Farrah hid a wide yawn behind her hand, looking a little dazed as she slumped against the counter, looking at the barista helplessly. "I didn't realize you all opened quite so early..."
"Boss said you didn't need to be here 'till nine, Ms. Whitaker." The man raised an eyebrow, gaze sympathetic as he slid the musician a large mug of coffee.
"Ugh. Gross. Ms. Whitaker makes me feel old. Farrah, please. Thank you." She looked like she'd considered faceplanting onto the cool granite countertop for a nap, but instead buried her nose in the coffee, taking a long sip before sighing. Ah, sweet, sweet bean juice. Farrah hated the bitterness, actually. But she refused to drink it any other way because it just wouldn't work otherwise. "I got here when y'all got here because we're gonna do this right. It was of my volition, don't worry. Equipment's setup, speaker's out, the terrace is clear and -- oh, you've made sure it'll be fine for battles, right?"
When the barista nodded, Farrah grinned, downed the rest of the coffee in one gulp, and grimaced as she burnt her tongue before sliding off the stool. "Thanks for the coffee - I appreciate it. Hour's about to ring though, and we're about to open, so I'm gonna hop outside and be ready!"
As if on queue, Farrah raised her hands dramatically towards the ceiling, pointing towards the clock as she flounced out the door just as it began to chime the new hour. Nine o'clock was opening! And now it was time for folks to start filtering in - both the early morning breakfast-goers, and the early morning battlers.
She settled down on a stool near where her guitar case was resting, on one side of the terrace battle-field. Pulling the extremely worn out instrument onto her lap, she began strumming an old classic battle tune: relaxed, patient, and ready for challengers. The terrace was clearly visible to patrons of the bistro, who could enjoy the battles with their meals. It also allowed potential challengers to see her and be enticed with the free meal and potential for the winning prize.
Cocoa and Vanillish was open, and it was time for Pokemon battles!

Kain steps into Cocoa and Vanillish, yawning softly. He looks over at the barista, heading to the counter. "So, I heard there is a free meal involving a Pokemon battle? Do I have to win to get the meal? Who am I facing? Is your food Pokemon safe?" He looks over at Farrah, tapping his foot along with her playing. "That's my jam, love..." He looks back at the barista, waiting for an answer. "Don't mean to blast you with questions, but I want to know what I'm gonna feed my Torchic."

The barista looked up from the counter with a nod. "You heard right sir, yes. You don't have to win - meal for yourself and your Pokemon are included by participating. Pokemon food are new recipes based on newly growing berries, as those seem to be a universal across their diets regardless of species." The barista tilted their head in thought as if confirming this true in their thoughts. "Yes. And it's quite alright, sir. We appreciate forethought and care here."
They gestured out towards the back terrace, where Farrah was in view playing on their guitar. "That will be your opponent this morning; Farrah Whitaker. She will be choosing a Pokemon to be your opponent based on the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen partner, to keep the battle on equal grounds. Breakfast will be after your battle as a rest for a good fight. Feel free to head out to your opponent at your leisure, and enjoy your battle!"
Farrah glanced up from her guitar, hearing the conversation going on inside. Not once did she stop playing the music as she did so, but catching the eye of the trainer talking to the barista, a quiet smile crossed her face as she nodded in greeting. He looked like a tough customer. A nice challenge first thing in the morning? Farrah was down for that.

My pokemon is going to eat either way, but I only plan on eating when I win." "Hey there yaself," Farrah nodded to Kain as he came out to the terrace. "I take it you're my first early morning challenger then. Gym leader, eh?" She raised their eyebrows with an intrigued look. Exactly the kind of person that Farrah was looking for in terms of the growing League. People who showed interest, knew what was up... this was the exact kind of opportunity to test the strength and character that she'd been hoping for! And first thing in the morning, too. Nice.
"I do believe so. Appreciate the fire in believin' in your team. How's this for ya..." pausing the music only just long enough to give a glance over Kain carefully, Farrah pulled a Pokeball off their belt and tossed it up, before diving into a stronger tune; a riffing rendition of an old fired up gym classic from the Hoenn region. The ball spilt open with light, revealing a massive serpent with blade-like teeth. It was Farrah's Seviper, Mosh.
The musician glanced up from her guitar with a relaxed half-grin. "Mosh will be your opponent this morning. If this tune suits you, go ahead and let your partner out, get settled, and we'll dive right on in."
OOC: Farrah (myself) will roll battles for this thread. Seviper has a higher speed and will go first.

He sends out Torchic, "You ready little guy? Your target is the big snake...try not to burn the place down, ok?" "Ah," Farrah hummed, "Quite the fated coincidence for this battle then, I believe. A fire type indeed native to the champions of Hoenn. Mosh is native to that region as well." Her easy smile faded into something of sharp concentration a moment later though, as she locked eyes with her Seviper. It was time to get serious for battle. "If you two are goin' all out, we are too. Mosh, get in there!"
There was a warning look in Farrah's eyes - something the massive serpent seemed to pick up on, as he let out a sigh before whipping around and lunging at the Torchic! The Seviper wrapped himself around the fire chicken before squeezing down sharply in a wrap attack, eager to get the battle started.
OOC: Seviper has a higher speed and goes first. Seviper used Wrap! It does 2 damage.
Torchic has 8/10 HP, and has the Wrapped Condition!

Kain chuckles softly, "If Mosh wants to get close, let's give them a taste of some flame! Use Ember!" Torchic lets out a burst of flame towards Mosh, squawking indignantly at being wrapped by the snake.

The burst of flame hit true - smack into the eye of Mosh's that was facing down closest to Torchic. With a furious pained hiss, the serpent reeled back, thrashing his head about and trying to get away from the fire while also refusing to let go of the little bird in his coils. The result was another sharp squeeze in the pained panic.
"Mosh, get ahold of yourself and hang in there. You've got Torchic right there, use Bite!" Farrah commanded, brows narrowing slightly. Unfortunately, the Seviper seemed too preoccupied, and his lashing fangs only snapped down on air instead. An unfortunate miss... but one Farrah would be sure was rectified.
OOC: Torchic uses Ember and does 4 damage. Seviper has 11/15 HP. Seviper uses Bite, but misses! Torchic takes 2 damage from the Wrapped Condition. Torchic has 6/10 HP!

Kain smirks, "Attaboy! While his head is still close from that bite, give him another blast of Ember!! Make him regret wrapping you!!" Torchic blasts another gout of flame at Mosh's head, trying to force the large snake to let go and back off. The small bird looks more furious than fearful at Mosh considering them to be prey. The flame definitely did hit home on the Seviper's head again... but it perhaps had the opposite effect intended. With a snarling hiss, Mosh reared his head back, lashing around again in pain. He was definitely burned this time, and it felt like his jaw and neck were searing. Unbearable! Painful! He would not be beaten by such a small creature - no, certainly not!
"Mosh," Farrah's voice was sharp and commanding. Her tone brokered no nonsense or continued shenanigans of the predator Pokemon. The call of the Seviper's name alone seemed to give him pause, and with a deep rattling hiss he crashed his bladed tail-tip into the ground, centering back on the Torchic. "Stop panicking. Control your anger productively." Taking a moment as if contemplating this, Mosh reared his head back - the pain in his neck making him wince - to keep it out of range, and clamped down harder on Torchic once again, rather than retreating!
OOC: Torchic uses Ember and does 4 damage! Seviper is burned! Taking burn damage, Seviper has 5/15 HP!
Seviper uses Wrap, and does 1 damage. Torchic takes 2 damage from Wrapped condition, and has 3/10 HP!
Torchic's Blaze ability has activated!

Kain frowns slightly, "Don't worry about it Torchic! Aim for Mosh's body, he can't dodge unless he lets go of you!! Give him all you've got with one last Ember!!" Torchic puffs up as much as he can and blasts a decent sized gout of flame towards Mosh's body, knowing that Mosh can either let him go and try to dodge, or take the hit. The determination from Torchic as a Pokemon species was strong. When in a pinch, their flames seemed to burn ever hotter; this was true in Kain's Torchic's case as well, for the Ember this time was something of a majestic blaze that scorched along the Seviper's scales. He seemed to withstand it, refusing to let go, giving off a frightful stare... but the flames proved to be too much. With one last tired hiss, Mosh collapsed onto the ground, the tight coils of his Wrap loosening with unconsciousness after one last exhausted squeeze.
Farrah simply watched for a long moment, before breaking into a slow smile. Letting the music fade, she slid their guitar to her back, reaching for her belt a moment later. Retrieving Mosh's Pokeball, she returned the fainted creature, before slowly applauding, offering Kain an expression of pleased pride. "Now that... was an excellent first match. It really came down to the wire. Congratulations on your win, you two. Torchic, you performed admirably."
Pausing for a moment, Farrah simply looked Kain up and down. He seemed capable. Torchic was trained well, they both had good attitudes. Passionate trainers. And he wanted to be a gym leader. She wondered how he felt about... hm. "Breakfast for both yourself and your Pokemon, and the prize of new boots to the both of you. They're all yours. Our lovely barista will present 'em to you when you get your meals." It was mostly due to a fair number of different boot sizes and styles; different sizes for different people, different types to be utilized or held by different Pokemon. She looked back up to Kain's eyes before walking over, offering her hand in a congratulatory shake. "Name's Farrah, by the way. So, future gym-leader you say, was it?"
OOC: Torchic uses Ember, boosted by Blaze, and does 6 damage. Seviper has fainted!
The battle's winner is Kain! Congratulations!

Kain sighs in relief, looking down at a thoroughly squeezed Torchic. "Good job little buddy...I'll get you healed up and a hot meal, sound good? I'm proud of you!" Torchic kicks the ground sheepishly, before glaring at Mosh's pokeball. "Chick-KEY!!" Kain returns the indignant chicken to his pokeball. "Sorry about him, he is a bit feisty. Yeah, I was thinking about starting up a Pokemon gym...not right now, I need more of a team, what kinda gym leader only has one Pokemon? Why, you interested?" Farrah chuckled softly at the fierce attitude from the Torchic. "Nah, he's all good. I appreciate a fighter." It was good to have a burning spirit! And he seemed under good control by his trainer, so any perceived aggressiveness wasn't a problem at all in Farrah's opinion. In all honesty, she couldn't blame the feelings towards Mosh either - Arceus knew that her starter, Decibel, felt the same way too after their first meeting.
The musician did grin at the question of interest, though. "I'd agree that I'm interested, yes." She couldn't quite say that she was a gym leader herself yet - after all, there was still the exhibition match coming up to announce the League's return, and the Gym was mid-renovation in town. It would be more official after the exhibition anyway. It was all in paper, yes. But it wasn't in public. "You could say that if you do go for Leader, you and I'll be seein' a lot more of each other than a passin' meetin' in a local bistro. I've a personal vestment in the League's development myself."
