she couldn't tell what it was supposed to be, and thought his phone might have glitched -- and then quickly added him to her contacts. (Her contacts list wasn't exactly full either -- just her parents and a few relatives.) "We used to have a normal farm. Now it's all mushrooms." Rebecca shrugged. It wasn't that she hated mushroom farming, but when she considered the idea that she could have grown up on a farm full of lively Pokemon instead ... "Not that there's anything wrong with mushrooms, but they're not very interesting. We used to keep Torchics for protection, and for the eggs! A Combusken can herd Wooloo or Mareep almost as well as a Yamper, if you train it right."Rebecca smiled, an expression of sincere delight, and stroked Galla's head. "Thank you! I'm sure you'll be able to build a strong bond with your Pokemon too. It just takes time."And maybe figuring out what she can actually do in battle, Rebecca didn't say, because that might be rude. But really, what had been going on in that fight? The Bounsweet clearly had no idea how to tackle. no one can stop me from spreading my wings

Ahhhh, mushrooms. As... interesting a texture as they were - as was all food in Deprin, really, come to think of it - they were one of the main staples of the region. The farm must be a big backbone to the community, then. That was hugely respectable. They were able to adapt at least, it sounded like. He'd ask if they were thinking to change back to Pokemon ranching, but that felt a bit too nosy. "Oh huh! You wouldn't think a bird to be a herder, but I guess evolutions are bigger, and stronger too, aren't they? That makes a lot of sense." Also, eggs - did... people eat them? Arris felt like that was something he should've known but also didn't voice. No sense making himself look ignorant many times over.
His mild smile widened at Rebecca's own smile. Happiness was infectious to the taller trainer. "That it does. We'll get there, bit by bit! Friends for a lifetime - still a lot of time left." Plus... he needed to train with her more. And message Professor Yew on his way to town. Maybe she'd know what went wrong with that battle... because it certainly wasn't normal. It might've been his first battle, but even he could tell something had gone sideways. And speaking of... Arris settled on his feet before backing away a few steps in preparation to go. "Ah, I'm dawdling, aren't I? I should get going for Belle's sake. Thank you for the first battle - even if it didn't go well for Belle and I, it was a lot of fun! And it's been really nice to meet you."

❂ Rebecca Cardinal Rebecca nodded. "Combusken and Blaziken are dual-typed, Fire and Fighting -- they're really impressive! Galla is going to grow up to be so big and strong!"She pressed her face into the Torchic's feathers. Galla waved her tiny little wings in agreement: "Chi!"Thinking about Blaziken almost distracted Rebecca from Arris' departure. She put Galla down so that she could wave him goodbye. "It's been really nice to meet you too! We enjoyed the battle, thank you! And good luck!"Did wishing him good luck imply that she expected him to need it? Oops. Well, too late to do anything about that; she'd already said it. Now she'd better turn her attention to the night's camping: dinner, and then it was time to see how well their tent-building had worked. Winning a battle, making a new friend, and getting some camping advice: Rebecca could scarcely imagine a better start to her journey. |FINISHED| no one can stop me from spreading my wings
