Once your character is completed, approved, and has a tracker, they'll need a starter Pokemon to begin their adventures in the Deprin Region.
There are two ways to acquire starter Pokemon in Deprin: through the Pokemon Laboratory and through inheritance.
Eighty years ago, when Pokemon disappeared, people began to notice that Pokemon in their Pokeballs stayed safe -- as long as they remained in their Pokeballs. If they were released from their Pokeballs even briefly, they would vanish. Thousands of Pokemon were kept in balls to keep them safe, and in those balls they have not aged or changed, simply waited ... and waited ... to come out.
Over the years, the Pokemon Laboratory has collected thousands of Pokeballs for study and safekeeping. With the return of Pokemon, the Lab is now distributing these Pokemon to interested individuals so that trainers may once again walk the land of Deprin.
If you choose to go through the Lab for your starter Pokemon, you will receive a selection of six random stage-1 Pokemon from which you may choose your starter. You may either do this OOC or IC -- while you may request a slate of potential Pokemon and make your selection OOC, you may also request a thread in the Lab with Professor Yew in which your character will choose their starter IC.
If you want to establish a relationship with Professor Yew right off the bat, you should choose a thread rather than selecting a starter OOC -- if you select your starter OOC, your character receives their Pokemon from NPC assistants.
You receive +15 EXP for choosing a Lab starter instead of an inherited one, and another +50 EXP for completing a starter thread with Professor Yew.
"Inheriting" a Pokemon means that your character receives a Pokeball from a source other than the lab, whether that's an older relative passing one down, finding one in an attic, buying one on the black market -- the exact method by which your character receives this Pokeball is up to you, though you will be asked to explain it when selecting your starter, so have something in mind.
You may inherit any Pokemon from this list (primarily stage 1 Pokemon that are not legendary, mythical, Ultra Beasts, or otherwise special). You may also choose the gender of your Pokemon when inheriting, though staff will still generate their statblock for you.
You do not receive any EXP for inheriting a Pokemon.
