Bright, crisp, and early in the morning, the Mistveil Laboratory is already full of life. Starter appointments have only just begun, but the hustle and bustle of the laboratory is never truly gone. Trainers mill about in the lobby -- some by the massive bulletin board by the door, some talking in the lounge, their Pokemon at their feet, and a few already present and waiting for their day to get their very first Pokemon.
Dr. Devereux Abremont, aspiring Pokemon Professor and himself a chipper morning person, is preparing for exactly these appointments. A quick calibration of the machine, a quick look-over of his clipboard, picking up the folder for his first appointment of the day, and he's ready to go. He walks through the back halls of the lab, waving a cheerful good-morning at a couple techs he passes by, as well as a young child and their parent being led by another researcher to their own starter appointment, until he reaches the door to the lobby.
"Good morning, Carrie. I feel like it's going to be a beautiful day today, don't you?"
The secretary at the front desk glances up at him and smiles back. "Good morning, Dr. Abremont. I hope so."
"Right!" He beams, and glances at the clipboard, and then back up to the Laboratory lobby on the whole. "So let's get started on a good foot. Mr. Benaiah Israel? If you're present, we're ready for you!"
What kind of Pokemon are you, how do you do the things you do? Ready to meet a pal or six inside!? What kind of Pokemon are you, are you loyal through and through? Do you have a heart that's true?
Let's find a Pokemon for you!

Benaiah’s eyes were bright and fixed on the man as he entered the lobby from his offices. He’d been up sailing since the night before, charging his monohull through the ocean waves and fighting the current of the river to force his way here. He was fascinated by how pampered these people were in civilization. Their comfortable beds and their electricity dulled their ability to feel the breeze to chart the path and navigate with the celestial bodies.
They all looked at him wide eyed when he docked his boat off the shore of a nearby river, this morning, and tied down the grass rope and post to hold it into place. The fish he caught along the way freshly cooked in his handmade lunchbox, which he carried in his left hand. His clothes still smelled of the salt of the sea upon his arrival here. This building was larger than any home in his village and it housed Pokémon. Quite the pampering for the beasts. Whatever Pokémon that he was blessed with would learn the lessons of the sea and of sail and rod as well.
”Ahoy, I am here!”, Benaiah would answer in a booming voice, wide eyed with a laugh and smile. ”Let us see what today’s catch shall be!”

"Ahoy!" Devereux grins back. He glances up and down Benaiah, taking him in for a moment before making an approving hum, scanning open the lab door and gesturing the new trainer to be inside. "I am certain it will be a good one. Fresh off the water this morning? Weather looked beautiful on my walk to work."
The walk down the hall is not a particularly long one, and the bustle in the hallway has mostly filtered out. Devereux scans his ID on a door about three down to the left, and opens it to gesture Benaiah inside. "Right this way — feel free to make yourself comfortable. There's never a rush with this kind of thing. I'll let you know how it works, what to expect, and answer any questions you might have before we dive right in."
The space is surprisingly spacious and furnished, for being an examination room. One wall and part of the room is taken up by a number of perches, shelves, climbing towers, and beds for Pokemon to make themselves comfortable both in and on, like a jungle gym. Across from it is a comfortable looking couch with a long wood coffee table in front of it, both sitting upon a rug with a Pokeball pattern. Next to the couch is a mostly-organized basket of Pokemon toys. As Devereux crosses the room, he steps around a kiddy-pool set-up and filled near the center of the space, towards the centerpiece of the room — the large machine at the back. A large LED screen sits in standby mode, and along the front of the machine is an indentation, containing tray with six spherical slots ready to be filled with the Pokeballs stocked inside. Inexplicably, there is a large pair of googly eyes on the PC, rendering it a little less impressive and a little more silly.
"Alright," Dr. Abremont smiles back at Benaiah as he scans his ID on the machine. It whirs to life, screen lighting up, and after scanning for a few seconds, gently deposits six Pokeballs within the slots. The man then turns to face the prospective trainer and nods. "Please forgive the little pool; it's temporary while we install proper tanks in the rooms for Water Pokemon. So — here's our rules. We have six Pokemon today to choose from, chosen at random by ol' Albert here. From those six, you'll be choosing one as your new starter. There aren't any re-rolls, but that's never been a problem. Once you've chosen a Pokemon partner, you'll get setup at the front desk — a trainer ID, Pokedex registration, the Pokemon's care files, and a trainer care kit. From there, the world's your Cloyster! You can take all the time you want to interact or consider. There's no rush, it's a huge decision. And if you need more time, feel free to let me know. We can mark the Pokeballs and set them aside for you if you need. But with that in mind… any questions before we get started?"
What kind of Pokemon are you, how do you do the things you do? Ready to meet a pal or six inside!? What kind of Pokemon are you, are you loyal through and through? Do you have a heart that's true?
Let's find a Pokemon for you!

Benaiah would listen to the man as he led him down the hallway which was quite ornate in the rugged sailor’s opinion. He had never seen such constructs and was shocked at the wonders of electricity when he’s seen little more than ruins and small hand made huts and canoes his entire life. ”Um, yes, I sailed my monohull in early this morning against the current of your local river.” He answered taking in the scenery even more shocked when they entered into a large room which would house every member of his family as well as his coastal village. The shock on his face was apparent.
As he regained his composure, he’d calm himself, listening to the professor. He wasn’t here to get comfortable or to make himself at home. He was here to start his journey as a Pokémon trainer and discover this new world which he set out to explore and conquer through Pokémon battles. So he quietly listened as the professor explained everything. It was all pretty simple. Nothing was hard to understand. It was simply a marvel to see the magic of this technology on full display, especially where Benaiah came from.
”No sir, no questions at all.”, he’d answer. ”I’m ready to get started!”

"Aye aye, captain. Ah — a monohull up the river, you said?" Devereux inclines his head appreciatively as he disengages the tray of Pokeballs from the machine, approaching Benaiah. "You must be quite the accomplished sailor. That kind of precision is impressive." The shock he had seen upon the other man's face before walking over pulls a soft smile to Devereux's expression. He isn't certain what it is from — but it would not be the first time someone has taken in one of these specific exam rooms , furnished for this exact purpose, and shown a similar look of surprise.
Setting the tray upon the table, Devereux picks up the first Pokeball and nods. "Alright. Without further ado…" The ball is tossed gently into the air, and it opens in a burst of dazzling blue-white light before returning to the tall man's hand. Where the light settles and then fades is the first of the Pokemon — a little grey piglet, springing upon a large coiled tail with a lustrous pink pearl settled between its ears. "Spoink — the Bounce Pokemon," Devereux notates. "A psychic type. The pearl upon it's head amplifies it's psychokinetic power. Old data used to suggest that if a Spoink ceases to bounce, it would die, as it's heartbeat was tied to its bouncing, but more recent research would suggest that isn't entirely true."
The second ball follows in a similar fashion — this time, the Pokemon, similarly bouncing from foot to foot, though this time as a cause of high energy rather than potential necessity, is a white rabbit with orange-tipped ears. It grins and rubs its nose impishly. "Scorbunny, the Rabbit Pokemon. A fire type," Dev gestures down to it. "The pads on Scorbunny's feet generate tremendous heat during battle. It was historically a classic starter Pokemon in the Galar region."
Picking up the third Pokeball, Devereux releases it as well, stepping a bit to the side with the tray to offer more room. The Pokemon is a little brown reptile, holding a club, a skull helm decorating its upper face. Devereux reaches down to scritch it's jaw gently, and then clicks his tongue as he straightens up again. "Cubone — the Lonely Pokemon, a ground type. None have seen the real face under the helm of Cubone, and the skull rattles when it cries out. Historical dex entries on this Pokemon are entirely biased on one particular folktale from the Kanto region, in which a young Cubone wore the skull of it's deceased mother — the insinuation is that they are all like this, but I have seen a newly hatched Cubone with it's healthy mother nearby, so… " He shrugs. There are many conclusions to be drawn from it.
"Anyway," he says, "It's a good Pokemon, and historical innacuracy is not it's fault, is it little Cubone? Right — onto number four!" Devereux tosses this ball a little further, and the bright light forms inside the kiddy-pool in the center of the room. Treading water happily is a pale blue duck with a vibrant belly. It quacks, swimming in a little circle. "Ducklett — the Water Bird Pokemon, a Water and Flying type. Despite being a flighted bird, they are better at swimming than flying, and are incredibly skilled divers."
Once the Ducklett settles, Devereux releases the fifth ball. A dark indigo frog with bright reddish orange cheek pouches appears and wheezes with a little grin. White bands as pale as its teeth round its stomach. "Croagunk," Devereux says. "The Toxic Mouth Pokemon — and of course, a Poison and Fighting type. They were quite popular as mascots in Sinnoh. Croagunk has poisonous sacs in both cheeks, as well as poison in the same-colored finger. It attacks with poisonous jabs."
As Devereux picks up the sixth and final Pokeball, he offers Benaiah a smile. "Doing alright?" he inquires, "Just one left! And this one…" The ball releases a bipedal Pokemon with sharp blades for hands, and an extra blade protruding like a horn from the helmet-like carapace on it's head. "This is Pawniard, the aptly named Sharp Blade Pokemon, a Dark and Steel type. These Pokemon are remarkably obedient when you've earned their loyalty. Their entire body is covered in blades, and it sharpens them often."
With all six Pokemon out in the room, Devereux takes a step back and nods to Benaiah. "As I mentioned, take your time. I'll be right here when you're ready with a choice — or if you've any questions I can offer answer or clarification to. But these are the six!"

After the Professor summoned the six Pokémon and explained their categories and origins better than any text book or index, Benaiah would study all of them. Looking each of them in their faces, peering into their eyes to see what was there. It is with our faces that we face the world, from the moment of birth to the moment of death. Our age and our sex are printed on our faces. Our emotions, the open and instinctive emotions which philosophers wrote about, as well as the hidden or repressed ones which psychologists wrote about, are displayed on our faces, along with our thoughts and intentions.
Though we may admire arms and legs, breasts and buttocks, it is the face, first and last, which is judged “beautiful” in an aesthetic sense, “fine” or “distinguished” in a moral or intellectual sense. And, crucially, it is by our faces that we can be recognized as individuals. Our faces bear the stamp of our experiences and character; at forty, it is said, a man has the face he deserves. The same must be true about Pokémon. Benaiah would be able to peer into their mind’s eye and see just what these creatures were made of.
Looking at the group, the two that stood out were the Cubone and the Scorbunny. The Lonely Pokémon had a stern look of understanding and respect upon its face but it may be too stiff for a life at sea, where a situation could change in seconds. And other was the Rabbit Pokémon, which hopped back and forth quickly from its large hind legs, showing the intensity and focus needed to keep a vessel afloat in a typhoon or a tsunami but was it too cocky for its own good ?
After a good while of silently staring at the Pokémon, no question or word from Benaiah, he’d finally declare himself. With one motion and a single word, he’d point at the Rabbit Pokémon and speak, ”Scorbunny.”

Devereux watches with equal patience and curiosity at the consideration upon Benaiah's face. The expression of intense scrutiny, observation, and thought going between Pokemon to human and back again was fascinating. It was like a switch had been flipped — from friendly sailor, to discerning craftsman. In the meantime as the Professor watches, he crosses one ankle over the other, leaning his weight upon one leg, and pulls his tablet from his lab coat, splitting his attention between inputting Benaiah's data into the system to register a trainer ID, and watching the man himself with the Pokemon.
Eventually, the choice is made, and Dev looks up, submits the information, and pockets the tablet once more with a smile. The Scorbunny does a little cheer, and the tall man nods, picking up the Pokeball for the Rabbit Pokemon and handing it to Benaiah. "Scorbunny it is! A fine choice, if I may say so. My own partner Pokemon is a fire type as well."
He takes a moment to recall the rest of the five Pokemon, replacing them upon the tray and onto the PC, so called 'Albert' — where they are recalled back into the Laboratory system. That done, Devereux returns to the door of the exam room and opens it, gesturing with his head. "I have a feeling that you two will have quite the bond. Pokemon are such remarkable creatures. Resilient, and capable of developing in myriad ways, as unique as you or me. Treat them well, and they'll treat you well. But ah… I digress." He smiles, and clasps his hands together. "Congratulations, Mr. Israel — you are officially a Pokemon Trainer. When you're ready, I'll escort you and Scorbunny to the front desk. The secretary will sign you out, and you'll receive your Trainer kit. After that, you're free to go! My office is always open should there be anything I can help with or questions I can answer. Take care, yes? I hope to see you and Scorbunny out there in the field!"
OOC: Congratulations! You've obtained SCORBUNNY!
